What are you doing today 2023

Have sweet little 2 year old grandson today and will have him again for an overnight from Sat to Sun. (DS & DDIL have been invited to a party that's not really kid-friendly.)

Need to do MORE shopping today, but only a little. Need some Beyond Meat brats for the non-meat eaters (DH & me included) for Christmas Eve dinner and a few red & yellow bell peppers.

It monsooned yesterday. About 3 inches fell here; the water level in our pool tells the tale. When we left the house to go shopping, it wasn't raining, but by the time we left store #1 it was (to quote @hollydolly), lashing down! Of course we didn't have any rain gear with us. Wound up putting our shopping cart cover over the baby to get him to the car relatively unscathed, but DH & I were drenched. Same thing happened when we left store #2.

Oh well, it's only water, right? LOL

p.s. Rain is supposed to be mostly gone today but we'll bring raingear with us just in case. Fool me once...

Thanks for listening. I feel better already. Yes, it's been That kind of morning.

Walking at sunrise in our garden after an inch of rain last night: a hawk is soaking up the first warm sun rays; a Canna leaf with rain drops; the creek is part rain water and part run-off from a spring three properties upstream; Elephant Ears grow berserk; the first warm sun rays in the morning are creating steam.

A hard morning at the "office" because...everybody in the world decided to shop this morning. It was nice to be there before the store even opened, though. I got a lot done before the thundering herds stormed the doors. Nine loaves of Italian bread gone in a flash with five more waiting to cool before I could package them. And of course, there had to be a customer insisting she wanted Italian bread even if it wasn't cool enough yet. So I packaged it and handed it over, warning her that there would be condensation in the bag, making it soggy by the time she got home. Oh, well, her problem.

All those same people will be back tomorrow morning for everything they forgot . Sunday morning, Christmas Eve, should be interesting.

Almost had a Christmas disaster. DS/DSIL's car died. As in they think it's beyond help died! At 200,000 miles, no surprise. I was so upset that they weren't going to come for lunch today and even cried😭. Inspiration hit, and I told them I'd pay for Uber. It's gonna cost big bucks💸💸because it's so far from there to here and back again, but I don't care. I wanna see them and give them fun Christmas presents to play with.

It'll probably be too late for lunch so I have to figure out a way to send lunch home with them, but they'll be here this afternoon. Yippee.

@hollydolly I know how you feel about the Christmas decorations. All I have out is the little ceramic Christmas tree. It feels like too much.

Nothing was planned, however, I woke up and the cable remote was dead. I went to the battery drawer, had everything but double AA. Got dressed, went to the neighborhood Walmart to get some, also grabbed another carton of half and half.

Came home, put the pjs back on and put the new batteries in. Just goes to show, even if we have prepped, think we have everything we need, there is always something. I thought it would be packed but it was just a normal day there. I was in and out in less than five minutes.

I am going to unbox the new air fryer, my gift to me, to use tonight.
I am going to try to make chicken and veggie shishkabobs for dinner in it.
The chicken is cubed and marinated, hope it turns out as I have never tried it in an air fryer.

Well it's still verrry windy here.. but thankfully no rain..

I've got the laundry done.. the first load is in the dryer now..

This is probably going to sound mad, but I looked at the Christmas ornaments in the livingroom.. and thought, what's the point of this, no-one is coming here over Christmas.. so I took them all down.. and packed them away. I'm really not in the mood for it tbh...

The only thing left up is the Wreath on the front door..

I vac'd out the car.. and put back my storage box which holds various items like oil and water and tyre inflator etc..

..it's just after 2pm... the kids are all off school now until January 4th.. , and the road is very quiet because most people have gone shopping or away on a trip...

Still not taken any painkillers for my knees.. I don't want to mask the pain, until I see if it's going to last more than the 48 hours they suggested it might..
@hollydolly I can completely relate to what you're saying about taking down Christmas ornaments. I've had times like that in the past, too. Sending you hugs from across the pond ❣️

OMG! Just pulled up my schedule for next week. 4am-10am. And I thought getting up at 3 was early.
@Georgiagranny, forgive me if you've answered this is prior posts but how do you get to work that early? It's a two part question, actually. Do you drive, take public transportation, use Uber or does someone take you? Also, how do you get up THAT early?

