What are you doing today 2023

A present 38 F with an expected low of 34F tonight. I feel great and thankful that the cancer is taking its good old time. I honestly thought, back in April that I would be gone by now! It's my own fault! I never asked the surgeon: How long do I have? Just assumed: cancer=rapid demise when not treated. So it's a great day, not a sign of illness. The day will come, but doesn't it for all of us?

Let me ask a completely silly and unrelated question. I watched a video on YouTube yesterday that compared things that Canadians used and Americans didn't! The host mentioned kettles. He maintains that no one uses kettles in America, since they don't drink tea! LOL That all water for coffee etc. is heated in a pot or microwave! That couldn't possibly be true, could it? A kettle is a must for me, for my tea, instant coffee, cuppa soup etc. and I have yet to heat water in the Microwave oven. Is he right, my American friends?

If I lived in town or the city, I could get fibre broadband, however there are a lot of small, scattered communities that are simply being ignored.
I don't need (as some people seem to) a trillion megabytes a nanosecond in order to vegetate playing "Brain Rot" with every sentient being in the universe. A good enough speed to read my email and order a case or two of wine is usually fine.

If the powers that be want to change my landline, they will have to get off their arses and provide fibre broadband and reliable mains electricity to all communities, big or small.

well...that's made me think on the subject of moving house. Everhwere I've looked at thus far even tiny villages all proclaim to have Superfast Fibre Broadband... hmmmm... I wonder if this si true..

I would not like to be without mine.. altho' tbf my broadband has always been pretty fast anyway pre Fibre Optic...

I live in California and use en electric kettle daily for hot water for tea, coffee etc. I think it is pretty common. At work, I had no choice but to use a microwave for hot water since they did not allow an electric kettle. They claimed it was a fire hazard. Perhaps this is also common and where the rumor started that we don’t use electric kettles.

Thanks, Sadie. That's what I thought. It's not the first time the "host" of that particular channel is wrong when comparing Canada vs. U.S.A. He is American, by the way! I don't understand the concern re. fire hazard. My electric kettle shuts off the moment the water boils. It's not like the good old days when you were in trouble if you forgot you had water boiling.

Visited my father-in-law at his assisted living complex. Accompanied him to the common area and listened to a singer perform some songs from the past, it was quite enjoyable. Arrived home and then took my wife to lunch. Having a cup of tea now and will read by a fire later this evening with a glass of wine.

I have never in my life heard of an electric kettle bursting into flames

I'm so glad to hear that the cancer is behaving! May that be true for a very long time. Wonderful news. Now Salty, take it from ol' Kate... don't believe everything (or most things!) you hear on the Internet. We really *do* drink tea here 🤭 and yes, we know what a kettle is and even own them. hehe @Old Salt

@hollydolly Could it be that the indicator light just blew a fuse? That's an easy fix, and YouTube can help. Without YouTube and Google, my life would be over⚰️

I'm home. It's cold. It's overcast. But there's no wind. Yay for that.

I don't feel like doing anything. So I won't.

ETA: I keyed this in hours ago but didn't hit post. Duh.

Anyway, since I didn't feel like doing anything, I didn't.

No it's not the fuse..annoyingly I had the same side front bulb replaced just a few days ago, and I had a heck of a run-around trying to find someone who would do it..ended up in the next county.. I wish I;d got them to replace the rear one as well..so this time I'm just going to book the car in to have the exhaust fixed, and get them to put the bulb in at the same time..

Y'all remember that I've referred to Whatsisname, the Father of My Children. The brother of the current Mrs. Whatsisname just called to tell me that Whatsisname died a few minutes ago. She's too upset to talk. I understand. Sad for my kids, sad for me.

I made peace with him and her, too, 50 years ago. DS had a sort of relationship with him. DD still carried a grudge about his leaving (Bitter? Bitter, party of one????). Neither of them ever liked the current Mrs. W. It probably had a lot to do with her referring to them by their "baby" nicknames given them by Mr. W and me and the fact that she's a leftover hippie and hasn't moved on from the early 1970s.

DD did say that "at least he doesn't have to languish in misery any longer." His dementia was so far advanced that he probably had no idea he was languishing in misery. He was 88.

The host's name is Tyler Bucket and he can be incredibly ignorant. Not in a hateful way, he just doesn't know very much but proclaims all those cultural Canada-U.S. differences with youthful certainty on an almost daily basis. I've caught him in many contradictions before, but watch his videos for their entertainment value! But he was so certain: "I have never seen anyone use a kettle in America because we don't drink tea!" This sounded farcical and I couldn't believe it, but had to know for sure! LOL

Sigh!!! I wish I could join you for some wine and a fire! I am on six different medications at the moment and two of them proclaim: NO ALCOHOL! More sighs!!!! I have two tins of beer in the fridge. They've been sitting there for a while. If there's a pharmacist in the house, would you please tell me a glass of wine or beer is okay now and then! 😭

have you googled those meds to see if you can have the occasional drink ?

Three cheers for @hollydolly! There's only one medication now that warns me against alcohol use and I just googled it. Here's what it says:

"People with diabetes should limit alcohol (no more than one drink per day for women and two for men) and consume it with food. If you take metformin, you may want to avoid alcohol entirely because of the added risks."

May want to avoid doesn't mean must avoid, does it? I'll cautiously have a beer with supper (dinner) tomorrow! Or am I being reckless? OS still being a bit nervous while trying to live life to the hilt!

Did some accounting today. I checked my card balances, filled in the projection for January expenses on my spreadsheet and had to check out some things in three of my bank/credit union accounts. I got a nice surprise. I got a huge reimbursement from my granddaughter's university. It was for part of her tuition. I made the last in a series of payments for the semester this month. She usually sends me her final bill showing her scholarship and student loan amounts so I get an idea of what (if anything) is to be refunded but she didn't do that this time.

I had to get creative to store the new TP bundle from Costco. They only had their new softer version that comes in "fatter" packaging. Good thing I saved the old package. I put two packs in that and worked my magic in the storage closet to fit the rest. With my son's help, I rearranged some heavy items. Afterward we had a nice chat. Just as he was going to bed, we had to rescue our cat who had knocked my jacket on the floor and somehow got stuck inside one of the sleeves! Her cries and whimpering woke me out of my dozing. I don't know if I could have gotten her out without his help. 😱

Yes...I'm shameful. I make my tea in the microwave. I add the teabag to the water as it's heating then let it sit for a couple of minutes. Works for me. I got rid of the kettles I used to have because the way they were made, they were hard to clean. Now there are different designs where that's not the case, but now I don't have room for another thing in my tiny kitchenette.

I'm glad your cancer hasn't progressed and glad to see you posting. Seems you were MIA for a while, or maybe I just wasn't seeing your posts.
