Ralph Paul Yarl was shot Thursday evening after his parents asked him to pick up his 11-year-old twin brothers and he mistakenly went to a home in the 1100 block of Northeast 115th Street instead of Northeast 115th Terrace in Kansas City, Missouri, police said.

He was taken to a hospital in stable condition with life-threatening injuries, police said. He was released Saturday and is recovering at home, attorney Lee Merritt, who has been retained by the family, told NBC News.

The homeowner who shot Ralph hasn't been detained. Ralph is Black; the homeowner is White.

Just another irresponsible gun owner.

There was another similar shooting that I read about this morning but I forget the details. And then there's the other shooting by the police where they shot a Black motorist 24 times but won't be charged. That case is probably justified, but things are building right now for the possibility of more protests and riots.

Yes, this happened here in my county but several miles away...the local news crews are going nuts to report every
little detail on this, several times each news cycle....

I wish to hell that when this stuff always comes up, at least the "rest of the story" would be told as well. The homeowner is 84 years old and HAS BEEN CHARGED with two felonies. But I guess it's more fun to stir the pot and get the bajillionth gun debate going, eh?

Actually he was held for 24 hours and released w/out charges, but Monday afternoon the charges were filed.

Happy to hear the young man is home recovering!

There was nothing wrong with the report in the first post of this thread, what are you getting all bent out of shape about?

Guess what, when a young man can't ring a doorbell without a lunatic shooting at him, then another gun discussion needa to be had. Calm down! The victim and his family are the ones who should be angry, not you.

Here's that other shooting story I mentioned in the OP:

A man in upstate New York was charged with murder on Monday in the killing of a woman who was in a car that mistakenly drove into his driveway, officials said.

The woman and the three friends she was with never got out of the car on Saturday night, Jeffrey J. Murphy, the Washington County sheriff, said at a news conference. They were turning around after realizing their error when the man, Kevin Monahan, 65, stepped out of his house, in Hebron, N.Y., and fired at least two shots at the car, the sheriff said.

One of the bullets struck the woman, Kaylin Gillis, 20, and the group drove about six miles to a nearby town before they got through to 911, Sheriff Murphy said. Emergency services workers responded and performed lifesaving measures on Ms. Gillis, but she was pronounced dead, the sheriff said.

The victim in this case is White, as is the shooter. Lock him up!

Going to a wrong house or driving into the wrong driveway can be a death sentence these days. These trigger happy or paranoid people should not even own guns. You have to have some form of common sense and some responsibility to have firearms.

Here is some information about the young man who was shot. Yes, I'm angry, but the old, racist f**k who shot him should be put away for the rest of his miserable life. Amazing how ignorant people are.

Thank goodness this promising young man is recuperating so he can eventually continue to follow his pursuits and possibly make our world a better place.

"Ralph Yarl, the 16-year-old boy who was shot after he rang the wrong doorbell to pick up his brothers, is a gentle soul” and gifted student who wants to study chemical engineering in college, a former teacher said.

Ralph was shot Thursday evening after his parents asked him to pick up his 11-year-old twin brothers and he mistakenly went to a home in the 1100 block of Northeast 115th Street instead of Northeast 115th Terrace in Kansas City, Missouri, police said.

A Good Samaritan who ran to Yarl's aid said, "He didn't deserve to get shot."

He was stable in a hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. He was released Saturday and is recovering at home, said attorney Lee Merritt, who has been retained by the family.

Megan Lilien, who taught Ralph at the Missouri Scholars Academy, a three-week residential program for academically gifted students, said he was a "highly intelligent" and observant student, curious about the world.

He was among 330 rising high school juniors chosen last summer to attend the prestigious program, which requires a nomination, at the University of Missouri’s Columbia campus.

“He was curious, intelligent. He’s quiet, but he’s literally taking in the world. You just notice. He’s just observing everything,” Lilien said.

She taught a college-level chemistry-based science class and spent about three hours in the lab with Ralph and about 17 other students every day of the program.

“He has this sweet face. He wasn’t the one who was talking all the time or answering all the questions, but you knew he was learning at all times. He was kind. He was definitely respected by everyone in the group,” Lilien said.

“He was still working, still trying to figure out the problem, when we had to wrap up,” she added.

She said the news of the shooting “has me feeling nauseous.”

“It’s devastating. There are no words. I just don’t know how something like this happens. It’s unimaginable. This is a kid who doesn’t deserve to be experiencing this in his life at all,” Lilien said. “I just have to think about the positive and that he’s going to be able to pursue his dream.”

On the last night of the summer program, as part of a tradition, the students light a candle and share a memory of a time at the camp that made a difference to them.

Lilien said Ralph’s memory touched her, but she did not want to share what he said. “I want to keep that sacred,” she said.

Ralph is also a clarinetist who recently earned Missouri All-State Band recognition with an honorable mention.

