A male GP was prevented from donating blood to the Scottish NHS because he refused to sign a form saying he was not pregnant.

Dr Steffen McAndrew, 41, booked an appointment at a blood donation centre in Ayr on Tuesday evening.

However, he was told by a nurse he could not continue unless he confirmed he was not carrying a child.

'I can't believe they would refuse a donation from a man based on the fact I refused to say if I was pregnant,' he told the Herald.

'I just wish basic common sense could be applied in these situations. A man can't be pregnant.'

Dr McAndrew, who works at a surgery in Prestwick, said he did not want to answer the pregnancy question because he refused to 'placate the gender brigade'.


'I can understand those who have suggested, ''just tick the box'', to enable a donation. However it is the principle of the matter.'
 

Yes. What exactly is the gender brigade? Maybe the area has a lot of people in the process of transgendering who might look male, but still have enough female hormones to be pregnant.
 
It said the question was introduced in April 2022, but confirmed plans to "update the wording" of the question later this year in order to instruct potential blood donors to tick no if the question is "not applicable"

I've had forms that had questions which "If you are a female" so I didn't bother with those. They could also have a box which says "Not applicable"

Then again, this crap is just more insanity.

Exactly! What a stupid thing to take a stand against, especially for a doctor!

There are questions like that on almost every questionnaire.

. the drinking age here is 18... and we don't have to show proof of age if we are clearly over 18... but conversely.. if we're buying from a supermarket and the cashier is under 21 she has to have a supervisor come to the till, and clear it..
 
The form was asking a yes or no question," Are you pregnant?' Was he pregnant? No. He was male, so he could not be pregnant. So sign the form, saying he was not pregnant, because he wasn't, stop being a PITA and give blood.

It's funny... you can tell a person's political leanings by how they feel about having to answer that question. :ROFLMAO:
