As a senior, do you think you've acquired "wisdom"?

A bit wiser. Example is me watching somebody doing something that I KNOW is going to get them hurt, because I did the same dumb thing a long time ago. Working on cars is a learning experience that some younger people have not yet gotten the hang of. A simple thing like putting a wood block in front of a tire, so the car doesn't move when you jack it up. Or waiting for an over heated engine to cool down, on it's own, instead of rushing to take off the radiator cap. Doing the fluid levels first thing in the morning, before you start the company truck.

If you are bleeding from an injury to your hand or arm, raise your arm above your head and apply a bandage to it. If you get a burn, run cold water on it for at least 5 minutes, then apply a dry dressing NO GREASE OR BUTTER.

I once did an Ambulance call where a guy had spilled a pan of boiling grease on his legs in a hotel kitchen. Somebody had smeared tooth paste all over his legs, thinking it would help the guy. What it really did was seal the heat into the wound. His recovery must have been horrible because somebody did the completely wrong thing to him.

If folks don't mind. I really do not understand what it means to be wise. Does it mean you have learned from your mistakes? Does it mean you understand what life means? I think some people believe certain people are wise, and other people don't. so is it a totally subjective , with no real definition?

I have learned a lot and tried to always maintain an open mind. I do not judge people. If there is someone that constantly upsets me or pushes my buttons I simply avoid that person. I don't feel it is necessary to argue, but I do not hesitate to state my opinion.

All of these things are things I haved learned since I was young so yes, I would like to say I am wiser. It's all relative.

Wisdom in terms of what it takes to work for a living. Wisdom in terms of what it takes to be married and raise kids. Wisdom in terms of what is a real value for the money and what isn't. Wisdom in terms of how to fix things that break or wear out. Wisdom in terms of knowing what you know for sure versus knowing what you will never know (so you can stop beating yourself up if you didn't learn certain things in your lifetime.

Wisdom that comes from acceptance of the world the way it is and people the way they are.

From this @OldFeller I have achieved a fair amount of wisdom then. :)

Like many of you, I've been around a lot and had many varied experiences. I'd like to think I've learned from them.

I do know this, if only I knew back then what I know now!

When my 4 kids were young and thru their teens, I did my best to counsel and advise them. They were teens in the late '70s and early '80s, which were, IMO, hard times to be a teen. Three of the four had a lot of difficulties, made some bad decisions, and the results of those show today.

One son was different, got good grades thru high school, stayed out of trouble, did a 6 year stint in the USMC, got his Bachelors, his Masters, and then his Doctorate. He is very successful in so many ways, and a good man too.

I asked him a number of years ago, "how come you are so successful and your brothers and sister are having a rough time?" He thought a bit and said, "two reasons.... the first is when you talked to us, I listened and considered it. My brothers just wouldn't listen". "And the other reason is I was looking to tomorrow, and they always were concerned just for the moment, the day".

i know a LOT of "stuff". stuff that worked its way into my thick skull along the way.

i NEVER look at the date on carton of eggs, but ALWAYS open carton... to not just look at the eggs but give each one a touch to make sure none are stuck... thanks, Nana!

there are 5280 feet in a mile.

wish i knew the metric system better. i KNOW a meter is about 3" longer than a yard. i KNOW a liter is a few swigs more than a quart. now kilos... kilometers and/kilograms... either 2 to a mile/pound or 2 miles/lbs make a kilo... can never remember.

i think it's incredibly sad that kids can't do fractions without their phone or a calculator.

Five miles is 8 kilometers. Here in Canada the posted highway speed is 100 kph, which is 62 miles an hour, rounded off to 60 mph. A kilo is 2.2 pounds. This morning I weigh 87 kilos, which is 191 pounds, and I stand 179 centimeters tall which is about five foot ten inches. A kilometer is 1,000 meters.

The metric system is based on units of ten. One of something, ten of it, a hundred of it, a thousand of it. There are no fractions in the metric measurement system. Your mechanic's socket wrenches in the metric system are even numbers, such as a 6 mm wrench, or a 10 mm wrench, or a 14 mm wrench.

Americans use the Metric system every day, without thinking about it. A 2 liter bottle of soda, a 9 mm Glock pistol, a 5 liter V8 car engine, a kilo of cocaine, and so on. Industry, medicine, science, all use the metric system in the USA. It is at the most basic level where the average American has problems thinking about, and using Metric systems. Only 2 countries in the world do not use Metric officially. The USA is one, and the other country is a small place in Africa, that no one remembers the name of.

Yes....and your experiences.

Does learning from your mistakes and experiences mean you understand what life means? No, not life in general. You can only assess and opine about what life means to you based on your experiences and lessons.

i say just go to metric and let the whiney Americans whine. those of us who want to and can learn something new... well, we will adjust. i just have to remember (somehow... need a mnemonic) that a kilogram is a little more than 2 lbs and a kilometer is a little more than 2 miles.

If anything, I've become more of an idiot. I couldn't open the gate at my son's place and had to ask for help.
