It's Nice Being on a Non Political Forum

Still love 50's & 60's music!
Although, I am a very political person. I get tired of discussing politics. Especially since 2016. Some people in my country have gotten very mean and dangerous. This is the main reason that I left another forum that I had been on for about 4 years or so. With this forum, it seems like everybody keeps their politics to themselves, and just talk about other things. Of course there is still sports and religion!😇

I find it very difficult because so many subjects are borderline political that you cannot have a serious discussion about many things here. I too know a very nasty political forum where people are ready to kill each other all the time. Neither extreme is good.

Similar story here. Recently left a forum where there are some nice people but there’s a lot of blatant racism and homophobia and I’ve got to the point where I can’t stand it anymore. Calling people out on it gets no support and reporting it to the admin gets no reply. So you’re getting me here more often :)

At the AARP website was a member for 5yrs, their poltical forum was down right nasty. One time I made the mistake of posting to a ongoing thread, a few people's replies were so awful I was po'd.The adminstrators never did anything in a timely manner to address the problem I quit soon after that and came here

It is hard, the problem is defining what is and isn't "political". A lot of the posts are political, and some of those get shutdown, not all.

That is what we don't have.

I don't always agree with his decisions, but in the end our administrator, @Matrix does a pretty good job of keeping things civil.

So ... you cannot just skip over a political thead if there was one posted ?

Politics are the largest , and most influential part of government , and government is the "umbrella" of rule under which we all live. As such ... of all the possible discussions there could be / we could have ........ politics is IMO the single most important.

Placing one's head in the sand serves no purpose.

I noticed the same thing when I was on the AARP site.

You make a valid point, and as I said there are a lot of political things discussed here, but contention is kept to a minimum.

If it were up to me I would have a designated topic that allowed open political discussion, but it ain't up to me, not my forum. And as I said even if I don't agree with all the decisions this works pretty well, and is still an interesting place.

If one wants politics, I guess you can be a member of 2 forums. Nick name them War and Peace. I had a list of 3 senior forums I was considering. One had a lot of articles, one was obviously predominantly right wing. They were saying disgusting things about the President and his family, while not saying anything about the previous President and his family. To me that was a poison filled site. This was the 3rd site. So I chose this one. Looks like I made the right choice.

Ha, this forum doesn't need politics, they can and do argue about everything else. It's a great forum and I like the way it is moderated. If you don't like a thread, don't read it. There are so many diverse and nice people you can never be bored!
That's where the ignore button comes in handy... if someone is annoying, then put them on ignore.. it's like they don't exist.. suits me very well...(y)

I know the site you mean, I think. I always left there feeling sad and angry. Who wants to feel that? Btw, I don't think you are the Paladin I knew years ago.

Exactly. That's what I do at the "nasty" forum. No one forces you to respond so just let it go. And, when I do respond it's obvious I'm not the nasty type and to my surprise so are many others there. I've made a lot of friends there this way, just by being normal. Remember "normal"? :giggle:

It's easy to ignore a thread whose subject is of not interest to you, or started by someone whom you have no respect for.. however it's very much more difficult to ignore a post on a thread where you may have some interest.. so the ignore button is the easy option .. then those posts are invisible

That's where the ignore button comes in handy...
I know that makes sense for some, but I have never felt the need to use it.

I like most people here and appreciate their insights and comments.

From time to time I do find a few annoying but I am yet to see anyone who had nothing interesting to say. Though it takes a bit more work to find it with some...

You've not been here long enough to have been on the receiving end of abuse.. your time will doubtless come
