Thanks for asking. I was running a few tech forums, they were helpful to many people but no fun to me. I like personal stories, experiences... If many seniors from around the world come together to share their lives, stories and wisdom, that would be pretty cool.

It's hard to get it going, I often wondered if it's a bad idea in the first place. If seniors talk a lot about health, pain, or even death, will it make SF a depressing place that no one wants to come?

SF is very active but not so popular, because we have very limited visitors. 232 members logged in yesterday. What would it be like to have 2000 logged in members a day? I don't think it will ever happen, we have stuck in 200+ for many years.

SF was started on Mar 17, 2012.

By SF definition I will be a senior in a couple of years.

Chaos is what it would be like having 2000 members , I know from experience. It needs advertising to keep it afloat.. and it needs a handful of moderators . It becomes less personal and more of a passing place .. where people form cliques.. and others don't make conversation at all but join just to play word games..

there's a few huge forums out there.. I;ve been a member of them, and they're not anywhere nearly as friendly as this one.. ... (y)

One thing I like most about SF is I don't think I've ever come to the forum that there weren't members online.
I guess it's because there are members from around the world, in all different time-zones.

For sure ... just becomes a place to pass thru and not really connect with anyone.

Yeah. Remember MySpace? The more popular it got, the uglier it got.

I have mentioned and linked to SF on FB, and in real life conversations (I live in a senior only apt building, but many do not have internet or computers)
I fund the site not long after I retired as I wanted a Senior friendly place to go to;
But, that being said, as @Murrmurr said, sometimes smaller is good. We get to know the regulars quite well

We do talk about those things, they are closer to us than to younger people. However I don't find this place at all depressing, people kind of accept our conditions and laugh a lot.

Thank you again for creating this forum and I'm glad you stayed the course. I mentioned how I feel about SF in the thread that Ruthanne directed at me. This is my new "cyber-home" and I'm enjoying it very much. I think 2,000 members visiting everyday would probably be too much and might dilute the comradery.

The first forum that I joined was for young mothers and pregnant women. I was a long way past that but was attracted by a side advert on my computer that was about the issue of scripture teaching in public schools. I did not disclose my age as I waded into the debate and then I began to read other areas of the forum. It was rather raunchy and I learnt a lot about the issues, language and values of young Australian women. After being a member for some time I decided that I should reveal myself as a grandmother and I left the forum in favour of an Australian forum for seniors.

Unfortunately that forum was small and it eventually collapsed. A number of the members migrated to SF and we were welcomed most warmly. The only time we encountered any hostile reaction as Australians was when the topic was political or about firearms. Not many of these Aussies are still participants but I have endured and am very grateful for this forum. I appreciate engaging with people from US, Canada, UK, NZ and my worldview has been informed by hearing the opinions people whose life experiences have been different to my own.

I am grateful to Matrix for providing this forum and have respect for the way the forum is moderated in the interest of harmony. It means we all have to think and exercise restraint before we post. New members sometimes think this is a negative but I see it as the wisest course.

i have found the smaller groups to be more close knit and just nicer. the more people the more you run into personality conflicts. i think this page has enough of those. :ROFLMAO:

Thank you, Matrix for providing a well-run, thoughtful forum.
Agree. At times in my life I was on legal Q&A message boards where any one could respond, I won't say which in public. There were disclaimers on all them that the answers to were as is, regardless of the proficiency of the answer.

Needless to say, there were smart A's galore. The moderator was a you know what. I was constantly attacked for my "ignorance" of the law by moronic regulars who did not know a gavel from a shovel. It never ceased. The site relied on "regulars" to post so the forum would stay active. I was PM'd once by a jerk. On the open board I called him a jerk. I was suspended for 6 months! Did the moderator even ask me about it?? The already established regulars ran amok, the mod did nothing. That is not the only forum that was like that. I surf around for Q&A forums and it seems the same jerks on every forum, in existence, so I do not participate in them, deja vu! Disagreements I can handle, but those idiots acted like I was so stupid on my knowledge of law it was sickening, yet the moderator did nothing.
