It's just gone 2pm.. my friend has just left.. and the sun is still shining with a glorious Blue sky.. I'm waiting for a delivery, if it gets here in the next 1/2 hour I'll go out, but any later than that , I'll leave it till later in the week...

Ah, Monday is a fresh start to the week. Finishing my second cup of 'jo, then off to the library to return and find new books to read, through the car wash to get splatterings of mud off, grocery store for fresh veggies, then later this afternoon over to neighbors. She makes cheese stuffed meatloaf (so yummy) and baked potatoes for us who help her through the week. She's a wonderful cook, and it's a treat to get a home made meal I didn't prepare myself!

I may make some pineapple drop cookies this afternoon to share. I haven't made them in a year, it's my grandmother's recipe.

I slept later than usual this morning. Having coffee right now. Planning on doing some laundry later on. I did not go out to the dumpster over the week-end due to it being so cold and icy. Have two big bags to take out today and will have to take out regardless of what the weather is. This morning a new woman is coming for me to interview for the job of being my aide. Will see how that goes. I have lost count of how many different ones I have had already. I will be doing my morning walk around the hall with my friend too.
So sorry the other one didn't work out, @katlupe-- I was under the impression the last one was 'a keeper.' Guess I missed something. Hope this one does the trick. ((hugs))

I forced myself to take a 35 minute walk yesterday. Really forced myself, wanted to turn back as soon as I left the front door. First part was frightening, so wanted to go home. Then I realized what I was doing to myself; allowing fear to totally control me. What was I supposed to do? stay home for the rest of my life? Me, who used to go out gladly, finding adventure wherever I went is now reduced to being afraid to leave four walls? So I forced myself. It was sunny and not windy. Cold but calm. I was glad I forced myself and look forward to doing it again. I think. Lift off is 1:30 pm today.
@Pepper, how long has this fear been going on with you?
This doesn't sound like you; you seem so confident. I'm glad you pushed yourself out! I hope you have an enjoyable walk today. 🌹

It is. Also surprising to learn that both drugs are anti-allergy antihistamines.
Out of curiosity, I looked up a comparison, copied from Walmart website-

Sominex Active Ingredient (in each tablet) - Purpose: Diphenhydramine HCI 25mg .
Each tablet contains: calcium 10 mg
72 count;
$11.21

Equate Allergy Relief Tablets, with Diphenhydramine HCl 25mg Antihistamine, 100 Count;
$4.00.

I see that 10 mg of calcium is included in Sominex but not in Equate.

My work here is done.

My effort to manage my low-energy February is working, so far. More rest, less exercise, less housework, but still trying to cover the basics.

Maybe it's a blessing in disguise. I was getting tired of keeping up with everything. I'm an adventurer at heart. But sometimes my overly responsible side takes over, and then life is no fun.

Today, swiffer the bare floors, do laundry, half an hour of exercise.

I bought 30 pounds of ground beef (on sale) on Saturday. Today I'll make a batch of meatballs -- if I feel like it.

I'll read some Schopenhauer. This is the local book club selection. I read the three prefaces, and the book promises to be very rough going. The first 40 pages of the actual text were impenetrable. But then author started saying things I could understand. So there is hope.

Anyway, I'm game! Around here there isn't much to do if you're not into snowmobiling, hunting, etc. So I'm happy to support any sociable intellectual pursuit.

Wow - thanks for this! Good sleuthing! The capsules won't work for me because I don't take a full dose, but the caplets will.

The active ingredient in Sominex is different in the UK to the US...

Sominex Tablet Ingredients

Active ingredient

Promethazine Hydrochloride.

Sominex is the trademarked name for several over the counter sleep aids.

Two different formulations of Sominex are available, depending upon the market. Both formulations contain a significant dose of a first generation antihistamine with hypnotic properties.

In the United States, Sominex is marketed by Prestige Brands and has as its active ingredient diphenhydramine hydrochloride.[1] Diphenhydramine hydrochloride is also marketed as a sleep aid in Canada under the same name.

In the UK, Actavis UK markets promethazine hydrochloride under the Sominex name.[2] Actavis also markets a product by the name of Sominex Herbal, which is an herbal sleep aid with three natural active ingredients: hops, valerian, and passion flower extracts.

