$5 million is too little:' Activists tell California reparations committee to aim higher

Activists on Wednesday demanded that the state of California pay millions of dollars to each Black resident in reparations as a way to make amends for slavery and subsequent discrimination, dismissing the idea of payments of $5 million per person as "nothing" and "too little."

The demands were made at an in-person meeting of the California Reparations Task Force, which was created by state legislation signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2020. The committee was hearing comments from the public as it considers final recommendations to submit to the California Legislature, which will then decide whether to implement the measures and send them to Newsom's desk to be signed into law.

The task force is considering a proposal to give just under $360,000 per person to approximately 1.8 million Black Californians who had an ancestor enslaved in the U.S., putting the total cost of the program at about $640 billion.

I really don't know what I think about this, other than I'm glad I don't live in California.

I'm so glad I moved out of California last year. It's unrecognizable anymore.

This is absolutely ludicrous. For one thing, the whole idea of reparation is wrong. We are not liable for what our predecessors did, and not all black people are descended from slaves. Any monies paid out should be used to fund facilities such as youth clubs, better schools etc, not paid to individuals.

They already get reparations in the form of affirmative action policies, financial aid for colleges, welfare, job training... What they need is an overhaul of their culture — one that veers away from a culture of drugs, crime, unwed mothers, and a victim mentality, and focuses more on education, skills, and careers... things that will get them out of poverty, although with AI taking over, that might not work any more. Who knows.

Although I have always been politically left, I have always been against reparations. We have acknowledged that slavery was a horrible chapter of American history. So much so that our country and most every other country in the world, would never do that again.

You can't give out free money just because someone's great or great great grandparents suffered being slaves. See what happens? You offer 5 million, and they want more.

Gotta love California. It never was a slave state but it wants people who never owned slaves to pay huge amounts of money to people who never were slaves.

Ridiculous. But I won't be surprised to see it on our voter's ballots. It won't get any further than that, though.
You sure it will make it to the ballot? Or will a decree be issued from on high?

Sorry, reparations is totally a leftist philosophy. There is lots of free money being given out right now to many people for many reasons. If that can happen why would you think this can't happen?

A lot of rich people got enormous handouts from the government during the pandemic as part of the economic impact payments — enough to buy expensive sportscars and other high priced luxury items.

The rich can find ways to get out of paying back student loans and many go without paying any taxes, thanks to loopholes they get their paid for legislators to put into the tax code.

@Myrtle - I just looked it up.

It's a bill proposal, so it only has to get a yea from both state chambers and be signed by the state Gov'r to become a law. What they're asking for is free healthcare, education, homebuying assistance, and a few other such things.; in short, welfare benefits that slave descended recipients, no matter their state of origin, might not otherwise qualify for.

Looks like some lawmakers want to require applicants to show some sort of "proof of chattel" or blatant race-discrimination when trying to buy a home, and that bit can go back to a grandparent or great-grandparent.

Before it goes to chambers, Cali citizens do have an opportunity to be heard via petition or meetings, but the state of Calif makes that process extremely difficult when it wants to, even though the citizens have to pay for this kind of stuff one way or another; i.e., increased medical costs, university tuition and/or fees, property and/or road tax, etc., and even reduced social services for people who rely on welfare. Those include Head Start programs for children, education advancement and job-skills training for teens, school lunch programs, emergency housing, Child Protective Services, senior programs....

That's true, and no one was asked to vote on it. (no John Q. Public, I mean)

Thank you, Murrmurr. I didn't think it would be on the ballot first but I wasn't positive. Now we know. I wonder how California tax payers can manage to pay for this if it is passed. Any ideas?

Btw, California isn't alone in this it's just the biggest financial outlay. Many other states are considering reparations as well as basic guaranteed income programs, some based on racial qualifications. I believe some California cities already have those.

I wouldn't be greedy and need more than five million because my daddy's great grandma was Native American and they were treated horribly, too. I could make do with 5 mil for a while.

Now that I'm thinking about it... would "each resident of the state" actually mean that a family of 10 would get 50 million dollars? Good gracious... I'd love to give the person who came up with this a psyche eval.
