What Are You Saving It For?

Are you saving things and why? I’m a saver. Not just money, anything that I want to keep nice.

I have some clothes that I save for something special. My body might have changed shape or the colour no longer suits me or it’s just not right now. Whatever, I might as well have worn them when I loved them.

Or there’s china in the cabinet that just sits there. I’m using some that sat for years. It now goes in the dishwasher. So what if it breaks, no one else wants it. I don’t have this same philosophy about my crystal wine glasses. They’re for company and I only have four of them.

Money. Sometimes I’m too thrifty. My husband reminds me that I’m worth it and buy what I want.

So what have you set aside that you’re waiting to use?

I'm currently looking in drawers and cupboards for items that are just taking up space and disposing of them. Some go to the op shops but I have trouble throwing out some things to landfill because I feel that there must be some better way to dispose of them.

Hubby's shed is another place where things have been carefully saved for possible future use but most now are so obsolete no-one would want them. I may have to hire a skip to clear out the shed because the most valuable thing in there would be some empty space.

I have some brown, khaki, and dull/olive-green pants, shirts, socks and sunhat. I've got them for and have been saving them for my African safari trip, but I suppose I might never go on it (partly due to the money but mostly because the idea of being on such long airplane flights sounds exhausting), so I should start using the clothes.

I also have many things accumulated over the years. Once in awhile, I will fill bags and boxes with clothes, linen, shoes, books, etc. and give to Green Drop and they come and pick them up. The funds go to purple heart military , or the blind. It's a win-win situation, because I give away things I no longer use, and it helps others. This is an incentive for me to declutter. I have done this at least 6 times in the past three years, and still see more that I can give away.

I started getting rid of things we didn't need as soon as I retired in 2020. I've gotten rid of shoes, suits, shirts... anything I hadn't worn for at least a year... in addition to household items like sheets, towels and cookware. I've taken folders from my office file cabinet to Office Depot to have documents shredded. I have no children, but I want to leave as little as possible for someone else to have to clean up or to easily downsize.

HD...you buy the coolest things! Wish I had room for more sneakers!
Jules..I am a saver. I have a couple of garments I've had since I was in my 20s. This one is polyester but feels like silk against my skin. Even my fashion icon sister, who wears a lot of silk, couldn't tell the difference. I have saved other outfits I've had a long time because I always buy classic clothing. I have four main reasons for this: If they go out of style, they eventually come back in. And buying the same or similar quality items these days would cost an arm and a leg. Also many of my outfits have elastic waists, so my fluctuation in weight is not a problem.

I save other items too after determining they could come in handy some day. People might wonder WTH would she save something like that? I'm so glad I do that because several of these items have proved useful, even years later. Over the past few months that's especially true since we rescued our kitten. I love your husband's attitude about you buying what you want (and obviously deserve).

I think that it was modeled in my family that they way you made yourself happy was to buy yourself something. My mother was notorious for going out to the malls, coming home with bags of stuff, and then returning most of her purchases the following day. The “shopper’s high” was what she was addicted to.

Our buying habits can reflect our psychological status and needs as well. As a child, my parents only bought me one pair of shoes per school year. I over-compensated as an adult by buying lots of pairs of shoes!

I'm absolutely sure that's the reason I have the Imelda Marcos syndrome to this day. I was bought one pair of shoes every year, and had to wear them even if they were in holes, and let all the water in..or even if I'd grown out of them.

Since being old enough to buy my own shoes.. I have had an obsession with shoes being in perfect condition, and never being short of them

I save gift bags, bows and ribbons, and tissue paper. Occasionally a box or two. I have 5 kids, a husband, bunch of grandkids, several friends whose birthdays we celebrate every year and Christmas to buy for, so there are always lots of presents to wrap.

I save bins and other storage type containers. I have cardboard, plastic, cloth, wicker, in different sizes and shapes. You just never know when I might need a different size or shape as I organize and reorganize my different parts of our house.

I save food containers..sour cream tubs, deli meat containers etc. We’re always having family get togethers and they come in handy when I’m making to-go parcels for whoever wants to take home leftovers.

I save small jars and pots…like the kind a facial moisturizer might come in? Little ones for which I’ve always found many uses. Some recent uses: to hold my days worth of supplements, a small container of touch up paint (our navy blue kitchen island takes a beating) small picture hanging nails, the beads from a necklace that broke and I haven’t gotten it fixed yet.

Many years ago I watched a woman be prohibited from purchasing anything in the big store. Two clerks lectured her. They had a record of her purchases and she returned every single item the next day.

They all look as good as new. You must have a shoe fetish! I'm the same with handbags. I enjoy looking at my bags, sitting on the shelf, but I usually only use the same 3, depending on where I am going.

I wouldn't call it a Fetish... it's more a fear of not being able to afford shoes and having to wear old worn out shoes .. as in my childhood...

I save boxes, yogurt containers, etc. They come in handy.

I also save random bits of plastic or metal. They come in handy too. You know those dumb little hangers that come with socks and even household goods? I cut one up to hold my screen in place.

Years ago when I was working, I had LOTS of shoes. Our company had a dress code. The women had to wear dresses or skirts; the guys had to wear dress pants, dress shirt and tie...every day. So, I had shoes for every outfit. I had over 30 pair of heels at home and a box full in my cubicle at work. Now, 40 years later, I have 7 pair of shoes in my closet.

I'm a reader so my obsession was books. In one of our moves around the country, I boxed up 38 cartons of books and took them to the local library. I still have a lot of books but I'm being more selective now and have used my Kindle for reading more then I use to. It's not the same as holding a book in my hands but I've cut down on the clutter. I'm getting a box ready for Goodwill.

Like you Holly, I have a few more too, but at least I do get around to wearing them. These shoe racks fit perfectly in the bottom of the wardrobe and each insert is a skeletal shoe tree to keep the shoes in good shape.
