What are some alternative lifestyles you could imagine that might suit you?

I still would like some modern conveniences, but it would have to be a cabin further out in the country in a wooded area surrounded by farm fields with the neighbors spread out a bit more.

Not much of a fan of traveling to far anymore. I'm getting to the point of doing more stay-cations, day trips or just a few days away.

Now having hired help to do things would suit me just fine too, @Knight.

I lived on a 80 foot houseboat on a lake for several years. I wouldn't mind doing it again, but getting to advanced years, probably not a good option. It requires a lot of walking up and down the docks and maintenance would be a problem. But it sure was fun!

And, sorry to disagree with you, @Gaer , bugs were never a problem. I have more bugs and mosquitos in my back yard now than I did at the boat. The biggest problems we had were with the cranes. They like to visit the boats and leave their "calling cards" on the decks! Yuck.

Wow ... an 80 footer. That's a big boy. Wouldn't want to tow that more than once. Looks like a blast though.

I've slept in a tee-pee.
Turned down sailing around the world.
Almost bought a geo-dome once.
Islands don't attract me much. Lived in Sitka. That was an island.
Houseboat on a lake would be infested with flying insects.
Need freedom to go anywhere at the drop of a hat!

A choice? Probably a tree-house! That sounds like fun!
You reminded me of a Thanksgiving dinner here at home a few years ago. There was a dear friend of mind who brought a friend of hers' with her. First time I'd met her or she had been out to our home. Now we have 12 acres and a large house with lots of things in it of course. Hey, we've lived here for 38 years! She seemed nervous but settled down and over dessert confided that she had a thing about owning anything more than she could pack into her car.

I ask her how she lived then as I knew she had a high paid job at Shell and she told me she rented apartments with short leases (presume she rented furniture) and when Shell wanted to transfer her she was usually always willing to go. Being in our house with all the "stuff" probably drove her bananas...lol.

An old warehouse! Exposed brickwork. Large, light, multi-purpose spaces, big windows and an industrial/canteen style kitchen which preferably would look out over a river or ocean. Giant sofas and beds with lots of cushions, textiles and colour. A roof top garden and a gym! Plenty of room to live, dream and be happy :)

Living in:

Houseboat on a lake
RV, conversion van, or bus
Cabin cruiser along the coast
Yurt
Tree house
Log cabin off grid
Geo Dome
Earth shelter
Motorcycle Nomad
Bomb Shelter
Floating Island
Tee Pee
????????
Reality cannot be ignored in this ever-increasing complex world. Everything we do now has attachments, obligations, and costs money. It is easy to dream about these alternative living situations, but to actually live in them is another matter. So my answer would be - take a vacation cruise (although visions of the sinking Titanic keep interfering in this dream, lol).

Here's my desired setup as soon as house sells. An aluminum shell I can customize any way I want on a new RAM truck. I can camp in it at campgrounds or almost anywhere, stay in an Air B&B or a motel whenever I want, stay with friends or family, or pull a small travel trailer if I need more space. At least it's my plan for now.

I kind of miss the days when I slept on an air mattress
The living room furniture was rattan
And kitchen utensils were service for 1 with one for backup
Could pack and move in under 30 minutes by my efforts alone
And only one trip

After 17yrs here, the longest I've ever lived anywhere, I have too much stuff
And keep daydreaming of getting rid of most of it ... then what?

As I've said before: If you want to have an adventurous life, you have to do adventurous things (That's assuming you can, which isn't always the case).

Well, @bobcat48, this is an interesting concept, especially if there are no commitments or family to tie you down. You are free to come and go, and experience the world at your own pace. At my age, I would get claustrophobic and stressed without the comforts of home. Are you planning to do this for a short time or long term?

I remember seeing a lot of these campers about 25 years ago & then they seemed to go away. This summer I think I've seen about 4 or 5 which seems a lot now compared to back then. All of them were brand new.

A specialized transport company is needed to tow a houseboat. The upper deck bridge needs to be disassembled, any canopies taken down, tanks emptied, etc. Hydraulic trailer is required. It's not something that's cheap to do.

But, yes, it was a really fun time in our lives and definitely a different lifestyle!

Yep, I would like to legally have more than one wife, and of course one would be my current wife! I would let them choose our home(s) and where we live, as I have my current wife. Of course, this is just a dream, my current wife would not go along with it, and I would not give her up for anything...

Private jet
Yacht
Vacation Home

All of the above will be stocked with the finest champagne, seafood, organic food including fruits and veggies and of course a private chef. Just thinking about it, puts a big smile on my face. I may not ever own these things, but at some point in my life, I will enjoy the experience. I'm speaking it into existence. :D

No commitments or ties. It is mostly meant to be totally flexible and adaptable. If I want to camp in it at a campground, it really won't be any different than sleeping in a tent, except I won't be on the ground. The only time I will actually be inside is if I am sleeping, or maybe reading. Other than that I will be outside (Cooking, lounging, walking, going out to dinner, etc...).

If I want to rent a cabin by a lake, or a B&B, or a motel, I can do that whenever the mood strikes. Other than that, just do a little traveling. If I decide to stop doing it, I can always buy a small place somewhere with low maintenance. So the plan is just open-ended, and if it doesn't work out, I just go to plan B (Whatever that is).

@bobcat48, I’d suggest something like one of these. They’re lighter than a home built version. A friend had one. It was good for 2, not enough for his family of 4 for camping.

Thanks. I have looked into pop tops and I think they would be good for some, but not me. First of all, they run between 25 to 50 grand, and they are not set up the way I want anyway. All of them are set up to sleep over the cab, and I don't want that hassle. Plus they have a lot of integrated systems that are just more stuff to go wrong. I like simplicity and customized to what suits me.

Generally I'm not a picky person, but I guess I am with some things. When I built my house, I probably looked at over 5000 house plans, and couldn't find one that suited me, so I designed my own, and no regrets.
Thanks for the lead though.

RV, conversion van, or bus
Cabin cruiser along the coast
You come up with some great questions, @bobcat48 ! From your list, I'd choose the RV because my lifelong dream has been to go coast to coast in one... stopping at Mom & Pop's for meals, and getting a feel for the local flare in every state I pass through. When I want to rest from that for a while, I'd have a cabin cruiser waiting at my favorite coastal paradise. 🛥️🌴

I worked with a guy who lived out of an RV at one time in his life. He would take contract jobs in various places across the country and find an RV place nearby where he could park it and use it as his home for the duration of the contract.

That sounds good to me.
I just recently read the book Nomadland, and to my surprise there are a tremendous number of individuals who do just that. They travel to wherever there is work, they camp nearby, and when the job is done, they just move on to the next seasonal employment. They feel a sense of freedom that they have no desire to give up, and some just go where the weather suits them. They often gather together like one big family at different times. It was an interesting book.

There are also lots of travel groups that meetup at selected locations.

There you go. There is so much to see and do out there. Might as well do it while you can.
Wow a cabin cruiser and an RV. I think I might be worried that some squatter would be using when I wasn't (Ha ha).

Oh geez. A teepee? I'm afraid I'm not that rugged. My idea of camping is staying at The Radisson. 😊

I like the idea of a houseboat on a lake, but as caroln said in reality it requires a lot of maintenance. I love road trips, so the RV or bus could be fun for a while if it was comfy, but again, it requires a lot of maintenance. In my golden years, I want less work not more.

A bungalow on the beach is about as "alternative" as I get.🌴

This one's pretty simple. I could live here temporarily.

This is more my speed. Time, unlimited. I could live here permanently.
