It may be a rumor but I heard our walmart is going to all self checkouts!

Hold on just a cotton pickin' second.. I took that generic trolley picture from google.. never looked closely at it, and now I can see it's a picture of a trolley from Walmart, which means that some of the stores in the USA must be already using our system... :D

I remember the days of no self-checkouts ; there was a lot of communication going on between staff and customers and between customers and customers - the staff still today are much faster at packing my goods and safer than I can - so everything moves faster ; so these stores have slowed down the traffic and just don't care as long as they can save a dollar? OR - are they very concerned about the state of laziness in shoppers and wish to keep us active and nimble? I for one as a male get more and more frustrated with this system and less communicative or cooperative but I must admit the store staff just seem to handle me so well!!

I hate the self-checkouts that require you to unload and scan each item and then bag it. I refuse to use them. The only grocery stores I go into now are Aldi and Sprout's Farmers Market. I do get items from Wal-Mart that I cannot get at Aldi but subscribed to the WalMart+ program and get the groceries delivered to my front door. I think it is saving me money since I don't go in the store and buy things I don't need on a whim.

We stopped at a Walmart a few months ago which had only self checkout....What a Zoo! People were stacked up all over the checkout area with carts full of items. We just had a couple of items, and after watching this mess for several minutes, we put down our items and left....never going there again.

I heard that our local walmart is going to all self checkouts and was wondering if any of you heard that about your walmart. I personally don't like them and have only used them a few times. Thanks
I haven't heard that, and like you I've only used them a few times and prefer a live cashier. But times are changing, and if it's self checkout only, I'll make the decision on whether to continue shopping there. Don't know if I will or I won't, maybe just not that often. Regardless, I'll deal with it, not a horrible thing when you look at the big picture, we still have a lot of choices available and things are pretty good in the US, although not always ideal. Not gonna sweat the small stuff.

If I have more than 20 items, I prefer a cashier.

It’s not just Walmart that’s changing; they all are if they can save a buck.

I really don’t mind self-checkout if I only have a few items. Then again, I enjoyed playing “store” in kindergarten. For a week’s worth of groceries, it’s best to have someone fast and efficient at the register…

Same here. I prefer to use self checkout for a few items.
I also would prefer the scan gun like Sam's has for more than a few. It's convenient to just leave them in the cart, scan and go. I have bags in the car.
I'd also prefer that if they are going to cut down on cashiers that they hire the best ones. Ones that have a clue.

I prefer self checkout. I can make sure every item rings up correctly and I don't have to worry about some sickly cashier spreading germs on my items.

I would love the scan as you shop option but haven't seen that at any store around here.

If true, that could finish them off. There are many that will not use self-checkout. In the one regular checkout left open there is a line a mile long. Personally, I only shop with cash at WM and only for a few items, if at all. Too many problems with credit cards so I do not trust them.

Aldi foods by us, on the other hand, has clerks at checkouts and you never wait long in line as they open new checkouts if needed.

Our walmart usually only has one, or occasionally two, regular checkout lines open, and the rest is self checkout. The lines are always really long, and out into the isle. I have almost stopped shopping inside the store because it is longer to stand in line to check out than to go through the store and pick out the items you are shopping for.
The other day, we went to Sam’s Club, and they only had one manned checkout lane, too.

We have started either picking up the groceries at the curbside pickup area, or having them delivered to our house. The problem is that the shoppers do not pick out fruit and veggies like I would do. If I order a pineapple , and they are $2 each, I want a large pineapple, and not the smallest one on the shelf, but they always choose the smallest size of everything.

It seems like automation with everything is the direction we are headed.
I often think about that we have kind of come full circle. Way back when, grocery stores delivered to people, and the milkman came by and brought milk, so people could mostly get groceries that way. Then, supermarkets came along, and we all started doing our own shopping , especially as more and more women started driving cars.
Now, we are back to having things delivered.

It's final. They've ruined shopping.

I know that some Kroger stores are using the scan gun here in the US but I haven't been able to find one close to me. I guess I'll look for a Walmart that has it. I just want to try it, kinda like a kid with a new toy.

I agree.

Hey Jim, its been a while since I've seen you. Good to have you back.
Thanks. Eleven weeks in 3 hospitals after falling and breaking my left leg in 4 places, plus being diagnosed with second degree heart block, resulting in getting a pacemaker put in. Liver enzymes were found to be way too high, so I was tested for all of the HEP variants, negative results. Last 4 weeks in a rehab facility learning to walk again on my left leg. Home now and slowly working on my ability to walk, and rebuild my leg and arm muscles, after so many weeks of being in bed. My Wife was a champ all through though this journey, visiting me every day of the 11 weeks. All of that was no charge at all to me. Thank god for Canadian health care coverage. JimB.

Wow, you have had a rough time. Sounds like you are recovering, but I imagine the leg and arm muscles will take a long time to get back to normal.

Yes. I have a 2 month certificate for free physio therapy at any local clinic in my part of Toronto. Again a Provincial health care benefit program. I lost a lot of weight ( now just under 200 lbs ) which is the lowest weight I have ever been in my adult life. A whole new wardrobe will be required now. JimB.

With the customer using the scan guns, isn’t it easier to steal? They can fake scanning and then do an “oops, I didn’t realize it didn’t scan it” routine.
