This will be a short-lived cold snap, at least in upstate NY. By early next week, temps forecast to rebound into the 40sF. Right now it's brilliant sunshine and -11F (-24C) with a wind chill of -26F (-32C).

Good news - today we hit 100% of normal seasonal snowpack in the mountains!! And we still have a couple of months of snowfall to go. One good year like this will not end the drought, but it sure will help. The black line in the figure is this year, the green one the median, and the upper highest on record.

My apt. bldg issued notice to keep our thermostats at minimum 20 C, 68F, as our heating pipes are in danger of freezing and bursting which means apartments would be flooded. That would be a catastrophe in a building with 100 units.
The usual thing is to worry about fire, now it is flooding.

I heard that on the Weather Channel ... Unbelievable! .... just cannot imagine dealing with that type of COLD!
