Men Where Do You Get Your Hair Cut, Barber Shop, Salon or Wife/Friend?

Where do the men here get their hair cut? Do you go to a salon, a barber shop, or do you have your wife or a friend do it? I just finished giving hubby a hair cut, he doesn't want to go out to do it, he's happy with the way I cut it at home. I've been cutting his hair since we were young, when he wore it a bit long for awhile.

I notice by me they have special sport salons for men, and all the people who cut the hair are young attractive women. They're supposed to have big screen TVs showing sports all the time. I was never in one, and my husband has no desire to go to one at all.
 

I just go to a traditional barber shop, the gal that owns and runs it is just a normal hard working class person, and I support that.
 
I just go to an old barber up in town, 4 miles away. He does a good job, and just charges $8...but most of us give him a 10. It's kind of a "gathering spot" for a lot of the old retirees around here, and most of the time there are 2 or 3 old guys sitting around and discussing all the various ills of the world, and how to cure them.
 

I have been cutting my hair for the past 35 years if not more....

Very simple...............

I bought (a very good one) hair clipper and I use the 1/4 inch attachment through the hair.. It comes out even, good looking, and not so grey looking, as well as short...............
 
Been cutting my own hair for years. If I make a mistake it won't be noticeable for too long...:cool:

Same here Don, only my barber charges $10.00 and most of us take the extra $2.00 along for the tip. If I am ever in a mood to just hang out and B.S. with the guys, I head down to Ellis's Barber Shop. He has two chairs, but I only get in his chair. Most of the other guys take the first chair available. Of course, they all call me "Fly Boy," which I don't mind. Most of the guys have nicknames for each other. The one old guy's nickname is "Pissy." I don't know how he got that name and I am not asking.
 
I try to go to a barber. In a couple of the communities where I've been assigned, I've found good barbers who charge unbelievably low rates. You get to hear the entire history of their communities. It becomes more of a half-hour of entertainment. If around home, I have a barber, who is about ready to retire, that I enjoy. We go to the same church and can talk "church politics" while he cuts my hair.

Now and then, I will be threatened by my wife that if I don't get a haircut she'll find some scissors and effect what damage she can. So, I'll hit a cheap cut place... Snip-N-Clip, Fantastic Sam's, etc... on the road. I've never got a good hair cut from one of those places and end up going back to a "real" barber in pretty short order.
 
I cut my boyfriend's hair....what's left of it. I keep threatening to "slip" and remove the comb-over. What is it about comb-overs? Does anybody really think they're fooling anyone with 18 hairs plastered across the top of their heads? Well, he loves his comb-over and I love him, so the comb-over is safe....for now.
 
I think men look much more natural and younger without any comb-overs, but whatever pleases them. :) I've been grooming my own dogs for many years, so I use their electric clippers, the large one with the 1/16 attachment, and the tiny one for neck and trim, scissors here and there.
 
I do my own dogs , sigh................... dog now ...it has been 2 months and 4 days since my Levi left me, and still so sad. I was a groomer
Anyway I do my husbands hair cuts too. But I obviously have to go get mine cut. And sometimes I wish I could just shave it all off. Lol.
 
Barbers are hard to find in this part of the country. My first barber moved to Acapulco where he could make better money. The next was a one chair shop; a good barber who died at an early age. Twice only I went to a barber who wasn't able to cut my hair the way I wanted. Another barber had a shop in a high rent district and retired when his rent went too high for him to afford. Finally, the barber who retired referred me to a shop that had existed for years out by the race track. The owner was 90 years of age and still alert and doing excellent barbering. The shop itself is several chairs and has everything but a shoeshine stand. It reminds me of the traditional old shops that spend a lot of time cutting your hair and talking. Most of the customers are older retirees like me and one of the barbers had written a book about interesting people he had met. I never take barbers for granted; it's really good to have a barber who is both friendly and an expert with the scissors.
 
I go to a shop that charges $12.00 for Seniors on Wednesdays. Haircuts are $15.00 other times. We had shop that charged less but it closed up. Most of the other shop I've been are the Pro Cuts or some other chain shop. They all charge $15.00 and up.
 
When we lived in Uganda my husband tried the barber once. Not being used to that type of hair, they shaved his head. He never got it cut by a barber there again. He has lots of very thick hair. He bought clippers and me do it. He had pretty crappy haircuts the entire time. :playful:
 
I almost went to the vet to have mine done yesterday. So I went to Casual Cuts ( 4 women ) close to home.

I told her #3 clippers ALL over. She did an excellent job; even ended by putting a hot towel on my neck and shoulders for a few minutes.

I like it ! Now I don't even have to carry a comb with me. It was $16. I gave her a 20 and told her to keep the change. This should hold me for a couple of months.

We'll see.
 
My biggest surprise, after reading all the posts, is the low fees barbers are charging their customers. If the average time it takes for one haircut is 15 or 20 minutes, I can't figure out how they take care of their cost of living. And a barbershop is bound to have some overhead, even if it is small.
 
I have gone to female barbers since my teens and prefer a female to a male barber. The past few years I have been going to one of the franchised Quick Cut shops.
 
I've used a Flowbee for years. I still have a fairly thick head of hair and this does a nice job. I also like that I can do it whenever I want. My wife occasionally trims the edges in back for me.
 
My husband has cut his own hair for quite a few years, not sure what size comb he uses but it's reasonably short, he has a full head of hair
it's quite silver, he laughed the other day when he went to get hearing a aid test the man asked him what colour he wanted but the doctor choose for him a silver one, and hubby said to me why would he choose silver...? All I said was look in the mirror ..
 
Haven't had my hair cut by anyone since 1975 - that's when I started my ponytail and the hair on top of my head started floating away in the breeze. I tried the comb-over thing for a year, but finally hated myself enough to just hack it off.

So now I'm rocking the Taoist look - bald on top, tail in back.

Of course, NOW the hair on top wants to grow back, so I shave it every second day. :rolleyes:
