My PC Crashed & Died. RIP

I will make do with my I Pad until my new 17" Laptop arrives on Thursday. I will no longer need a PC and it will be nice to have the additional space that the PC & Monitor took up.

I recently bought an "All-in One" PC. Very compact; NO tower. Everything is built into the monitor; just a separate keyboard and a mouse.
I use my lap top for when I travel.

Why do you need anything but an iPad unless you have special need Some?

There are things that desktops excel at that notebooks and iPads still cannot equal ...

  1. Extreme gamers prefer desktops for their ability to cram more graphics and computing power into their systems
  2. Desktops still run cooler than laptops (don't know about iPads) and can be fitted with liquid cooling systems to further cool them down
  3. Desktops are easier for DIY's to modify
  4. Equivalent computing power is still cheaper in desktops (although by a slim margin)
  5. You can easily upgrade your monitor size with a desktop

Fortunately, my iPad satisfies all of my needs. My desktop sits gathering dust in a corner...

What brand is the "all in one"?

My tablet crashed, I may look into one..

I will always keep a desk top..

I use my iPad for just about everything that I want to do online. I have an external keyboard case for the iPad, and that makes it just about like using a small laptop, with the added benefit that it is also a touch screen, so I can stretch anything that is not large enough for me to see easily.

I also have an all-in-one for anything that needs a regular computer.
It is a Dell XPS-18, and it sits on a pedestal and functions exactly like a desktop would. However, even though it is large, you can carry it around like you would do with a laptop, and it has its own little "flipper" legs so it can stand up without the pedestal base.
The keyboard and mouse don't have to connect , and you can also use it without those if you want to. It has the touch screen just like an iPad; but you can either use the touchscreen or the mouse. I usually use a combination of both. It is kind of like having a giant iPad, when you use it as a tablet. Awesome for watching movies !

Then, I also have a Kindle Fire HD that I use exclusively for reading books. It is about the size of an iPad Mini, and easily fits in my purse if I am going somewhere that I know I have to sit and wait and will want to read. At first, I did my reading on the iPad; but after I added the keyboard case, then it weighed more ; so I shopped around on eBay and got the Kindle.

Sifu, if your roomie gets a Kindle Fire, then you could have your laptop back. I got mine on ebay for $50, and it works great.

Great suggestion; unfortunately she also has poor vision, so anything smaller than a 17" screen is pretty much useless for her.

She'll just have to wait until I make my 25.6 GHz / liquid helium-cooled / 72" screen desktop. Then she can have my laptop.

I did like my 10" tablet that I could connect to the TV screen with a USB cable!! 00thumbupNEW (Custom).jpg

Ken, My all-in-one is a Dell. There may be other brands. The biggest advantage is that there is NO clumsy tower that takes up a lot
of space....even if you put it under your desk.

I have a HP All-In-One. Does not get hot like a laptop. Disappointingly though, it does not have a HDMI slot. So, my son just got me a Chromecast, that I plug into my tv. I can mirror my pc screen or watch Netflix, while still using my pc. It is wireless. Like it better, than that long hdmi cable I had to use with my laptop.

Sifu, for $39, you can get an Amazon Fire stick, and it will plug right into your tv. Then if you have the Kindle Fire Tablet, she can use the tv as a monitor, plus you can watch internet movies from Crackle, Youtube, and Netflix on the TV, if you have a subscription for it. Netflix is only $8 a month, so you just can't watch movies any cheaper than that.
The Kindle is perfect for when you want to go online away from home and do not want to lug your laptop along, plus there are zillions of books that you can get for free, or very cheap, and read on the Kindle. Since you can choose the font size, you can always have print large enough to read.
Plus,, Amazon gives away a free app (usually a game) every day; so she could accumulate lots of games on the Kindle and play them over the TV.

For under $100 you too could have all of this (just pay shipping and handling), assuming that you get the Kindle for $50 on eBay.

Excellent - thanks for the rundown! I haven't kept up with all this tech ...

Thank you for this info, Flower Lady. The mini slot on my Kindle no longer functions. So I am unable to use a mini hdmi to mirror to my tv. Does the Fire Stick mirror the screen you have on your Kindle also? For instance, emails or web pages?

This computer stuff confuses me so much. How is an Ipad different from a lap top? I like to shop online. Can you shop with a Ipad. And what about virus protection? Any helpful advice would be appreciated. I need a new something. This old clunk laptop likes to freeze on me and my new laptop died in just over a year.

Now, there is a good question, and I am pretty sure that the answer would be yes, assuming that the issue with your Kindle is actually right in the small charging slot.
I have an Apple TV, and I can "throw" anything on my ipad screen onto the Apple TV. When you have the Kindle Fire stick, it should operate the same exact way as the Apple TV and the ipad do.
I do not have a Fire TV or Fire stick; because I use the Apple TV; but from what I have read, you can just mirror anything that is on your tablet screen onto the TV screen just like i do with my Apple one, which calles it "airplay" instead of mirroring.
If you look at the description of the Fire stick on Amazon, it will tell you that it does mirror from a phone or tablet onto the TV screen.

An iPad is not a complete computer and won't do everything that your laptop does; but it has an app for almost everything that you want to do with it, and you can also do many things that you cannot do with a regular computer. The iPad, and most other tablets have a touchcreen, so you do not use a mouse, just your fingers.
One really nice thing is that you can "stretch the screen (which is like zooming in) and make what is on the screen larger.
So, if you want to see a small part of a picture, for example, you just stretch the screen and zoom into the part you want to see. Reading something with small print ? ----just stretch the screen until it is readable.
There is almost never any virus problems, and I do not have any kind of virus protection with the ipad.

The basic tablet has an onscreen virtual keyboard, like some phones have for texting. If you aren't doing a lot of typing, it is fine; but if you write a lot, then it is worth investing in a bluetooth keyboard for the ipad. Mine is a keyboard case, so it also closes up and protects the ipad. With the keyboard, you still use your finger as a mouse, but you type on the regular keyboard instead of the virtual one.
You can also use it when you are traveling someplace with no wi-fi connection if you get one that has both wifi and 4G LTE connectivity. Mine also has a "hotspot"; so if I am somewhere and using my 4G connection, I can also connect somone elses computer to online using my hotspot.
There are SO many benefits, and so few drawbacks, I can't even think of a reason why I wouold have a laptop (or a desktop) instead of the iPad.
And yes, you can shop, pay bills, do about anything online that you can with the laptop, and (again) even easier, with the ipad apps for almost any major shopping website.

Here is a picture of my iPad with its keyboard case, and you can see that it makes it almost like having a laptop to use; but with many more functions for everyday use.
