Awkward-Smoker hates it when I step outside when they're smoking

The neighbor smoker hates it when people come out when they're smoking after knowingly renting in a non smoking apartment building. Don't like being around them either and it's not just the smoke but I can go to my car for something and when I return towards the building they have or are trying to sneek back inside wanting nothing to do with people. Just them and their cigarette. They're not hiding the smoking just themselves. But they really resent it when one comes out with them and their cig.

If you need a nicotine fix, you gotta have it. Nonsmokers are an extremely judgmental lot. They look at smokers, like they have syringes sticking out of their arms. But smokers aren't going to roll you for a Newport 100. Addiction is not pretty, and a lot of "tsk tsks" doesn't help, either.
What amazes me is that when we were kids, it was common courtesy to offer drinks and cigarettes to visitors. Camels or Pall Malls were in open boxes on coffee tables for all to smoke.

Now it's Cocaine...

I smoked for 20 years, and my job was a housecleaner. My costumers were near me quite a bit and nothing was ever said about my smell. They did instruct me to smoke outside if there were no smokers in their house. That was from 1984-2004.

Then a long time customer ( 23 years ) said she had a friend that needed a housecleaner. She then said "I can tell you this because I am a friend. You stink. I want you to clean yourself up before meeting her.". Yikes!!! I then asked my dentist if I smelled offensive. He said he never thought that.

I think this is one of those cultural changes involving offensive behaviors that were once not noticed and we allowed "bad" behavior in public. Things change. I do not like the attitude some have of viewing smokers with contempt. The air is polluted too. Who are we supposed to feel offended by to really show our contempt for ruining our environment?

I had a friend who quit smoking (and drinking) for years, and was always on his wife's case not to smoke. Then he divorced his wife and left her. Then he went crazy. I don't know if the divorce, which was his choice, made him crazy, or if he divorced his wife because he went crazy. But I've already digressed.

Back on track; When he started smoking (and drinking) again, he decided to light up in my car, something he never permitted his wife to do. He just pulled out a cig and got ready to light up. I told him I didn't want him to smoke in my car, and he started complaining about it, actually passing judgement on me for being such a dick, which I observed, but ignored, because I had decided he was crazy by that time.

The point is, smokers are judging us, just as we judge them. Not all smokers and non smokers do this, of course, but it can go both ways.

I live in a nonsmoking apartment building so I would not have to try to tolerate the smoke from smokers. I am not being judgemental......I need to breathe. My son smokes and even though he does not smoke when he comes here, sometimes the odor on him makes me gag. I suffer from Multiple Chemical Sensitivities and just being around certain chemicals that are in the air from others things as well as smoke (perfume, laundry detergent, household cleaners, etc.) can cause me to become really sick.

The thing is once a smoker contaminates the air with their smoke I have to smell it and breathe in it. I have many times gone to a house party where smokers are and have to go home and quickly take a shower and get their smoke smell out of my hair. Put my clothing in a closed plastic bag and wash it. I don't mean to be judgemental on purpose.

Like you say ... they aren't hiding anything .... that smell lingers for some time, even outside.
When out walking around my apt. buildings in the early morning, I don't see any smokers, but I know when they are nearby.

There is a reason why people spend their money to rent a smoke free apartment so I do not blame people for being upset. I am not judging the smoker for continuing to smoke but I am judging the smoker for not having the curtsey to go off property to have his cigarette.

I am an ex smoker so I know about that need for a "fix" but I also never smoked in places that prohibited it.

I am not sensitive to the smell of cigarettes but now that pot is legal I have found that I am sensitive to that smell and can detect the smell on those who may have just had some. Funny because decades ago I used to enjoy the aroma of pot.

Ex smokers ARE the most intolerant of smokers. My husband smoked for 2/3rds of the time I’ve been with him which is 34 years.

He has zero tolerance for smokers around him . He seems to think that now that he’s finally quit that he’s suddenly entitled to a smoke free world.

