Brittney Griner gets 9 years. What do you think?

I think nine years is too much, but yes, she was stupid.

I must say I agree , but we do not get to set the "punishment" in their country.

If Putin called and asked my opinion <grin> I honestly would suggest a heavy $$ fine, and six months in the local jail. Then put her on a plane, and advise her to never return.

She was stupid and made a colossal mistake. Unless it was something like espionage, murder, theft, serious hurtful crime, just deport her!

Kick her out of the country instead of feeding her for 9 years. But that's Russia for you. Spiteful.

She is far beyond stupid. Her downfall was and always will be is thinking she was and always will be more then she really is in the grand scheme of things. Her dunking in Russia for six seasons is a mere drop in the bucket of international relations. Russia could care less about sports recognition. What the politburo cares about is their standing in the Geopolitical arena. I posted a thread about the Russian penal system and I'll try to repost it.

BTW: I guess she didn't learn one thing about her self absorbed fake A list rating when the Phoenix City Police not only arrested her lover but they arrested her too. The rather interesting twist to this incident is Johnsons sister called the Phoenix City Police expecting just Brittney being arrested.

And while I am on one of my tares I don't like labels like LGBT, homo, queer, Black, straight, White, religious, agnostic, ugly, beautiful, vertically challenged, retarded, bipolar which is the new buzz word for manic depression, fat, skinny, obese, anorexic, yada, yada, yada. We are all the same because we all possess the one common identity. We are all humans. I say that because I love Christ. Thanks for listening.

OK, I agree ..... and all those folks you mentioned should not receive any special considerations or accomodations ... because as you note we are all just people . Do away with afirmative action, civil-rights, womens rights, any & all sex division in business & sports ...... yeah I like that, because as you say, we are all the same ...... glad you thought of it.

The maximum sentence is 10 years and she got 9 1/2. Does not matter what Country a person is in, excessive is just that. Suppose the maximum was 50 years and she received 49 1/2? She was dumb, true, and as said, a traveller should be aware of Sovereign laws!

Thx rgp. I may not have always agreed with you on some hot button issues but the one thing I always respected about you is your "Take no prisoners mindset". Straight up and to the point. Stay frosty mi amigo.

Hey Murrmurr you still feeling good? Is boss lady keeping you on the straight and narrow? lol. I haven't seen you in a long while.

Actually, I've not been feeling top-notch lately. Kinda sulky; lots of back pain. But I'll be seeing my back surgeon next week. Maybe he can do something for it.

I got a pill bottle full of Oxy from that ER visit when I wrapped that Hi-rail truck around a tree last year. Got a whopping ER bill and no money from Geico since the truck was modified.

Oh man, don't get me started on car insurances. I scraped the rear end of the upstairs lady's car ...her car... and my insurance said I'm not covered. I've had this insurance for over 30 years and never ever filed a claim. I've just been sending them a check every month like it's child support.

This just happened today.

Now I need to go get in the recliner, @FastTrax . Talk to you later. And I wouldn't worry about Grinder....she won't have to listen to the National Anthem for a whole 9.5 years.

I thought she was foolish when I first heard this story. Like...WTH was she thinking?! One should never carry such substances into a foreign country. But IF she really didn't realize they were still in her suitcase, then I feel for her. So many times I have found things in the nooks and crannies of my suitcases that I forgot were there. I don't know how small those things are, so I can speak to the probability of her lying or not. I think 9 years is probably steep but compared to what? I admit I haven't kept up with the particulars of this case.
She traveled a lot I assume and you bring up a good point. I doubt she cleaned out every little pocket in her travel bags. If it was an overlook case, I feel really bad for her. I hope the exchange goes through.

It is unfortunate that a fellow citizen is in a foreign prison for the next 9.5 years for a crime that would otherwise go unnoticed in this country. However, if it were me, I would be scrupulous about checking all of my personal possessions to be sure there weren't any items that would be considered illegal when traveling and working in another country.

A number of countries have strict anti-drug laws that carry severe penalties. If she was playing on a traveling team that was in Japan, Malaysia or Dubai she could have been handed a more harsh penalty if found with the same hash oil.

When I was working in Saudi, about 20 years ago some Pakistanis were found to be carrying hash. That was on a Tuesday, Friday they were beheaded. Don't know how much. You are right it does get worse, much worse.

I think the real question is how does her sentence compare to sentences given Russian citizens guilty of the same crime. If it is similar I think we need to let her do the time. If not then US government intervention at some level makes sense.

Trading a real criminal like arms dealer Viktor Bout for her doesn't seem to me to make sense. It just invites the Russians to grab any foreign tourist when they want something in exchange...
