What Sort of People?

Perhaps we should shoot whoever did this, perhaps we should kill all the criminals whatever their crime. Seriously, it is most unfortunate that this occurred, theft, betrayal of trust. Etc. But we do not yet know the circumstances behind the crime, I will avert putting on my black cap until then. Canada rests.

awww it's such a shame that the trust has now gone due to some low life thief!!

We had a similar thing here, the nearest farm has had an honesty box at the end of it's mile long drive from the farmhouse where they leave chicken and Ducks eggs and home made honey, and you just take what you want and leave the money in the ''bolted down'' cash box...but recently I went to get some duck eggs and they had posted an angry sign, stating that Due to thieves, they no longer were able to provide the honesty box service ...it's so irritating that the majority of honest people suffer because of the minority of untrustworthy

It's not the end of the world. It's happened once, that's all.

Something like this happened at our church during one of our market days. One lady had money taken from her purse that was not well guarded. She was very upset but we had a whip round and collected enough to replace her loss. In other words, we shared her pain and didn't go all to pieces. We refuse to get all paranoid about something like this.

Couldn't the good people of Canning do something as a community to help the shopkeeper? Or is it a collective?

I was ripped off by a phone solicitor. Could you do a whip thing for me? A few hundred American would do...

Canna has a population of 26. They have one guest house so do get a few tourists. They have not had a crime there in decades (like my neighbourhood) and no one ever locks their doors. The shop is staffed by volunteers and is unlocked all the time. Fisherman like to go in at night and use the wifi or purchase things. They write down what they took and put the money in an 'honesty box'. The fact that someone stole £200 worth of goods is very upsetting to the islanders. It is a big deal.

Ah... I didn't read the linked article.
I thought it was just some money taken from the honesty box.

Honesty boxes are common over here by the roadside where primary producers leave fruit and veg unattended for people to serve themselves.
I have no idea how much pilfering goes on but I imagine it is one of the risks that they take.

Quite a few places with honesty boxes here as well.

The guest house owner was interviewed on the radio and he had come from London a few years ago to live where it is peaceful and pretty and safe. He was very upset at this. They are talking about putting CCTV in the shop which is really a shame.

Im a bit late on this one, I really feel for these sorts of things ie honesty box etc this way of life is fast leaving us and its a real shame "really"
we're getting to the stage in life we're your a bit worried if you feel you'd like to help if you see someone walking in the rain going your way "do the people your offering a lift to think your some sort of pervert,
As we do live deep in the countryside its the norm to offer a lift to the village but we've always said only if we are both together in the car, "WHY" because we're worried if we pick up some sort of nutter,
Judge judy has a saying "no good turn goe's unpunished,
I really would like to help keep good honest care in the local commune because once you've experienced good honest friendship you'll understand it's a priceless act.

I believe in acting as if the world is as you want it to be, with obvious attention to safety of course.

I want the world to be friendly, so I am friendly.
I want people to be honest, so I must act honestly and assume others will do the same.
I want live in a generous community so I must model generosity. And so on.

This is how social capital is built up IMO.

It is a shame I've been honest to a fault in my life. I wouldn't want something I didn't pay for. Circumstances of this theft? Who knows. Were they hungry, greedy, stupid young people?

I've heard of honesty boxes for farm items. It's too bad they are taken advantage of.

Years ago when I lived in Washington state there was an older house on a busy road. One day a large sign appeared "A thief stole our wicker couch." It must have been on their porch.

I agree with Dame W's values in post #13, but feel that thieves are just running rampant , urban, rural , everywhere. In my city, lax courts & probation systems are letting repeat offenders run the streets.& people who aren't doing the actual stealing themselves are abetting by buying the stolen goods, everything from small electronics to copper wiring stripped out of buildings .

I think small villages, farms, rural areas are slightly different. You'll always get a certain amount of passing or casual traffic.

However, Canna only gets destination traffic - see this map

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canna,_Scotland

Just getting there requires some effort, so why spoil it when you do?

I don't think people get the remoteness of these islands. And I highly doubt that a resident did this. Maybe someone who docked their boat overnight?