I wonder what it is like to live with the realisation that every day you venture out into the world could be your last because of the amount of people carrying guns.
I wonder what it is like to fear being pulled over by the police because it could be your last day on earth.
Luck of the draw that I was born in Australia, not going to leave this country, it is a mad, bad world out there.

It's amazing that he wasn't killed, I'm very thankful to hear he is still alive and breathing.
It is amazing he wasn't killed! Thank God! I hope that child's family sues the bazoobas out of that old man! I'd have his house, his car, his retirement savings, his SS checks...the whole nine by the time I was finished with his evil a*s if he'd shot my son or any of my grandchildren! Of course I wonder if the boy had been White would he have done the same thing. I hope the charges stick like glue and he gets to spend the rest of his miserable life in prison. If the charges don't stick I believe the city will have quite a protest going on.

So sad. Americans must live with fear of death every day.
It is sad, but fortunately most of us don't live in fear.

About 20,000 Americans are murdered by gun a year, way too many, but still not a huge number given our population. That's about half of the number who die in traffic accidents.

There are some neighborhoods where the risk is high, I don't live in one of those.

Yep.

If the facts are as I have read I agree 100%. Always have to add that caveat when depending on the news media for info.

I suppose at 84 he might blame dementia, which would be a criminal defense, but hopefully not a civil one. Even if that is the case he needs to be detained in a way that there is no risk of this happening again, not set free.

I was reading more about Ralph this morning and what a bright future that young man has ahead of him... he's passionate about learning new things and that's so nice to see! As for the old coot who shot him, I agree they need to do something with him and not let him off easy because of his age. I'll have to remember to keep checking back on Ralph to see how far he actually does go!

I hadn't heard this one before... it makes me think of all the times over the years that we've turned around in someone's driveway. I absolutely *hate* the way we all have to even think of these things now.

Here's another one .... two kids shot, apparently by someone in the mob, and a man badly beaten for being in the wrong place.

Who bears the blame for this?

Chicago ‘Teen Takeover’ Floods Downtown Area, Two Shot And Several Beaten By Mob

A social media-fueled “Teen Takeover” in the Millennium Park area of Chicago Saturday night spun out of control, resulting in two people shot, 15 arrested, property damage, and police outnumbered in attempts to shut down the disturbance.

The incident mirrored a similar scene last year in Chicago. On Saturday, crowds estimated by various sources in the hundreds up to thousands descended on the Millennium Park, which bars those under 21 after a certain hour. Instead, the teens smashed cars and jumped up and down on trapped vehicles, with police having to escort tourists back to their hotels in the area.

Large groups began gathering earlier in the evening, responding to social media prompts for a takeover. They quickly blocked traffic and mayhem ensued.

Chicago police said two teens,16 and 17 years old, were wounded by a gunman in the crowd.

One woman told Fox 32 her husband was attacked and beaten after a group of teens jumped up and down on the couple’s windshield. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Hundreds of police officers assisted by SWAT teams attempted to restore order as gunfire was reported multiple times.

“Last night CPD monitored activity happening across the city and officers were in place to quickly respond to active incidents and large gatherings,” police said in a statement. “We will continue to have sufficient resources in place as we work to strengthen safety in every neighborhood.”

This one took place over the weekend too. The cops have been defunded since the 'peaceful' demonstrations in 2020. Is it really any wonder that people feel they have to protect themselves?

Compton residents say street takeovers have become common; LASD to partner with CHP to stop looting

COMPTON, Calif. (KABC) -- Sheriff's deputies in Compton have returned to their patrol duties Monday following a chaotic weekend that involved a series of street takeovers and a mob of looters that left a trail of destruction at local stores.

And, law enforcement officials say they are developing partnerships and a plan to stop the increasingly common occurrence of street takeovers in Compton.

Video captured a wild scene at an Arco gas station near Alondra Boulevard and Central Avenue early Sunday morning where a large group was caught on video bum-rushing an Arco gas station and stealing thousands of dollars' worth of merchandise, all while the clerk on duty hid inside.

The video shows one man breaking the glass door while dozens of looters crowd behind him. Moments later, the group was seen grabbing everything from drinks, snacks, alcohol and even condoms.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department told Eyewitness News thousands of dollars' worth of merchandise was stolen and serious damage was done to the store.

Investigators said shots were fired about a block away from the store raid though no injuries were reported. Meanwhile, staff at the gas station told ABC7 the clerk who hid in the bathroom is doing okay.

Residents of Compton say the street takeovers have become a frequent problem in the area in which the looting took place, and they say the scenes captured at the Arco were bound to happen at some point.

"This intersection, this goes down 2 to 3 nights a week. We hear the motors roaring, if you're close by you probably can't breathe after they got going," said Ricky Finley, a resident of Compton.
