Gave myself a bit of a fright today

I understand. I try not to keep everything in one wallet.. so if I lose it there's not as big a problems as there could have been..losing 2 cards instead of 8 for example.. Last week I had a similar internal panic when I was in the supermarket and realised I didn't have my keys.. .Car Key front and back door keys etc ..so I retraced my steps back to the nail salon to see if I;d left them there.. and so on and then realised they were actually in my pocket. I hadn't realised on the jacket that I've worn only a couple of times, that there's a ''secret'' pocket just above the main pocket, and I'd inadvertently put them in there.. *phew*

I have a jacket with exactly same pocket and the car/house key thing happened to me too just last week.
Panic for about half an hour while I retraced my steps then suddenly I felt them.
I have zipped that pocket up forever. !!😖

I have a spare Car key at home.. and I have a spare front and back door key in a safe lock on the outside wall of my house.. so if I lose my keys at least I'll be able to get into the house and get the spare car key. I did this after locking myself out one day and having to call an Emergency locksmith.. however, losing car keys when you're far from home , and having to find an alternate route back even if we do have spare keys at home.. is not something most of us want to have to do..
Retinal scanners would be so much better.

My wallet is always in two places. On my dresser or if I go out, in my rear pocket. If it is not in one of these places, I go into panic mode
Yup
Me too
When I get home
The recpts go on my desk
The wallet, keys, money clip goes from my front pockets into the dresser drawer right by my pillow

I left my purse at WalMart a few years ago. I don't know whether I left it at the checkout, in the shopping cart or I put it on the roof of the car when I unloaded the cart and it fell off when I drove away, but I was lucky to get it back and nothing was taken from it. Now I leave my license and other documents in the glove compartment. The money wasn't as important, but I would have been a hassle to replace my driving license and car regiatration.

Last year , I wrote about it here... I left my handbag on the hook of the trolley at Aldi and left the trolley in the trolley park in the car park.

I didn't realise until I pulled up outside the house and started to unload... , total panic... wallet with several cards in there.. diary with personal details.. cash.. drivers licence.. and so on..even a laminated copy of my passport

Without attempting to take the shopping out, I spun the car around and raced back to Aldi.. trouble was the dual carriageway was packed with commuters and at a standstill... every second counted.. so I couldn't afford to wait in a long queue of traffic to get to a R/A to come back .. and did a U turn instead right across the central reservation.. and high tailed into Aldi car park. All the trolleys were there but no Bag to be seen.

I ran into Aldi grabbed the first customers svcs asst , and asked if anyone had handed it in.. feeling for sure it was gone forever.. and they said it was, it was in the office because a Man.. ( who right at that moment was at the cash desk paying for his shopping ).. had handed it in...

My Gawd I can't tell you the relief I felt... plus I was able to thank the man in person who handed it in after finding it on the trolley

My wallet stays in my purse in the house or locked in the car. When I leave the car to shop I take only the one or two cards I will use. If I need an ID I take that as well. They go in a secured jacket or pants pocket. Then once back home I put the cards back in the wallet. I started this routine many years ago when purse snatching from shopping carts was growing in my area. Works for me.

Before I started using my phone pocket, I did exactly the same as you have described, slipped my ID and bank card into my jeans or coat pocket, on leaving the car.

Great news. So lucky that an honest person found it.
My heart sank a little further when my wallet was not at the supermarket. Thoughts of someone got it before the service lady found it.

You don't realize that you keep your identity in your wallet. When you loose your wallet, how do you prove you're you? The credit cards are easy to stop and get replaced, but getting replacement ID, like drivers licenses can be a pain. Most states will only take origin embossed birth certificates, not copies.

So true.
With our Birth Certificate we are allowed what is called a Birth Extract - a Certified Copy.

Here in the states we can also go to Town office where you were born and get a certified copy of your birth certificate. We charge $10 in my town. If you are out of state, you can mail a request, a copy of your driver's ID, and check, and they will prepare one for you.

That's what passports are for. Another form of ID.

I lost my wallet once, the good thing was, it only had $4 in it, but my license and SS card were in it. Someone stopped by and returned them, pity I couldn't offer anything but a hearty "Thank you"

I've "misplaced" mine a few times, or it fell and turned so it was hard to see, till it got tuned around or such it was easily visible.

My phone is encased in a wallet that holds my ID, auto registration, medical group card, library card and a couple of credit cards. Should I lose it, it would be a royal pain to replace everything, but the CCs could be called in immediately with fraud alerts and would be rendered useless immediately.

I keep zero identifying information in my car. Nothing with my name or address, in accordance with advice given me by a police officer friend I dated decades ago.

He said people who get into your glove box (thieves, parking valets, repair shop personnel, etc.) get your address from those documents and surmise that nobody's home because your car is sitting at the mall, airport, school, work parking lot, restaurant, repair shop, etc. They sometimes work in a ring. Valet calls his buddies and provides the address.

On the rare occasions when I loaned my car to a family member or friend, I've given them the registration or a copy so if stopped, they had documentation as required by law.

I've had my wallet stolen a couple of times. It's a drag...

I've forgotten my fanny pack (purse) several times in recent months. No big deal; it just meant I couldn't buy anything. But now I have an almost foolproof system that won't let me forget it.

Prior to that, I forgot my keys a few times and locked myself out. So I had to figure out a foolproof system for taking keys with me, having spare keys, etc.

I'm so glad you found your wallet safely. That is scary.

Last week I left home with a couple items in my hands. Jacket, water bottle, shopping bag. Stopped at PAWS thrift on my way to do errands, reached over to the passenger seat to get my purse and it wasn't there. I was also panicked. Thought it could have fallen into the back seat. Not there. I was just grateful to find it sitting on the table when I went back to my apartment. Then back to PAWS...

I don't think I have ever done that.

Most of the time I just leave my wallet under my car seat. Often when my dog is with me I leave the car windows down…so don’t lock the car. I drop my keys, cell phone on the floor boards and do my shopping. Keys stay in the car at the house. My car doesnt look that appealing so do not worry much.

In the UK we're always told that we must not carry any identifying documentation in our cars..Log book, Drivers licence , MOT , Insurance etc... If we're stopped by the Police we're given 7 days to produce the documentation at the nearest Police station...

Conversely in Spain, its illegal to drive without the documentation and can result in an on the spot fine.. however they have a huge problem with Car thefts .. and home burglaries.. so it makes no sense

Assuming you're not joking, I'm stunned at how trusting you are in this day and age.

I keep at least 7-8 Readers all around the house. Every room has at least 2 pairs.
I do the same! Every vehicle has a pair (two in the RV), plus one in my purse. Extras live by my desk. Amazon sells them so cheaply that it's not worth my while to spend time hunting them down. ($2-$3/pair when buying a five pack.)

Once a month or so, I gather up all that are in the house, squirt some dish soap in a large bowl, let them soak for a few minutes, then gently wash, dry, polish, and redistribute.

I lost my wallet three years ago, right when everything started to happen. I really should not say lost, I know exactly what happened. I left it at the counter of a store and I assume the woman who was behind me took it because the next day my credit card had a charge of over $5oo for a wig. Anyway, with the outbreak of COVID at the time it was not fun trying to get through to the banks on the phone (all the branches were closed). The biggest lesson I learned though was never carry my SS card in my wallet. That was a huge hassle and it took about three months to finally get a replacement card. As I have mentioned in another post , since then I never carry my cards in my wallet now. Just a little bit of cash and I pay with my phone and I have my SS card in a safe at home.

And yes, I finally got through to the bank and the charge for the wig was dismissed. I still am amazed that out of anything one could buy with a stolen credit card, why they would pick a wig. I read somewhere that the majority of charges on a stolen credit card are for gas and shoes.