I just laugh at him.

I remember that. My family always had ceramic cigarette boxes on the coffee tables with lots of ashtrays for guests to smoke if they wanted. I grew up with people who felt this way about smoking and smokers. Smokers don't bother me at all. It's just a life choice. That's it.

Smokers have become super sensitive to the dislike of non-smokers over their habit! That's why they are being furtive. I don't see anything wrong with someone smoking outside a non-smoking building, either. They are sensitive to the tenants and owners by not stinking up an apartment. I was a two packs a day smoker and still feel the judgment of the non-smoking crowd keenly after all those years.

Good Lord, if someone in an apartment above, or a passer-by, should get a whiff ... panic ... disaster ... someone just subjected me to that foul stench!

I haven't smoked in 23 years and don't intend to go back to it. Just brings out my urge to fend for the underdog!

It is interesting how things have changed. When I was younger lots of people smoked and we just accepted it. I never remember being bothered by the smoke back then. Now that smoking is much less common I guess I am no longer used to smelling it, so when I do I don't like it. I have never smoked cigarettes.

Businesses and people have the right to set no smoking policy on their own property, I have no problem with that. In sufficient quantity second hand smoke can be harmful to the non-smokers health. I think people deserve reasonable protection from this. On the other hand the smell is not harmful, but can be obnoxious. I think the government probably should regulate involuntary exposure to second hand smoke, but not to the smell.

A few years back I was doing some work in Fairbanks. I remember the folks in artic gear standing just outside the doors of no smoking places... smoking away. At -40F that took some commitment. They were a little obnoxious when you had to enter and exit the building, but that exposure was short.

I still love the smell of a good cigarette to this day! What I don't like, and didn't, even as a smoker was stale smoke. That's the ash can smell so many are complaining about. Yes, it can linger in your clothes as well, and that isn't pleasant! But people complaining because somebody is smoking ten feet away, that's just plain narrow intolerance! C'mon folks, a whiff of fresh smoke isn't that unpleasant! Learn to put up with a life style that happens to be different from yours. It's not that hard, all it requires is a bit of tolerance for that which isn't you!

This funny thing this person has zero problem smoking pot in their apt. If you go into an area where they've been in the last half hour or so it stinks of pot. It's like wush if they open their door and your near it. I guess the smoking outside helps in their mind breaking the rules on smoking pot inside. Pot smokers seem to get breaks like they are protect class or something. I know big apartment complexes that don't want smoking on the property period.

But that's the thing if a younger person in particular is smoking cigarettes in this day and age good chance they are doing other drugs. Some studies this century show cigarette smokers or vapors are big stimulant users. It's the other drugs that could become the bigger issue for the smoker and tenants.

Are you saying that cigarettes and vapors are gateway drugs? Leading to the use of more dangerous ones? They said that about Cannabis, too!

With the young crowd absolutely. With all the knowledge at this point the person who smokes cigarettes not only has a desire for gratification through chemicals but do it in a known risky manner. Which means they'll probably have no problem doing other risky chemicals and/or take the risk with illegal chemicals.

What are you doing to the enjoyment of life, WIT? Isn't a big plate of pasta gratification which might lead to obesity? Enjoyment of alcohol? Potentially addictive! Every pleasure leads to potential shortening of life, but would we want life without it?

This apartment building is non smoking. I think it still is since it sold. Sometimes people smoke at the sidewalk by the street. I have had people smoke in the apartment below me or some smoke on their deck. You are not supposed to smoke anywhere on the property.

The issue here is that the renter is being disrespectful for smoking in a no smoking building.
I am currently staying in a non smoking holiday apartment. I ventured out onto the balcony only to be assailed with the foul stench of cigarette smoke from the adjoining apartment. I had to go back inside as cigarette smoke is nauseating to non smokers.

I completely agree with everything but the sidewalk, Remy!
