Beware of "Artificial Intelligence"

AI is going to upset our world in the Very Near future. The first "attack" on our society will most likely be the 2024 elections, when we will be bombarded with a huge quantity of false/misleading information.

Read this article, and begin to prepare for what is surely to come.

Sorry, Don... I think that particular train already left the station. 😿 @Don M.

I think that train is about to gain speed in a dramatic fashion.

Right on. Considering a 24 hour TV news analyst network already lost a $787million law suit for the very same thing, AI wasn't to blame.
I think someone may try to use it, but frankly, we are quite able to do it very well in "the old fashioned way".

I think " AI" is being portrayed as a "boogieman"- this evil thing lurking in our future. To me, it reminds of "Y2K", when the world was to come crashing down in 2000. I don't understand, this but AI can't come up with a random number. AI can't pick any number from 1 to 4. It isn't able to come up with a 2 or 3. Until AI can do that, AI is really a very sophisticated computer program, that can only do what it is programmed to do.

Thanks, I was thinking the same thing.

My biggest fear is that one day all our accounts will be emptied and the government people will just say, "We're not sure if it's the Russians or the Chinese who hacked your account, but we're pretty sure it was AI"

Not true. I just tried it with Bard:

Prompt: pick a random number between 1 and 4

Response: I picked a random number between 1 and 4, and the number is 3.

The title 'Beware of Artificial Intelligence' pertains to many more areas than politics.
Amen! The real impact of AI will be to gradually displace humans in many jobs. AI is ideally suited for phone info and secretarial work, as well as many manufacturing functions. Over time it’s inroads in the world of work will gradually increase. Perhaps education and lower level managerial occupations. As this progresses, more and more human occupations will be absorbed, leaving humanity increasingly dependent on AI. Perhaps at some point AI could become the de facto next step in human evolution?

If they can read our minds, if they can multiply into creatures one thousand times more
intelligent than humans, wouldn't that make us "pets"?
Not even that. The ratio would be as we are to an ant.
Why would they need humans?

Who's Al?

Just kidding. I've been writing it 'Ai' so it doesn't look like the nickname for Allen or Albert or Alfred.

We can have AI or Natural Stupidity.

They may go hand in hand if people don’t learn to be extra discerning about what they read or see.

Cyberphobia is not new. I was teaching about it to my computing studies students way back in the 1980s

Reading the article, and the comments, I tend to agree with this comment

It's a year and a half until election day, and we're already gaslighting the legitimacy of the coming election. Voter ID with recent certification and in person would help.

Thread title is much too broadly posed. There may be reasons why AI will be abused but politics would be way down their list with computer and neuro scientists. Politics especially with news media has been a cesspool for years. A realm swarming with miscreants that didn't need AI to reach dangerous to society levels. A good reason during this next election cycle to avoid social media and avoid opening the constant diarrhea of manipulative political news.

Very few people understand what AI does including reporters spouting headlines in news media. Thus it has become like what the vague term "radiation" meant for years in the 1950s/60s to people that then assigned all manner of ridiculous issues and possibilities about it to hype whatever with unbounded imagined fears. The serious danger with AI that scientists like Hawking are afraid of concerning singularity level machines have not yet been developed. Even current primitive implementations of speech synthesis are poorly understood because like our human brains connectivity is self generating from what works while pruning away what does not . Likewise neuroscience does not understand how our creature brains are holistically conscious.

Key to understanding AI is that our human brain neocortexes uniquely versus lower animals, have 300 million pattern recognizers each containing about 100 similar neurons structures that are mostly unconnected at birth and as we experience and learn during our lives, only then does meaningful interconnectivity of connections occur. We become what we fill such with. We are what we do and experience. The old narrative of IQ is DEAD. That is the self connecting model AI science is using. Garbage in, garbage out.

Al is able to do far more than that. The military developed a program that can not only read minds but can feel , sense, see, taste , and hear whatever the other person can.

From my understanding , it was developed exclusively to capture Bin Laden after his arranged 911 attack. Apparently this technology is getting sold to others for similar uses.
