Sadly, it seems to be a fact that many people cannot publicly debate issues with civility.
When a person disagrees with someone, some individuals immediately default to the belief that the person must hate them or is stupid.
No, the person can still like and respect you but have a different opinion and not be stupid.
This attitude causes division, anger and tribalism.
It hinders hope of meaningful progress with many issues.
I would like, for the sake of sanity, that topics be discussed with respect for each others diverse thoughts and opinions.
Have your say, put your case without vitriol and the world will be a nicer, more understanding place.
Screaming, mocking and vilifying contrary people does not help or support discussions.

Unfortunately some people can't take part in a discussion without making things personal. There was someone else doing that, which is why I took a break from this site, but he seems to have gone now.

Most likely agreeing with the person or disagreeing is cool.

some things just have to work out with time. Col. O’Neal once said I don’t understand most everything I hear.

This is a great reminder but I think that about all we can do is make an effort to control and improve our own behavior.

Sometimes you can learn more from the reaction scores or from the absence of members than from the people that choose to participate in a thread.

The silent majority is alive and well. 😉🤭😂

Of course people have different opinions, that is why we have discussions. What I'm referring to is someone deliberately attacking a fellow member. I was a target, but I deliberately ignored him because I think he wanted a public confrontation. I wasn't the only one he targeted. As I say, he doesn't seem to be on the site any more.
 
Nice thoughts... and that approach often works. But I do think we need to remember that in an online setting, there are [whether we like it or not] pot-stirrers who live to do just that. You offer the simplest of facts, and they'll find a way to dispute it. I suspect that often they don't even disagree at all, just get jollies out of causing drama. 🤷‍♀️
 
I got in a thread personally attacked by another member with a VERY rude comment. At first I thought of fighting back with similar rude words. But in this case I'd have been on his very low level too. Thus I decided to give me a break and left this forum for quite some time (several months).

Meanwhile this member had vanished.

What I dislike next is fooling other members. There was (I hope this person will not return!) somebody who told us being 80 years old and started a thread with a question.

Some of us answered, but received bad comments on this forum and ourselves. I'd feel fooled and regret that I wasted my time to trust such a person and answered.

I don't know George, I can't shake the feeling this person was genuine and just boxed herself in. Dug a hole which she couldn't get out of and REacted. I don't know of course, but that's my feeling. I'm glad you brought her up, since the thread is closed I can't make that comment there. People get strange when they feel alone in something and up against a wall of misunderstanding. Just my take is all..... I was amused by all the support for dilettante, no offense meant here to anyone. Peace & Love.
 
Supposedly there is mythical era, when we had nothing but total love and trust in our fellow human beings, and anything they could say would never upset us. Trouble is nobody has ever found the saints, who lived in that era., nor any trace of that era. We always been petty, judgmental, and intolerant - that comes with being human. Yet, we have a concept of law and a code of conduct. Life is trying to juggle both.
 
Our little town in a dither since the local election and the mayor and aldermen are new to their positions. There is a barrage of complaints about the streets, water cost and some have discoloration (probably their own plumbing issue). There is only one police officer since the others were either fired or quit. I actually don't know the source of the problems, but I do know that a new administration deserves more than a couple weeks to address issues without being buried by complaining persons who don't even vote. Typical small town silliness.

The community does change over time. People leave and join and the world turns. The community adapts the best it can. I have been here for a little over 3 years. When strong feelings are expressed we don't always have skirmishes. Some of them are are even fun, not the hurt feelings one's, but some strong disagreements have panned out ok. The rules that are in place here are working very good. Not too loose and not to tight, which allows us a lot of freedom todo as we please. We don't need no stinking new rules, right?
