In June of 1875 the streets of Dublin were flooded with flaming whiskey after a fire started at a distillery store-house on Ardee Street. Soon after, residents flooded the streets with cups, cans and pots, and even dipped their own boots into the river of flaming whiskey for a drink. Most of the resulting 13 deaths are said to have been caused by alcohol poisoning....a few dips too many.
In October 1814, the London Beer Flood started when a massive 22 ft (6.7 m) tall wooden storage vessel burst. An unstoppable wave of porter destroyed the back wall of the Horse Shoe Brewery, and swept into a slum area known as the St Giles rookery. Eight people were killed.
The most sobering news was that 5 of the 8 were drowned because they were unable to escape the basement where they were holding a wake for a two-year-old boy who had died the previous day.
