After retiring I hardly ever used mine, and only very rarely took it out of the house.
But now my smart home devices rely on it for configuration and monitoring, my car wants it connected for software support and navigation. Medical, insurance, pharmacy, pension, banking, investment, Social Security/Medicare, and online shopping accounts require its use in two-factor authentication. Medical lab tests require texting unless you want to sit in their waiting rooms for an hour or more. The last 5 payphones around here were decommissioned in the past year.
Family began using texting for much communication, so the home phone hardly gets used. Friends have begun doing the same.
Even local retailers now offer discounts you can only get by using their "phone app."
None of these are really by choice.
