I am almost to the point of quitting FB and anything else like that because of Twitter.

I don't use my real name on Facebook for other customers. I know Mark knows exactly who I am.

Yes, I'd like to know too!
Before I join Twitter, what IS scary about it?
Well, Twitter scares some people now because it looks like there will be more than one point of view allowed.

Facebook is scary because they can track your activity. I’ve notice how, if I google something like “best coffe maker” then ads for coffee makers start showing up on FB. It’s why I switched to Duck Duck Go for my search engine.

I am trying to sell a Charles Dickens anthology of Christmas novellas and short stories on Marketplace. I state in the ad not to ask for my phone number and they would have to come to my house. I received 3 inquiries asking for my phone number. When I asked if they had read the ad since I said not to ask for my number, I was accused of being a scammer.
Almost no one reads posts. Or maybe they don't understand. I encounter this often. I'll specify that I only do this or don't do that, and they'll ignore it and ask me anyway.

Some don't even look at the photos. For example, on Amazon, someone will post a negative review saying, "It arrived and it was red. I hate red." Yes, the photo shows a red object, and the description states that it's red. I've had personal experience with this in other contexts.

I got tired of the Duck page and all its self promotional advertising. I now use Startpage. They also some ad stuff, but nowhere near as invasive and p.i.a. as the Duck's became.

All the big tech companies(including Twitter) track the user and collect data. But DDG is a good choice over Bing and Google.

I would rather throw items in the trash, than have people come to my house. There's people that answer "for sale" posts on Craig'sList, Facebook and the local newspaper that want to take a look around your house, to see if it's worth burglarizing.

I have a FB account only to keep up with whats happening in my small town and the school system that my grandchildren go to, I hardly ever post on it and I weed out all misinformation post....no way in hell would I join Twitter.

Most sites are what you make of them. Be judicious in what you say or believe.
This seems so self evident but many people who use FB lack a bigger picture of what it is.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that they're talking to the internet at large and not just to their friends that they let in. And so they share memes that state "eternal truths" (in their estimation) that sound like they're preaching to those of us tuned in.

I don't let them in my house, and the outside deliberately looks like its not worth the bother way out here. The Chow doesn't hurt the effect either.

No problem for me. I don't do social media except this Senior Forum. So, far no adds and that is nice. What they do with FB and Twitter and the rest of them is about the last thing in this world that I am concerned with.

You see, I have a life with a lot of interests and hobbies. If suddenly all the computers, cell phones and cable TVs disappeared from this world, I would still survive and I think I would like the world more because I think there would be a lot less anger and a lot more happy people. There would be "no sweat off my brow."

I closed my FB account a decade ago. I sometimes regret it because where I live now a lot of businesses use it, including my doctor. However, I have not missed it enough to go back.

High five and a hearty ME TOO!

What a like minded post. Having survived most of my life without computers, cell phones and the internet I feel well placed to survive the remaining time that I have on this earth if all that technology was suddenly denied us.

There’s a lot of negativity, disinformation, infighting and nonsense on here (SF) too.
That’s what makes it interesting, to me and possibly others. But it’s not always bad
and it’s not bad in all ways either, again, just my opinion. I’m like a lot of people, I
think. If it’s something I like, then it’s good. If I don’t like it, then it’s bad. Your view
may be different than mine but the online world isn’t always one of civility.

The world needs more funny pictures and word games and what better way to put
them before the masses than social media sites!
Fair enough.

Funny FB story to share. Just before I read this thread,my middle dd called me from California (I live in Idaho now) and wanted to know what was going on in Lower Lake-"is there anything on FB about it? Lots of cops heading that way and I`m gonna take another way if there`s a wreck or something." I belong to a FB scanner group-they report police scanner calls and we also have fun on there.Other part of the group name is Adults Gone Wild. Anyway,I had to laugh that she had to call me in Idaho to find out what was going on in her own stomping grounds lol.

I've had a Facebook account since 2007, when a bunch of us moderating a tech/design forum joined. I've added them, a couple of old clients, some bands I follow, a few authors, the Grimm (from the TV series) group, and the requisite cat stuff. That's pretty much all.

I ignore all the FB-proferred "people you might like to follow" stuff.

So I don't see a constant barrage of yack that I don't want to see.

I also use the Firefox Facebook Container extension:
"Facebook Container isolates your Facebook activity from the rest of your web activity in order to prevent Facebook from tracking you outside of the Facebook website via third party cookies."
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/facebook-container/
