It's Nice Being on a Non Political Forum

I guess you are right.

I believe the reason is ratings, unfortunately too many of us like to watch, read, and listen to the crap...

Cannot stomach listening to the crap that passes for 'journalism' today. I read both US 'sides', UK and Aussie sources and try to figure out the truth. Most US media is a starting point for me. I look for a lead in articles to research further.

And 'trusted media' lists are a biased joke. Don't trust or discount any media source regardless of whether they mostly fit your ideology. Use them all and look for nuggets of truth in the mostly subjective garbage to research further.

Well I definitely agree that there is much that desperately needs to be discussed, but there is no government censorship in play. And yes, the political propaganda is pervasive, and privately held media properties are under no obligation to allow dissemination of such on their venues.

Not mutually exclusive per se, but freedom of speech as defined by the First Amendment only gives individuals a right to say what they wish, but does not convey any aura of credibility. Freedom of speech just "is", common sense is what society agrees to be true.
I agree this is the way it is interpreted as a constitutional right, but this is a private forum, with agreements not to push the envelope. Common Sense does apply here. or should.

I literally got attacked on Ravelry (knit and crochet site) in the forums because someone thought handmade washcloths were an insult to gift. So I responded, told them off, and told them not to bother to reply as I was putting them on ignore and I did.
I used to belong to a site that was only recipes and household (mainly cleaning) hints which you might not think would ever cause a fight, but a huge one got going anyway. The worst site I've ever experienced so far as to mean, vicious attacks has been the comments section on some YouTube channels...good grief.

OMG, YouTube yes. Can be a total nightmare. I've had people just focus in on a comment I made so I'd just delete the comment. Even when others said similar. I've looked at comments that totally go down a rabbit hole and two people snipe and argue back and forth. I don't post much on YouTube anymore though I watch videos.

I agree, and try not to pay any attention to it, but that is hard. If more people thought, and acted, like you the media would get better. Wishful thinking I suppose.

I usually start with the BBC, not perfect by any means but it does lack some of the bias with respect to US politics... Its also well done and covers a lot of what I am interested in.

Not all discussion on a political forum need be abusive, but it can be highly predictable. l came here from a UseNet retirement forum that had become entirely political. An occasional dealer in abuse would show up, and I would “plonk” him - as in never see another post from the abusive jerk. On the other hand, a few genuinely nice individuals could be a pleasure to carry on a conversation with, but still frustrating since I knew in advance what their attitude and answer would be on an infamous issue of the day. I do miss the politics around here, but I still can enjoy the conversation and am all too familiar with how politics would destroy this forum.

I don’t want to discuss or argue politics as a leisure activity,!
I do follow the “NextDoor” page for my part of town, because there have been times I’ve gotten factual information on issues to do with my apparent complex& area that mgt was not circulating .There is a lot of unrest re crime in my city right now and people have been very “political” about how it should be handled. But there are one or two members there that deliberately “bait” people to try to get them ranting and fighting. I just told them outright I wasn’t going to play their word games.

I find it very difficult because so many subjects are borderline political that you cannot have a serious discussion about many things here. I too know a very nasty political forum where people are ready to kill each other all the time. Neither extreme is good.
I have to agree. On this forum, you are constantly monitoring yourself in case you say something which could provoke a political argument.

I think of this forum as primarily a small talk forum where you don't have to write paragraphs on a subject, but just make passing comments on a topic if you like. When you bypass the heavy stuff like politics, humor has a chance to bud.
It can be frustrating though, when some subjects do need a more in-depth discussion, but it always seems to lead to unpleasantness.

Yes, I do the same. Maybe that was the idea?
