A Nice Walk ( with photos )

Today just before we left for a walk we saw a ship passing directly in front of our house so I took a picture.

We went on the walk that goes along the Atlantic Ocean right in town. The last time we were here the tide was high and we couldn’t walk along the beach. This time it was low tide so we walked along the beach for a while.
IMG_5340.jpeg

On the way back we saw a murder of crows following a seagull. The seagull found something they clearly wanted.

It was a nice walk, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. I hope everyone has a lovely day.

Here’s a chunk of cement mixed with rock. To my eyes, it looked pretty.

I completely agree about that concrete boulder. I keep picturing it cut out from the rest of the photo and imagining it as an art object. The plants look like a kind of wallpaper overlay.

I don't have any worthy photos from a recent walk but here are some from an old favorite walk in Tilden Park, up above the steam trains. It is a short walk, less that two miles, that goes out around Volmer peak with views down across San Francisco Bay and then around the other side with views out toward Mount Diablo to the East.

The first two were taken early on a morning in August looking up through low clouds towards the sunrise on the other side of Volmer and then Mt. Diablo from the top. The rest are taken later in the day from other points on the route.

That’s exactly what I thought. It was a beautiful rock boulder surrounded by wildflowers. I’m glad I’m not the only person who saw it as beautiful . Thanks Mark. I hope you’re having a nice mini vacation.

Not yet but just couple more days. Anxiously awaiting an Amazon delivery of something I want to bring with us for the car. No walk yet today but once the package comes we'll get one. Hope I didn't include too many photos on that last post.

Oh my @MarkD. Your photos didn’t show up at first. In fact, your comments didn’t show up until later. I guess they took a while to download.

Do you have 2 dogs? I always thought you had just one. No Border Collie. Ok! These are older photos when you had 2 dogs. I just answered my own question. lol

That’s a gorgeous photo of your wife. She looks so carefree.

Your picture of the ladybug looks similar to my photo of the bumble bee. šŸ Very simplistic but lovely.

But that last photo is out of this world gorgeous. Look how high up you are on that hilltop(?) Or would you call that a mountain?

We certainly have similar tastes in things or so it seems.

It’s gotta be something really darn special if you’re waiting for it before you go. I’m excited for you. Of course you’ll be taking your dog. That goes without saying. How long will you be gone for? Dont answer if it’s too risky.

Those two dogs early on are dearly departed Fletcher and Heidi. Yes we will be bringing Ember and she is an only dog. It will be her first over night trip with us. Hopefully the start of things to come? The package I'm waiting for is an Igloo Portable Electric Coolers (18-60QT) which uses the cigarette lighter for power so doesn't require drippy ice.

She is doing better. We went to Fort Funston and at one point two bikes came up behind us on the pathway about 100 feet back. She barked while she kept them from sneaking up on me but when I hollered "no bikes", she came running. And actually yesterday afternoon on walk by the bay she was running with other dogs when a somewhat larger one got aggressive with her. She got fierce at first to hold her space but then she gave me her collar to leash. My little girl may be growing up.

That one of Lia was from before she started using walking sticks so she was pretty care free. The whole path we go is less than two miles. The view over San Francisco is taken toward the end, on our way back down to the parking lot.

We’ve taken our dogs many places and have never boarded any of them. We won’t go anywhere they are not allowed.

This is your dogs first outing. How exciting this will be for you all.
I wish you the best of luck. I’m sure she’ll be fine. Most places ask for a small fee as an insurance policy which is understandable.

Your other two dogs look gorgeous.
I’m sorry for your loss. That’s got to be the hardest part about having pets. Their lives are so much shorter than ours and when they die, they take a part of our heart with them.

I could tell that was an older picture of your wife. Her hair is shorter and not as grey. She looks like a lot of fun.

I looked up the Igloo Cooler. That’s a very smart move. Who wants to be dealing with ice or ice packs while travelling. A great purchase.
Don’t forget a dog bowl. You’ve probably got one in your vehicle.

It’s good that your dog is protective and stands her ground but knows to come when instructed. What a well behaved dog. Is she young?
She certainly looks like a young dog.

The photo overlooking San Francisco is breathtaking. It really shows how high you are.

Well I best leave you to get ready to go. I sincerely hope all goes well and you have a fabulous time.
Drive carefully and stay safe.

Today we went on a shorter 1/2 an hour walk.
IMG_5372.jpeg

It is 34 degrees out so we chose the dense forest walk with many streams. It’s got the long boardwalk.

Our dogs found a nice swimming hole perfect for them to cool off.

I would enjoy that one too! It reminds me of our visit to Hot Spring Cove in British Columbia back around 1987.

We took the ferry from Vancouver to Naimamo, drove across to the coast and up to Tofino. Got on a motorboat for the last hour to the dock. Then we hiked a beautiful one mile walk through a rain forest on planks before pitching our tents in a primitive camping area. I doubt it works like that any longer. But the hot springs emerge from a spring, tumble down a nine foot falls and then sift through tide pools to the ocean, with every temperature range on offer. Not my photos.

