i always felt that online communication should be as 'organic' as in person conversations---which means the topic may shift, branch out, sometimes come back to OP as new people discover the thread.That once you start a thread you no longer own it. It is in the public domain. People can and do diverge off into areas that may have little or no relevance to the original post. And that is a very good thing!
The only thing i don't like is when someone deliberately sabotages what could have been an interesting and fun thread by showing their prejudices. i won't waste a lot of my time arguing--say my piece and i'm out. And i've had a person who contributed to a thread spinning out contentiously demand what i, as OP was going to do to get it back on track. Being male he didn't take a clue even when i said quite clearly that everyone who comments has some responsibility for threads' content not just OP.
