Covid... the second time around

Yes, I tested positive for Covid. My first bout was in March 2021. Even though there was no testing available, I had just visited Seattle (a hot spot at the time) and had all the symptoms. I had aches, chills and fever, but by far the worst symptom was the incredible chest congestion. When I coughed, I sounded like I had TB. I remember being in line in a restaurant when no one was wearing masks and Covid was barely a thing and having the women in front of me give me the "stink eye" when I coughed. And it lasted for months. My partner, who rarely gets sick, also developed terrible congestion and coughing that seemed to last forever, so we're pretty sure he had it as well.

I have been twice vaxxed and boosted once. As a result, I haven't worn a mask in public places for a couple of months. Thursday I woke up with a sore throat and a bit of congestion when I coughed. I was on the phone yesterday with a friend and when I talked my throat was so dry I started hacking. I've had very mild sweats as well. I haven't lost my appetite nor my energy level. I was at the gym on Friday, and today we ate barbecued ribs and I scarfed them up. I still have the congestion, but the coughing isn't nearly as frequent nor does it sound like I'm Typhoid Mary. I attribute this not only to being vaccinated but the fact that I am much more healthy now than when I was working. I no longer wear out my body traveling, I work out frequently, I eat more healthy because I'm home and I take numerous supplements. Anyway, I'm hoping for the best.

We have couple of home Covid tests. I tested positive today, but my partner did not so we are keeping our distance and wearing masks. Ironically, his company granted their employees a week off that must be taken during a certain period and he chose this coming week. I hope to become healthy enough to join him at a few venues, while wearing a mask. I've canceled a Tuesday massage because I told them I didn't want to infect other people. Fingers crossed!

Hope you're well soon!

It's going back around here but doesn't seem as severe.

My 82 year old uncle had for the second time last week; his first case was in 2020 and both were mild. He's not vaccinated, has a chronic cardiovascular disease and several other health issues--looks like the hunchback of Notre Dame now due to arthritis--but he pushes physically ...still cattle farms, has a large vegetable garden, hunts, fishes. By eating what he grows and kills and spending so much time being physically active outdoors, my guess is his immune system is strong.

I hope you get to feeling much better ~ soon. Take care of yourself.

Hoping for the best outcome for you! It seems like a bit of a crap-shoot when it comes to getting this virus. Some affected horribly while others not so much. As long as you stay out of the hospital and off breathing assistance then you've done well.

Seems the more recent variants are by and large less severe; for fully vaccinated people anyway. Hopefully that will be your result 🙏

Chest congestion is scary. Hopefully the less severe case will provide immunity. So glad you are feeling okay.

Last Christmas the wife and I were invited to a party. One of the guests had a "cold", which I now believe was the Omicron variant. We both got it. It was the Cold From Hell! Worst cold of my life. We must have single handidly financed the Kleenex industry, but because of the Vax we both recovered in about a week. Wasn't fun, but we came through it at home, and the experience was educational.

How reliable are Covid tests at this time? My brother tested positive with no symptoms. Later he tested negative. About a month later he tested positive and was sick for a while. He said he felt bad, but he had flu in the past that was worse. He didn't require medical treatment. He is in his 70s. Another person had Covid and felt bad for a while. Later he tested positive with no symptoms. So glad you and your wife came through easily.

So sorry, Dseag2 - Hopefully, this will pass without severe consequences. By the way, my Covid started with a sore throat, too. Just a heads-up, your partner should test again tomorrow or the next day - We had a small family gathering to play with my great-grandkids. My grand-daughter said she was allergic to Ohio (we do have a lot of trees) - then the baby twins ran fevers. She did a test and was positive. The next day, my daughter, the day after, my grandson, then I tested positive three days after exposure. We also recovered in order of age. Unfortunately, I still have problems and am really scared to get it again. I feel for you. Wishing you both the best. ~ Em

Get well soon. Speaking of massage, did you ever have a foot massage? If not, you really need to try one. I couldn't believe the relief I got from just having one, so since that time, I have been getting a foot massage once a month. I have had foot issues since a little boy with one thing and then another. Somehow the bones in my left foot were not aligned properly at birth. That was the diagnosis the Podiatrist gave me years ago and he was the person that suggested getting a foot massage.

I am so sorry to hear that you are going thru it again. We try so hard to not get exposed but it just happens. I don't have the exposure you do but wish I had. I know you will be okay as you seem very proactive about your health, proper physical exercise and diet. The things you do have kept you strong and healthy. I wish I was more like you!

I have not had it yet. I have been vaccinated and boosted. I don't go out much but when I do I still follow protocols, I still wear a mask, do not get to close to others, wash my hands and change my clothes when I get home. I know at some point I will likely catch it. When I do I hope it won't be too bad. I live alone and don't want to rely on family to come take care of me. I hope it will be like a bad cold. I am prepared in every area. Have plenty of food for me,over the counter cough syrup, decongestents and fever/pain relievers. I have a lot of canned soups and homemade freezer meals. Dog food supples for a month or longer. I have testing kits to make sure that is why I am sick.

There have been times I wish I would get it and be done with it. As we now know it is a whole different ball game. You can get it with or without the vaccine, you can have it multiple times. We will all get it, we just need to prepared for when we have it.

Re: Reliability of Covid tests; Last I heard was 46% reliable. Not very reassuring.
No vax for me. No mask unless required. No "Social Distancing."
I tested negative twice while in the ER for a few hours in January - unrelated to Covid.
I may have had Covid last year; I had what I thought was a cold - sore throat, congestion, temp around 99. Lasted 2-3 days. Who knows?

We requested testing about 3 days after symptoms began, but at that time there was a backlog and my wife and I were tested late in the game, several days after symptoms ended. Both were negative. Others at the party where we almost certainly contracted Omicron were positive,

Validity tests have been done at various times after onset of symptoms, and the results vary. It's affected by which type of test is given, and who is doing it, how soon after symptoms appear, plus many other variables. I don't consider the tests highly accurate, but the results appear to be from 78% to 97% range. I only checked this on the first two hits I got from google. There are probably other studies that yielded different results.

How accurate are at-home tests?
https://www.healthline.com/health/how-accurate-are-rapid-covid-tests#at-home-tests

At-home tests aren’t as accurate as gold standard PCR tests, but they still play a role in catching COVID-19 cases that otherwise would have gone undetected. Like other antigen COVID-19 tests, home COVID-19 tests have a higher chance of a false negative than a false positive — meaning it’s more likely that the test will indicate you don’t have COVID-19 when you do have it than report you do have it when you don’t.

In an August 2021 study Trusted Source, researchers compared the validity of home antigen tests compared to PCR lab tests for detecting COVID-19 infection. Within days 0 to 12 of symptom onset, the home tests correctly identified 78.9 percent of people who did have the virus and correctly identified 97.1 percent of people who didn’t have the virus.

When taken within 3 days of symptom onset, home tests correctly identified 96.2 of COVID-19 cases. The researchers found tests taken 3 days after symptoms appeared were almost as accurate as tests taken the day symptoms started.

Thank you, everyone, for your good wishes. I felt better today. The congestion is now slight. Nothing like the first time around. I think I could be rid of it completely by Tuesday. What is almost as miserable as the congestion is the 3 days of sweating from having a slight fever.

Anyway, thank you again for being such a caring group!

Delighted you are on the mend. You are an important part of this group, and much loved by many.🤗