The pictures you just posted remind me of when I biked ( motorcycle ) into the Banff hot springs and camped. It was amazing. I’ve also drove into British Columbia and Vancouver. The amount of mountain goats surprised me. We also saw a lot of Buffalo.

The first time I sat in the Banff hot springs was on a school trip. There was snow on some of the mountains still. Later in my teen years I biked up there with a friend. I’ve got pictures somewhere but don’t know where at the moment.

Today was a great day for me. I hope you are having fun on your trip.

Stunningly beautiful pics of that stunningly beautiful environment!!!

Today was partially sun, partially cloud and 26 degrees Celsius.
IMG_5393.jpeg

We walked almost 4 kilometres. The path has plenty of boardwalks and is fairly hilly. It seems a lot longer due to the terrain. Half of the trail is groomed and half isn’t.
IMG_5406.jpeg

Here’s the steepest hill with stairs
IMG_5395.jpeg

Here’s the lookout point. There’s not enough water in the river for it to be interesting enough. It looks nicer in the fall and winter.

NIce capture on the woodpecker! So we're headed home today in few hours. Thought I'd take a break from packing up to post some photos from our walks in the Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden. We came here on our way in and again then the next day (yesterday).

Unfortunately I forgot to pack my meds so I had no prostate meds which had me worried I'd be unable to pee at all or else get an infection. But by erring on the side of peeing too often, so far no problems. But our first night here we got too little sleep. Lia gave me half an Ambien but she doesn't turn in in anywhere close to as early as I do so mine had pretty much worn off by the time she did. I was a zombie on Friday. Boo hoo but we picked up more sleep meds yesterday and last night I slept nearly ten hours.

In the photos that follow I'll post a picture of one of the new placards they have showing the kinds of birds attracted in that part of the garden and then a few others from that area. Let me know if this is too much for this thread. We did get good walks each day but mostly just wondering through the gardens. Starting on day one when we mostly hung out in the Perennial and Woodland gardens.

On day two we started earlier while there was a lot of fog and low clouds and walked straight back to coast with stops to see the Heath and Heather garden and the Dahlia collection.

I restricted myself to buying just one plant, this one.

53896803810_a5c5d15121_b.jpg

I’m glad you did ok without having your meds.
Like yourself, if I don’t sleep, I’m useless. I need at least 8 to 10 hours sleep, mainly do to the medication I’m on. If I don’t take it I’m luckily if I get 4 or 5 hours.

The gardens are wonderful. The contrast of colour compared to the walk photos I posted the day before are extraordinary. I like the signs that tell you what types of birds the plants attract. Beautiful photos you took Mark. The colours are gorgeous.

You didn’t tell us how your dog did on his first stay over outing. (?) Was your dog good. Did your dog ā€˜get with the program.’ Your dog photos are always fabulous.

Thats a gorgeous plant you purchased Mark.
I’ve never seen anything like it. Where abouts do you live?

Today for me was lazy day. I didn’t go on a walk. I even had a day nap! I’m growing to love day naps. Sometimes they really mess up my bedtime though. I basically really like sleeping. It’s something I wasn’t expecting. Usually im high energy. The meds that I’m on turn me ā€˜sloth-ish.’

P.S. How to you get more than 5 photos in a post?i know I did it before but I now forget

Was your dog good. Did your dog ā€˜get with the program.’

She did very well. I brought her kennel and set it up on my side of the room. She hopped in each night and didn't make a peep even with both of us back and forth to the bathroom all night. I brought the book I'm reading now, The Piano Tuner, and when I was reading it she would lay at my feet. I took this crappy photo of her sleeping at the foot of the chair I read in.

53901668745_4451556d8e_b.jpg

What worked in our favor is the size of the property and the solid fences all around. If people had been opening and closing car or motel room doors a lot she would have been sounding off about it. I really need to work with her about how to meet new people though. We do it all the time on walks but I haven't used the opportunity to train. I will now. But when I first let her out of the care to meet our host, instead of sitting politely in front of her she circled around her low in a herding motion. No offense taken but kind of like a rude child.

One thing about our cottage that delighted me was the windows at the end of the living room above a day bed where just outside in some shrubbery she has placed bird feeders. Usually there were a few large blue and black jays hopping around and they were showier but when they weren't there a greater variety of smaller birds came.

53900135303_ce28fe7f1c_b.jpg

I took this the morning we left of the smaller birds.

The first photo I took of Ember might have been the best. But the one of her sitting with Lia on a bench was fun because of the likeness of their expression.

I hope you enjoyed your lazy day. Much better to take a walk when the appetite for it is there, otherwise you could come to dislike what otherwise is such a source of joy. After our first night there when I got so little sleep we cut our walk short. We came back to the cottage and I read until I napped a little.

