Weight Loss Accountability/Support Group Thread

No I didn’t start the thread @MarkD [/USER]. I’m just a contributor.
The metal knee sounds serious and I’m surprised how soon they started therapy but it’s clearly worked well for you.

Hey @CallMeKate , you look like you’re right on track. Is the KFC bowl an actual dish from KFC? Your shrimp dish is something my msn would love too. Will you be walking soon?

@Alligatorob, , you don’t do things 1/2 way either I see. You’ve taken this challenge by the horns. Your workout schedule is very impressive and that sherbet you’re eating has me drooling.
Then again, I’m not really craving anything lately except healthy food.

@MarkD, if you did a healthy eating class 3 times and lost 50 pounds, you’ve got this. Ten pounds for you should be easy.

@Happyflowerlady, I’m so jealous that you can swim. Swimming is one of my favourite exercises. The buoyancy of the water is so supportive and perfect for healing injuries. Is it an outdoor swimming pool? The gym I used to go to had an Olympic size indoor pool to two smaller outdoor pools . It was wonderful swimming outdoors on a nice sunny day. I really miss it.
Like yourself, I usually exercise before I eat. It seems to work for me also. Plus I find that exercise decreases my appetite, as long as I don’t overdo it.

It’s week 3 today and I have lost 4 pounds which means I’m 20% closer to my goal challenge.

I decided to step up my diet game plan some by restricting my carbohydrates, increasing my vegetable intake and keeping my protein intake the same.

Most of my meals are soups and salads which I actually like so it works.

At the same time I decreased my aerobics. It’s worked out really well. Now the weight is coming off much easier. Curbing the carbs seems to work well for me.

@Della - venting about doing your weight loss challenge is perfectly acceptable. I think that’s one of the reasons why this thread was made. The thread isn’t about positive experiences only. That’s just not reality. A challenge includes both positive and negative experiences as well as neutral ones.

Fluctuations in weight are ALL part of the journey AND considered normal and expected. My first week, I lost my first pound but my 2nd week I gained 5. It was a disappointing discovery.

Something that I later realized was that when I started this weight loss challenge, I was severely dehydrated. Once I started drinking 2 to 3 litres a day, my weight went up but it also was quickly lost . My body adapted to the changes within days.

You’ve lost a significant amount of weight in the recent past. If you did it then, you can do it again. Every stall you have, come here and vent, we shall help you. Focussing on just the numbers, isn’t helpful. Focussing on the journal to reach the goal, IS.

Drinking between 2 to 3 lites a day can really help curb the appetite.
Why not join us? We’d love to have you.

Yes, the KFC Bowl is something they serve (or maybe used to serve... haven't been there in years, but the copycat recipe is all over the 'Net, so I tried it and we enjoy it.) The distance walking is not going to happen yet. Doc said "ask me again in two months."

Congrats on the 4 lb. and being 20% closer to your challenge, Patty... that's great!

I don't see a post from Della, so I can't respond to that. What you said about venting concerning a weight loss challenge, I don't know what that means either... this is a support and accountability group... no challenges involved. I hate challenges unless it's a personal one I've set for myself... so even though I'm a little lost here, please join us if you'd like to have support for your journey, @Della .

Hey Kate
Della started her own thread here…..
https://www.seniorforums.com/threads/weight-frustrations-gripes-complaints-and-negativity.84388/
…., so I offered her support
Being a support group for people losing weight is a challenge to some, including me. Those with thyroid disorder often find losing weight extra challenging which @Della and I share. I really don’t think it matters what words I use Kate as long as I’m here supporting others who share the same goal. If you don’t like the word challenge then don’t use it. I’m probably going to.

I'm wondering if you misunderstood what I meant here... it's not about using a word. I just didn't want anyone to think that this thread/group is a "weight loss challenge" because some wouldn't join because of that. Heck, *I* wouldn't join a weight loss "challenge" myself. It generally indicates a competition. If that's what everyone else wants, that's fine, but that's not (in my mind) what a support group does.

challenge verb
: to call out to duel or combat
: to invite into competition

No I completely understood you. You’ve taken a completely different meaning of the word challenge than I have. I’ve used the second meaning of challenge here meaning ‘a stimulating task or problem.’ The reason I use this is due to the fact that Della and I share hypothyroidism which brings an extra challenge to losing weight. I wasn’t trying to change the title of your thread. I’m merely connecting to another member and used the word challenge. 🤷‍♀️

For myself, support includes discussing the trials AND challenges of weight loss. I wasn’t meaning to offend anyone by using the word challenge. If the word is that threatening to you, I shall try not to use it in the future , Kate.

No one is offended. Or "threatened." ❓ My goodness. Of course a support group is to share both good and bad. I thought everyone here knew that. In fact, I think I added that to the opening post. (Yes, I did. I just checked.) But I'm not going to challenge anyone to lose a certain amount of weight which is what a "weight loss challenge" is by definition. This link talks about weight loss challenges at work, but I think it would be the same for a forum support group. It discourages more than it helps.

Yes those ARE the words Della used

and not my responsibility. I merely offered support to her which I ‘thought’ was a good thing. Anyway I sure wasn’t expecting this reaction over the use of a word.

Have a lovely day Kate.

If I didn't say what part I was responding to, it was this:

Patty, Patty. I was simply replying to this, what you said to Della: "venting about doing our weight loss challenge is perfectly acceptable." And making the point that this is a support group and not a weight loss challenge. You are saying you didn't say that to Della in post 151?

Yes, sorry I used her words. I’ll try better next time. 😳

Could you please let this go now? 🤷‍♀️
This is beyond ridiculous.

