Have you ever gone to a psychic/fortune teller?

I remember watching John Edward the psychic reader on the T.V. I was not convinced he was genuine as he would refer to someone sitting behind a person and would say different people's names until somebody said, "Yes that was my Mother's name". What a co-incidence?

That's one of the psychics I saw in person. He only picked the people to read that were sitting in the front rows. We figured it was because they (his staff) had time to research them through their credit card info first, 'stead of those of us that purchased out tickets later.

Putin once went to a psychic.
She tells him he will die on a Ukrainian holiday.
"Which holiday exactly?" asks Putin.
"Any day that you die will be a Ukrainian holiday." she responds.
Xi Jinping has psychics or "readers" (or whatever) on his staff. He's been (fore)told that he'll be the last CCP leader of China; that he's going to crash and burn somehow, and that will be the end of the CCP. And this is supposed to happen soon.

Seems like a dangerous thing to say to a communist leader, even though it probably has a decent chance of being true. I don't think I would have delivered that one.

When I was younger I went to a few psychics. All except one came highly recommended. The one who wasn't was down the street from my job so I decided to check her out. It was obvious by the time the session was over that she was a charlatan. I think she only charged $5 though. Here are the ones I visited who were very accurate in most of what they told me. Understand that I never gave information up front to any of them and dodged answering any questions that they could "use" during the sessions. These are the main things I remember:

~Bread Lady: She told me that I would be (financially) well off one day. I couldn't understand how that was going to happen because I was a low wage clerical worker (for the city) and didn't see that changing. Her prediction came to fruition, though I wouldn't consider myself rich.

~Rev. Hewitt: Ironically she was recommended by my BFF at the time, who did not believe in that stuff. Rev. Hewitt told me that they liked me at my job and that I would be getting a big raise (again, I couldn't see that happening at the time). She told me that our office was in a new building. She knew that I had a young son and asked if his father was in our lives. I said No and she said, Good...you don't need him.

It turned out that she was right on all counts. I had permanently X-ed my ex from my life and did just fine without him. I didn't even ask for child support during the divorce. Years later, at the urging of my supervisor, I changed positions in my office twice. Each time came with a nice jump in salary and I wound up making almost four times what I was making when I visited Rev. Hewitt.

Coincidentally (??) I don't really believe in coincidences, but in 1988 when I took a metaphysical course at an adult night school with my current BFF and a friend of hers, our instructor covered different metaphysical topics each week. During one session she spoke about psychic abilities and psychics. She said the only ones she felt were the real deal were Bread Lady and Rev. Hewitt. I had not mentioned to her that I'd visited either of them.

I'll post about the other three psychics later in the thread. BTW I'm psychic and have threads in the Paranormal and Strange Occurrences category about some of my gifts and experiences. I haven't posted in a while and still have much more to write about.

When I was 29 I made an appointment for an Astrological reading. I was so impressed by his interpretation of my chart and my present situation that I began my own exploration of Astrology. Over the years I have read hundreds of charts. For me it is a useful tool to describe attributes of life that have "spiritual" qualities to them. I do not do prognostication though. I have yet to find anything reliable enough to predict the future with much accuracy.
Was just telling this story to a friend yesterday.....
Had a Phyc teacher in school that handed out astrological reading by your sign, had you review it and mark what you thought fit you and then had a discussion about it... most everyone agreed that it was a correct evaluation ..... Then we traded papers....
Everyone was given the same exact description....

I can understand how that can happen. The descriptions are purposely broad and usually everyone sees them as unique but they are not. I can guess a persons sign well within chance. I do have to meet them and be around them awhile, but sometimes I can even know what sign a person is by how they post. :) Believe it or not. :)

No. They are all bullshit.
Not so and I'm living proof of that. I also worked with two people who were psychic, so there were three of us in the office. If you care to, you can read my premonitions and "knowings" in the Paranormal and Strange Occurrences category as well as my reply #34 above. I'm sure there are many who are BSers and hang their shingles just to rip people off, but there are those of us who are the real deal. Some may charge...I never did and neither did my co-workers.

Divination is a practice that probably even preceded high level speech in humans. Much of it seems to be little more than an application of seat-of-the-pants psychological observation and intuition of others, sometimes with good props and a convincing manner.

Sometimes such tales and prophecy get collected into bound volumes that people desperately hug to their chests for generation after generation.

That's not to say it's worthless, or that it can't be helpful taken with some willing suspension of disbelief. Nor that it doesn't get bound up with some pretty decent rules for living and for treating each other well.
I have never gone to a psychic or fortune teller but I have done a tarot card reading on my daughter. Neither of us really knew what we were doing, we were just playing around and it was the only time I attempted it. I don't remember the details now but I do remember thinking that it used a lot of common sense and made you look inside yourself to basically answer your own questions.

What sign am I?

Not quite a fortune teller, but a Chinese fortune cookie. When my wife and I were dating, she got a fortune that said, "you will set foot on many lands". At that point, she did not even have a passport.
We subsequently married, and started traveling. When the dust settled, she had been to 41 countries in the Americas and Europe, and still has that fortune in her passport holder.
