What would it take to change your beliefs?

Belief in what? What is the actual subject of belief since such isn't stated?

I believe the sun comes up each day and is followed by night. If someone claims the sun won't come up tomorrow, I won't believe what they said will occur regardless of any questions I might ask or not because I already understand due to my own education, their claim won't happen.

On the other hand if they claim the sun will come up tomorrow, I will believe their claim as I already know such to be true. If instead they claim, I might not actually see the sun as it comes up because a stormy cloudy period is forecast and they then provide reputable weather forecast information, I might begin to believe their claim as relatively probable.

Well, the WISE are USUALLY pretty easily distinguishable from the artless beef-witted barnacle, the cockered clack-dish clotpole, the churlish clapper-clawed coxcomb, the fobbing flap-mouthed foot-licker, the spur-galled sheep-biting scut, the wayward weather-bitten wagtail, the clouted clay-brained clack-dish, the droning doghearted dewberry, and the impertinent ill-nurtured inchworm ... which are more commonly encountered.

I will believe what I have learned to be right. I try to stay interested and sharp and to continue learning.

I will not believe just because someone says I should.

I pose the question to hear how open minded the inhabitants here are to alternate ideas. Interesting replies - thank you.

For a twist, you are the wise person of which I speak. If you think you know all the answers you will never be open to other possibilites and are thus the poorer for it.

Is there a certain WV you think is definitely among those most in need of answers from a wise person? If so is there anything anyone whose intelligence you discount might say that would make you rethink your boastful, condescending remarks? I ask to see how open minded the asker is.

I don’t think I have all the answers but I’m content with those it has been given to me to know. I don’t promote my answers or even offer them. No one should be a lackey to another. Everyone must find their way.

To change one's beliefs, a person who tells you something isn´t enough. Whether it is the truth or not.
The easiest way to change the beliefs of another person is to change the circumstances from which this beliefs arises.
A conversation can make you think, but when you return to your usual environment, these thoughts will quickly dissolve.
Besides, there is a difference between believing something and acting on it.

The Three Stooges taught me in childhood about wise guys, and what to do about them. You respond, “Oh, a WISE GUY, eh?,” and then there seemed to be eye-poking, face-slapping, hair-pulling, and head-bopping involved. Moe could take on at least two wise guys at a time, and he never seemed to be arrested for assault and battery… 😸

True. Paradoxically, it takes some wisdom to appreciate and grasp wisdom. Music is of little value if the audience is deaf.

I would be inclined to believe not for his words but for concrete results. There are too many "experts" who really only know as much as the rest of us except they sales pitch it well.

Words are worthless. Let's see results. :giggle:

No specific WV or secret agenda here, just thinking out loud and I enjoy hearing others opinions on the subject.
My intent wasn't to exasperate you, I'm sorry you found my remark boastful and condescending - please feel free to discount it if it doesn't fit into your WV. 🤗

Damn, my plan was foiled again! I shall have to find another way to increase my stable of lackeys. :devilish: (said in jest, to lighten the mood.)

Words are cheap, but they can also start a war.

I was curious about that. This question is almost exclusively asked by the faithful who can't understand anosticism, and when an answer is given it's usually ignored, so it can be tiresome to respond. In my experience, people without that agenda, don't even bother to ask the question, because it's kind of a "who cares?" issue.

The question started bouncing around my head more often with all the social media that is circumventing the globe (I'm not saying that anyone is necessarily spouting wisdom). It seems like the opinions shared on SM have become more polarizing than unifying and I wondered what it would take to change the tide. History has shown we are lacking in unification skills, in almost all areas of life, so perhaps it is a mote point and a senseless discussion.

A simple answer is NO!

No woman or man, regardless of how smart they may be, can answer all questions. That is because many of those questions can only be answered by God, if there is a God.

First question...is there a God?

Yes it is but that's all there are now pretty much. It all just depends on which "cult" you belong to. I miss independent thought.
Seems to be becoming something of the past.
