Our walmart usually only has one, or occasionally two, regular checkout lines open, and the rest is self checkout. The lines are always really long, and out into the isle. I have almost stopped shopping inside the store because it is longer to stand in line to check out than to go through the store and pick out the items you are shopping for.
The other day, we went to Sam’s Club, and they only had one manned checkout lane, too.
We have started either picking up the groceries at the curbside pickup area, or having them delivered to our house. The problem is that the shoppers do not pick out fruit and veggies like I would do. If I order a pineapple , and they are $2 each, I want a large pineapple, and not the smallest one on the shelf, but they always choose the smallest size of everything.
It seems like automation with everything is the direction we are headed.
I often think about that we have kind of come full circle. Way back when, grocery stores delivered to people, and the milkman came by and brought milk, so people could mostly get groceries that way. Then, supermarkets came along, and we all started doing our own shopping , especially as more and more women started driving cars.