In India, the Sominex[3] name is used by Lunar BioPharma Pvt. Ltd. to market a nutritional supplement intended to provide "long lasting relief from heart burn, acid peptic disorders and indigestion".[4][5] This formulation of Sominex is not related to the two formulations (containing either diphenhydramine or promethazine) that are marketed as sleep aids by Prestige Brands and Actavis in the United States and the United Kingdom, respectively.

Diphenhydramine and promethazine are both marketed by names other than Sominex for several indications including and besides their use as sleep aids. For example, diphenhydramine is sold under the brand name Benadryl as an anti-histamine for use against allergies. Tylenol PM contains diphenhydramine in addition to acetaminophen for the purpose of inducing sleep and reducing pain and/or fever. Promethazine is marketed by the brand name Phenergan for use against allergy symptoms and motion sickness in the US, where a prescription for promethazine is required. It is also available in the form of a syrup either alone or in combination with one or more of several other active ingredients including codeine and dextromethorphan, for the treatment of allergy symptoms, cough, or cold, among other uses. In Canada, promethazine is available as an over the counter anti-histamine by the name of Histantil.

She didn't show up or call. I can do my own housekeeping without any help. Just takes me longer but keeps me busy and makes me do things. It was just that the health insurance (Fidelis Care) said they will not cover my dental or vision without the aide service. So I accepted it. As long as they cover it even when no aide is working I guess it is okay with me.

The last one I thought was a keeper. The trouble is when it comes to actually coming to work I guess they don't want to get up and get here. I realize it is not the most exciting job in the world. But they applied for it.

I know I've harped on this subject before, but please take note of the side effects of diphenhydramine on folks over the age of 65.

Diphenhydramine Side Effects

Evidence suggests diphenhydramine may result in serious side effects in adults ages 65 and older.5 These are in addition to the side effects everyone else can experience. The older you are, the greater the risk of adverse effects.

Fall Risk

Diphenhydramine can cause decreased reaction times and dizziness.

In older people with other medical problems or physical impairments, this may lead to falls or accidents, especially while getting up to urinate at night. The potential for bone fractures is a notable concern.

Cognitive Impairment and Dementia

Antihistamines like diphenhydramine can have anticholinergic effects as well. This means that the medication acts on the signaling chemical called acetylcholine, which can have important consequences.

One of the more significant ones is cognitive impairment, such as confusion, that's similar to what occurs with dementia or delirium.6

Growing evidence suggests chronic use of these medications may also be associated with the long-term development of dementia.7

Drying Effects

There may also be “drying effects.” These may manifest as:8

Dry mouth
Constipation
Blurred vision
Urinary retention

Urinary retention may increase the risk of developing urinary tract infections (UTIs) or affect kidney function.

Contraindications

Diphenhydramine can be especially dangerous and should not be used for any reason by older adults with history of:

Closed-angle glaucoma
Constipation
Urinary retention
Asthma
Severe liver disease

Summary

The older you are, the greater the risk of adverse effects from diphenhydramine. It generally should not be used as a sleep aid in those ages 65 and older.

Thank you @Georgiagranny ! I didn't know those adverse effects are increased with age.
I don't have any of the conditions you listed but I will be more careful! 💕

Ditto. I'll also look into alternative meds.

Edited to add: Researchers say that we're also at greater risk for virtually all conditions GG listed above if we don't get 7 hours-ish of sleep every night.
No way I can do that without a little help four nights out of seven.

Try melatonin. Start with a small dose. Increase dosage 1 mg at a time until you hit pay dirt! What not to do? Don't take it once and if doesn't work give up because "it doesn't work."

What are the side effects of melatonin in the elderly?
The most common side effects are headaches, nausea and dizziness. In the elderly, exogenous melatonin may decrease blood pressure and cause hypothermia.

How much melatonin should seniors take?
If a trial of melatonin is considered, experts recommend low doses (as low as 0.3 mg up to 2 mg) given 1 h before bedtime. In fact, many of the large studies involving older patients with insomnia used a 2-mg dose.

Is 5mg of melatonin too much for elderly?
Generally, a safe starting dose for adults is between 1 milligram and 5 milligrams of melatonin. Older adults may find doses lower than 1 milligram to be effective.