The secret to posting more than five photos is to have them hosted elsewhere. There are many alternative for that now but I've had mine on Flickr for a long time and when they finally went commercial I decided to pony up the money but it used to be a person could start a free account at any time. The number of photos those would allow is less but unless you're obsessive (like me) that is still quite a lot of storage.

We live in Berkeley so the drive up to Fort Bragg took about three hours. The new car is so much more comfortable than the 2006 Subaru I'd been driving that I had no problem with discomfort. The drive home involved many more stops but mostly because of my having been two days without taking either of my prostate meds. I was expecting that so no huge deal.

Oh yeah, on our last day in the garden we met a fellow using a walker that Lia took a fancy too. Haven't ordered it yet but it won't be long.

The pictures you just posted remind me of when I biked ( motorcycle ) into the Banff hot springs and camped.

I just realized that is something else we had in common. I rode a motorcycle for a while in my twenties. Though did like camping I never used it to go camping. I liked the feeling of riding, of always having your center of gravity in line with the bike no matter how sharply you banked. Much more aesthetic than getting pushed from side to side in the cab of a four wheeler in turns. Of course the acceleration was a thrill too, passing seemed to be instantaneous on my Triumph Trident which I bought used in my twenties.

I always thought you had a Border Collie but she looks like a mixture; border collie and something else. I had to laugh when you said she herds people she doesn’t know. That’s definitely the border collie in her. They instinctively do that.

One of our dogs is quite the little watch dog. We’ve taken them places and if he hears others, he’ll start barking to let us know. He’s just over 2 years old now; still trainable.

Your little cottage is nice. I like the bird feeders also. That’s a nice added touch. Watching the birds is such a peaceful thing to do. The Jays do tend to scare the smaller birds away. Even their call is loud.

Thanks for telling me the secret to posting more photos. I used to use a separate website for storing my photos but stopped due to forgetting my password.

A three hour drive isn’t too bad. That’s reasonable. We have two vehicles too. We have a nice Mazda SUV and a Nissan car. Most of our vehicles have been Japanese makes and models. We find Japanese almost maintenance free. They are very easy to care for.

We have been using a car more lately since it’s 1/3 less expensive on gas. On really hot days like today it’s best to take the SUV. The heating and air conditioning is much superior in it than the car.

I like Lia’s taste in walkers. Thats a smart one. I like how portable it is. It folds up to be very compact which is something to really consider. I like the fact that it’s got a nice comfortable chair too for if you want to sit down. It looks like it could handle various terrains.

Today was a very hot day. We should have left earlier but I slept it. Last night I took a sleeping pill. When I take those they really work. Unfortunately they make me really groggy the next day.

We walked 4.8 kilometres today. Part way through the walk we took our dogs down to the ocean to cool them off in the water. They were really hot.

IMG_5413.jpeg
It’ was nice and breezy beside the water.
After walking the trail we went down again.
IMG_5417.jpeg
What I like the most about the trails we take is how well maintained they are. It’s mowed once a week and any trees that fall are quickly moved out of the way.

Today I saw a very pretty butterfly. I read that the lifespan of most butterflies are only one to two weeks.

IMG_5420.jpeg
On the way back I took a couple of pictures of the boats out in the harbour.

IMG_5422.jpeg
There are quite a few.
IMG_5424.jpeg

Looks like a Pipevine butterfly, a kind I’ve been trying to attract to my garden by growing its larval food. I imagine there are regional differences between populations of these guys but they had become rare in my area so lots of us are trying to bring it back. I like their color.

That’s it. Very good Mark! The video is very informative. I’m not sure how popular they are here. I don’t remember seeing many of them.

Today is a cooler day. It is only 18 degrees out and breezy. We walked on mountain road. It was a short walk. I didn’t feel like walking a long way today and it looked like it was going to rain. I hope it does rain today. It will save me having to water my flowers and plants.

IMG_5435.jpeg
Today we cleaned up our stock room and threw out a batch of expired dog food and cat food ( since we have no cat). We dumped it up here. We didn’t dump it on our property since we don’t wish to attract wild dogs to our lot. IMG_5436.jpeg
This morning I saw another bunny. This year there seems to be a surplus of rabbits. They are everywhere.

We went for a second walk today.
We needed to go shopping anyway so we decided to take our dogs for a second walk. This is probably their favourite walk. It’s only a 35 to 40 minute walk but it’s a popular dog walking path so lots of dog pee to smell. lol.

Today we had my brother in law over for a visit. It’s been years since I’ve seen him.
It was a lovely visit. We offered that he could spend the night but he wants to do the Cabot Trail. He said the bike ride to our house was the nicest ride he’s been on since getting his new bike. It’s a 1900 cc Harley Davidson bike worth over $40,000. At least he’s smart enough to wear full leathers. I cropped his head off to protect his identity.

IMG_5463.jpeg
Part way along the path there are musical bowl and a padded bonger. Of course I had to try it