Good Monday, everyone! The heat here has been overwhelming and today will be the same, but I'm patiently waiting for fall 🍁 to arrive. On the weight loss front, I have finally hit that 5 lb mark and that feels good. I started a little before this group started, so still averaging about a pound a week and that's a good rate for me.

Not sure what's for supper tonight, but my table is half filled with garden produce that includes tomatoes, 🍅 zucchini, and cukes. 🥒 I'll get creative and see what I can do with it all!

I thought we were all starting July 17th.
My mistake once more.
The *group* was started on the 17th. And I mentioned previously that I'd started the weight loss before... and you responded to that. This is not a weight loss challenge so there was nothing about "starting at the same time." :(

I never mentioned the word challenge.
We all had a certain amount of weight we wanted to lose and I thought we were calculating from that day forward. Clearly I was wrong. My mistake once more. Now I know. Thanks.

You're quite welcome. I was going to make a list here of the posts where you used "weight loss challenge" and the one where I told you I'd started in late June, but that would be passive aggressive so I won't. (y) I'm sorry if something I said triggered you... it wasn't my intention. I was only trying to clarify what the support group is and isn't. I hope you'll have a successful day.

Nothing triggered me.
I had a conversation with Della which ‘seemed’ to be picked apart and I tried to understand why. Maybe the word challenge triggered you and I felt kind of picked on and this isn’t the first time this has happened. I don’t see you doing this to any others here.
You got upset about some members thinking the thread was mine and told them off but that had nothing to do with me.

You were going to make a list of the times I used weight loss challenge?
If I’ve used the words weight loss challenge, then I clearly made a mistake. I did not realize the words I used were that important but I see they are to you. I thought we hashed this out already?

If this is all about accountability, I would have thought that data provided , like: date started, weight loss wanted / weight loss achieved would matter. If it doesn’t, then how does one know they are being accountable?

Anyway, I really get the impression that my presence here isn’t wanted so I shall remove myself from the thread.

Good luck to you all in your efforts. I sincerely wish you the best.

1. I'm so sorry something has upset you, Patty.
2. I don't know what you mean by "got upset about...." There was no upset, I just told the poster that I wasn't PP when I welcomed him.
3. Things like this don't "trigger" me.
4. Not sure where you got the impression that you're not welcome, but of course you are, and always have been. We'll be here for support if you decide to return to the thread at any point.

I looked over all my posts to see how often I used the words ‘weight loss challenge’ in this thread besides my post to Della and it’s only once and is post #46.

I’m very sorry for using those weights in my post. Maybe I used them because it IS a challenge for me. I certainly didn’t mean to offend anyone by using them. 😨

I am going to see my GP doctor a week from today my weight loss is one thing we shall discuss as I am still dropping pounds here and not really trying to I just have lost my appetite for food like I used to have. My next jeans look like they need to be 32's down from a 42! The 34's are starting to get loose on me, all this started with my surgery on my leg on 4/6/23. Yet the hospital food was decent I had no complaints there at all.

I weighed 193 this morning.

Hey @PeppermintPatty , @CallMeKate , and @Della good discussion of what this tread is and isn't. I like that its not a challenge but for support. We can each choose to set goals, or not, what matters is mutual support. And I thank y'all for giving it!

That said if someone wants to make a challenge within the thread I don't see a problem with that, so long as we understand its optional.
I certainly didn’t mean to offend anyone by using them.
I don't see anything offensive in any of your posts!
Anyway, I really get the impression that my presence here isn’t wanted so I shall remove myself from the thread.
I feel just the opposite about you, and hope you don't remove yourself.

When I went through my big weight loss, 360 to 143 in a couple of years, I know I overshot the losing. In the 140s I did not feel good, I think I got too skinny. Gained more of it back that I should have and now trying to lose a little. I think I feel best in the 160s.

My point is if you are still losing weight you are wise to look into it, finding the ideal weight is hard for a lot of people.

I really like all the replies here from everyone and see none out of context nor place from everyone who replied it is a very good topic I sure can relate to here and with my lifestyle here there are not many I can. I feel the same as PP when I mention my love for fishing and shooting and realize I am the odd one out there on here. But it sure will not stop me any from posting about it as it is part of my life here.

Good to hear you won't be stopped from posting, Wayne... that's what we're here for and I'm so glad you joined us! I hope your doc appointment goes well. (y)

You're not kidding there! Plus sometimes "the ideal weight" changes as we get closer to goal. When I started, the major goal was to get rid of that infamous "Covid 15" that people talk about... well it was just like 8 for me over those three years, but I shot for a 15 loss anyhow. Then I started thinking 18 wouldn't hurt me... or even 20 but I'll probably stop at 15-18.

Plus sometimes "the ideal weight" changes as we get closer to goal.
Absolutely! In my experience anyway.

I have a kind of analogy, when I was doing my big weight loss I was doing a lot of walking for exercise, and some hiking. I set a goal of getting to the top of the mountain closest to our house, walking from the house. It took months, but when I finally got there I just discovered that it was one peak of many, some higher some lower connected by ridges. Not really sure what the top was. So I just declared success and tried to appreciate the accomplishment. Kind of a similar problem finding my "ideal" weight. Once I thought I had gotten there I wasn't sure it was right... still not sure what's right...

Picture of the mountain below and a corner of my house. If you look closely you can see a snow field that hasn't melted yet, its the peak just above that. In a straight line only about 2 or 3 miles away, but there is no trail and the rise is about 3,500 ft. About the hardest 2 or 3 mile walk I have ever done. Coming down was the worst, really hard on my knees. Could almost not walk for a week afterwards. Have not tried it again since surgery.