@Leann, @hollydolly, @Kaila DD takes me to work and picks me up. She doesn't complain about it, probably because she knows I need somewhere to go and something to do.

The job I had before I got this one started at 4am. It wasn't great getting up that early, but I got used to it. I guess DD did, too.

Lunch with DS/DSIL was fun. They were pleased with their Christmas presents. Because they thought they wouldn't be able to come, they had lunch at home. Oriental food. As we know, "It fills you up, but it doesn't stick with you." LOL

I'd already made our sliders, pasta salad and deviled eggs, and they said they'd sample some of each. They ate. Then they ate some more. And then just a little bit more :ROFLMAO:. I sent leftovers home with them and just emailed them the recipe for the sliders.

@Jules They did try to rent a car. It's Dec 22. There wasn't a car available anywhere. Nope. Nowhere in the area until after Christmas!

If I go out for lunch at a Chinese restaurant, I’m stuffed and just make a light supper. Last time, DH and I shared a combo plate for one and could barely finish it. DH has a big appetite and I do ok taking my share.

The stores are insane today. When I saw the lineups to pay, I just took what I had loaded up and got out as fast as possible. I can be there much earlier in the day so will do that for the few things I still need.

The other day DT, people were parking anywhere, even in the right hand turn lane. Seriously? We were two blocks further away and there were some empty spots.

Watching the wife wrap presents for what might be 'Everyone in our Time Zone...'
She's got the biggest smile on her face; she's a Master Wrapper.
I was asked to leave the room, not sure why, maybe she's wrapping something for me?
Standing in the hallway, coffee cup in hand, listening very, very hard for any clues.

Tough. You're just gonna have to wait and see🎅

@Trila
What type of magnet did you make for your mother, this year?

Gosh, @Georgiagranny
Your DD will drive you at that hour? Or perhaps you take some other transport, but what would even be available at that hour????o_O:unsure::oops:

I actually started this one for last Christmas, but decided that it was too complex to be finished in time. So I put it to the side, and made a different one instead.

Good thing I did that, since I broke my wrist last summer and couldn't sew as much as I would have needed to.

This one was extra hard because I didn't actually have a pattern for it....I was copying a picture from Pinterest.

I think I was getting board, working on the same one for so long. But now that it's done, I really like the way it turned out.

Talking of Chinese food not filling you up...and we all know it doesn't and we need to eat an hour later... what do the Chinese eat at home, which must fill them up ..I wonder ?
I can't speak directly to this, and I believe that in the cities an awful lot has changed over the past 3 decades.

But when I was a college freshman, I helped a Vietnamese guy with some lab work he was struggling with. We became study partners and sort of pals, and I think I helped him with improving his English. At a certain point he introduced me to his girlfriend, which seemed oddly formal. Later he invited me to a weekend home cooked dinner she was making.

I'm just a bumpkin. Just some American guy maybe 4th generation. I have no idea what to expect.

I arrive at an off-campus house with him, he leads me in, and it is crawling with people. Some sort of foreign exchange student house, all Asian. Not entirely Vietnamese. All talking like crazy. I'm the only white kid there. The rest are freshmen, upperclassmen, grad students, even a couple of young professors.

We were served quite a lot of things, I think the one being some kinds of brothy pork soup with fine white noodles and vegetables, which may have been Hủ Tiếu or something like it. It was met with great enthusiasm. But there were also many other items.

I don't think anyone was hungry an hour later.

What impressed me most was that when the meal was over nobody turned football on and vegged out. Instead the news was on TV and they all sat riveted, taking it in. Lots of conversation followed.

I thanked Hu and his girlfriend, then shook a lot of hands before leaving. It was all very warm and accepting, and I went away quite impressed.

I have no reason to expect other Asian peoples to be much different.

In actual fact ''Chinese'' here in restaurants and take-aways is just a generic term because mostly they're Vietnamese...

When I was a teen I worked in a Chinese restaurants front of house. I asked the Chinese chef, about the food..his English wasn't good and all he could tell me was that they didn't eat that type of restaurant or take-away food at home...
