Anyone had a ganglion cyst?

I noticed today I have a lump on the back of my hand near my wrist. I think it's a ganglion cyst, it is painful to press. Of course I'm worried it might be something really bad but it fits the description of a ganglion cyst.

I can't really see the doctor until after Christmas, but wondered what is best to do. What timing! I have to cook the Christmas dinner and all that on Monday as well as lots of preparation over the weekend.
So any advice welcome please if anyone has had this.

My sibling had a huge one behind her left knee, grew so big it had to be surgically remove. She couldn't bend her leg or walk on it.

My Papa had one he believed was, but it turned out to have been a boil or furuncle, not certain of spelling sorry. He had it between two fingers at the base. His too had to be surgically removed as it prevented the use of his hand.

Ganglion cyst - Wikipedia

Have it checked out, is the best course...

Just did some research... if that's what it is, it would be drained by a medical professional... don't try to drain it yourself. And don't take the advice they used to give in the olden says to "hit it with something heavy."

Also check into:
Carpal Boss
This type of growth isn’t a tumor, but rather an overgrowth of bone on the back of the hand. Carpal Bosses are similar to bone spurs and are often mistaken for ganglion cysts. The carpal boss is more firm and non-moveable, however.

Thanks. I wouldn't ever do something myself to it.
It's tender to touch.
I truly wonder what next will malfunction in my body! Lol!

Years Ago, I had one in the same location as yours. I first had it drained which was good for awhile. When it came back, I had surgery and have never had a problem since.

I had one surgically removed. Simple out-patient procedure. I've got another one on the other wrist that moves around all by itself. It doesn't bother me like the other one did so not bothering to have it removed.

I had one just barely out of my teens on my wrist... it was quite a size.. apparently nothing to worry about but unsightly. At the doctors, he asked me to put my hand on his desk, and then without any warning he hit it with a hardback book... it was gone and never came back... apparently they used to do it then...quick and not so painless..lol

A ganglion Cyst, is also called a "Bible Cyst", because
the doctor used to hit it with a Bible, just as I see, Holly
has told you.

I had one on the back of my hand some years ago and
the Doctor held my hand, with both of his, he put one
thumb on my cyst, put his other thumb on to of it, then
pressed hard with both, the cyst disappeared.

You can of course have it removed surgically.

Mike.

I'm sorry this happened to you, especially at such an inopportune time Rose. Hopefully your doctor will confirm that it is a cyst and nothing to be overly concerned about.

Thanks. It is worrying me but hopefully it will not grow much or affect me doing my daily tasks. I will see the doctor of course.

I had one at the base of my index finger on the palm side; it was painful.

I had an appointment to have it drained and then I had a piece of gardening equipment slam back on me, hitting the cyst.

End of cyst; never came back.
Ouch! It must have drained.

Never had one but .... I did whack one on the wrist of a co-worker years ago. @ his request ! It did go away immediately.

That said .... I support the 'see a doctor' advice.

I had one surgically removed from the top of my right hand. He did tell me that I could try hitting it with a heavy book .. did not try it. The anaesthetist kept checking whether I was okay, as I was deep into meditation all the way through it.

I had one when I was a kid, late teens early twenties. It did limit the mobility in my wrist somewhat and was a bit painful if I bent it too far. I was offered surgery but declined. It eventually went away on its own.

Thanks, useful. I am just taking it easy with my hand, let it rest more.

I wouldn't ever try to burst it as who knows what is in it that could spread inside into my blood. I am far too cowardly anyway!

I have one on my wrist right now. Seems to be the return of one I had 42 years ago. That one I had to have surgically removed as it was on my right hand and was causing pain in my ring and pinky finger. As a bookkeeper,it made working difficult.

The surgery was awful-but that was my fault. The Anesthesiologist came in before surgery to tell me what he would be doing. I had thought I would be awake and would just have a local, but no,he planned on putting me under. I had a fear of that and refused,so he said he could just do a nerve block and I could remain awake. Cool. I chose that option.

Not cool.To do a nerve block, they put a tourniquet up at my shoulder. It turned out that the cyst had "roots" that had wrapped around nerves (hence the pain I was having in my fingers) and what was supposed to be a 10 minute surgery ended up taking 45 minutes. The pain of that tourniquet was excrutiating. Doc ended up saying if he had any idea it was that extensive,he never would have let me have a nerve block.

I am just going to live with the ganglion this time lol.
