What are some alternative lifestyles you could imagine that might suit you?

Well, I did live for years in log cabins where I had to haul water, had to cut logs for a large barrel for heat.
I'm pretty adaptable to most anything because I consider this whole life as just "camping out".
This entire life is an adventure so, anything goes!
Wow, pioneer woman in the house. Admirable. But I notice you didn't make a choice, if you had to choose one now.

My aunt and uncle had a home in NC but they spent most of their time hauling a camper around the US. They visited so many states. I always admired them for that. My relatives were from the hills in NC and never went anywhere, so my aunt and uncle always seemed so worldly to me.

I've often thought about a cabin or home out in the woods where the scenery is beautiful and I could hike everyday, but then I come back to the reality that I would miss concerts, plays, movies grocery stores, the gym, etc. I need all the modern conveniences in everyday life.

I've slept in a tee-pee.
Turned down sailing around the world.
Almost bought a geo-dome once.
Islands don't attract me much. Lived in Sitka. That was an island.
Houseboat on a lake would be infested with flying insects.
Need freedom to go anywhere at the drop of a hat!

A choice? Probably a tree-house! That sounds like fun!

Yeah, Swiss Family Robinson style.

Having lived off the grid, it’s not quite as romantic as shown on Hallmark channel.

For me the alternative lifestyle would be living in an apartment on the 48th floor for a high rise. It makes me dizzy and claustrophobic thinking about it.
LOL... and me... that's the very opposite of what I have too.. altho' if it was a luxury penthouse, I might try it for a little while, and just not look down..:D

I lived on a 80 foot houseboat on a lake for several years. I wouldn't mind doing it again, but getting to advanced years, probably not a good option. It requires a lot of walking up and down the docks and maintenance would be a problem. But it sure was fun!

And, sorry to disagree with you, @Gaer , bugs were never a problem. I have more bugs and mosquitos in my back yard now than I did at the boat. The biggest problems we had were with the cranes. They like to visit the boats and leave their "calling cards" on the decks! Yuck.

In a perfect world (sigh), where I didn't have illness, disability and chronic pain and money wasn't an issue (sigh), a little cottage in the country with a beautiful flower garden out front and fruit/vegetable kitchen garden out back because without illness I could actually eat delicious fiber again. I love gardens. Blame my farmer's daughter mother. Two cats in the yard that I'd look at and think in amusement, life used to be so hard.

I've also always had a bit of wanderlust in me but neverhad the health or fortune to give into it. So maybe that, traveling summers with the country cottage to return to hunker down in for the winter. Snow is so beautiful to watch falling when you don't have to go out in it. Spring and fall would want to be home too to watch the leaves turning and the buds blooming. Guess I'd have to hire a gardener for the summer.
