Two million litres of red wine flood streets of Portuguese village

Weird one this. France had budgeted 200m for the destruction of wine in order to support an over-saturated industry. In most countries today the number of wine drinkers is falling. Anyone in Europe remember, back in ye olde days, the butter mountains? Oh did we laugh......

In June of 1875 the streets of Dublin were flooded with flaming whiskey after a fire started at a distillery store-house on Ardee Street. Soon after, residents flooded the streets with cups, cans and pots, and even dipped their own boots into the river of flaming whiskey for a drink. Most of the resulting 13 deaths are said to have been caused by alcohol poisoning....a few dips too many.

In October 1814, the London Beer Flood started when a massive 22 ft (6.7 m) tall wooden storage vessel burst. An unstoppable wave of porter destroyed the back wall of the Horse Shoe Brewery, and swept into a slum area known as the St Giles rookery. Eight people were killed.

The most sobering news was that 5 of the 8 were drowned because they were unable to escape the basement where they were holding a wake for a two-year-old boy who had died the previous day.

I blame Dean Martin, (Dino Crocetti) his prayer for rain, "So the grapes can grow and they can make more wine," was intended for California, but that Latin background of his just extended to The Mediterranean.
