Supermarket apples looked pathetic, so I went to a local orchard to get some Cortland apples and delicata squash. Looked like everything was pretty well picked over. They put the different varieties of apples in separate bins and you can select what you want out of them. Many that were left had imperfections, but I managed to find about a dozen that were okay with me. The clerk gave me a deal on the squash. The sign said $3 each, but they were so small, she let me have them for $1 each. :)

Making cupcakes to freeze for kids visit next week. We're having a surprise Halloween day. They can decorate and we'll have games movie etc. The cupcakes will have scary eyeballs.
Before you ask why not wait and bake them with the kids. Have you baked with kids lately? Their visit is short so I don't want the drama. 😁🎃 Really, they're getting to the age they would rather I do that work and they enjoy. 🎂

Star my mother used to use the expression "fix a pallet" when she referred to putting sheets or quilts on the floor or couch for someone to sleep on. In my case the pallet will be on the barrel chair that's in the bedroom of this suite. I tried with the bed but it is not working. 😏

I haven't slept in a bed and almost 10 years, other than trying a couple of times when I came to the resort. Two reasons:
~ I'd wake up feeling like someone beat me up, I would be so achy. Strange thing is I have what I call a Tempur-Pedic waterbed. It's a cylinder water bed with a Tempur-Pedic topping and it's quite comfortable actually, but for some unknown reason, not for my body anymore.

~ Around the same time I started feeling achy when waking up from the bed I realized after falling asleep in my recliner that sleeping with my head elevated helped to alleviate the palpitations caused by my atrial fibrillation. Bonus.... no achy feeling!

This works out so well. When I invited my son to move back in with me I knew he could sleep in the master bedroom. Our second bedroom had been converted to a music studio/office years ago.
Thank you for explaining this. My husband wakes up achy unless he arranges about 6 throw pillows in various spots under his body, so I kind of get where you're coming from. Not all bodies do well after lying flat for several hours. Glad you found what works for yours.

Not long home at 3.40pm... a real miserable drizzly overcast day... I had to go into town for an appointment so I arranged to meet my friend afterwards and we went to the pub and had lunch...
IMG-6136.jpg
...then after that I drove to the next town to get the biggest supermarket, to get fruit and milk..... crikey, the price.. I was stunned.. almost £40 for basically milk, fruit and veggies.. and a couple of other small bits.. just astounding prices now.

I had intended going to Costco which is in the other direction .. but I need the fruit, and they don't sell the grapes that I like, so it'... so I'll leave that for another day...

any news from Florida ?.... I haven't had a chance to look at the news today....

@hollydolly Do y'all use/have coupons over there? If not for coupons, we'd be spending a whole lot more than we do for groceries. And are grocery sales advertised online?

Just not feeling it today, but I did manage to get dressed and do a couple of little household chores.

@OneEyedDiva I've got a memory foam mattress...not just a topper, but a mattress. Mine is a Tuft & Needle, but there are lots of others out there. Since getting it (going on 8 years) I haven't had sore-back mornings. It conforms to the body while you're on it, then springs back to original shape when you get up. It looks as good (and sleeps as good!) as the day I got it.

These new memory foam mattresses happened because Tempurpedic's patent expired, and a lot of their employees left to start their own companies using Tempurpedic's "formula."

No we don't get coupons like you do in the USA I really wish we did.. we get the occasional vouchers if we use a loyalty card but of course the loyalty card is like Big Brother and tells the supermarket all about your spending habits.. etc.. so lots of pople refuse to have them.. and then the supermarkets realised this and the upped the prices.. by a LOT.. for people who don't have a loyalty card...

But the short answer is NO, we don't have coupons generally...

Woke up to 51F and overcast. Sometimes I like it when it's cloudy and almost feel disappointed if the sun comes out. Weird, I know. Now, the sun is peeking out at 54F and I want the clouds back! Does anyone else get this feeling once in awhile?

Doggie keeps softly woofing as tho' someone is coming, but nobody is. I wonder what's up with her.

Have chores to take care of; dusting, floors, fridge, counters and stove etc. Thawing chopped chicken for dog's lunch. I'm getting hungry but can't decide.

I hope Floridians are okay. 🙏

Flu shot yesterday afternoon and feeling fine this morning. The injection site is barely sore, and only if I press the spot. Since I had Covid again in August, I'll wait until mid November for that updated shot. Wouldn't have gotten it yesterday anyway. I learned the hard way to never again get more than one vaccine at a time. Don't need that life lesson again.

Some minor business chores this morning - no more than an hour or two though. Household chores after that - usual stuff. Book club and dinner with a small group of friends tonight .

Zoomed last night with some FL friends. Two live about 150 miles apart as the crow flies and neither is in the primary target/evacuation zone, so they've battened down their hatches and will ride out the storm in their homes. Another is in an area expected to take a direct hit so she and her husband secured their home as best they could and evacuated to a friend's house in a much safer location.

Their calm, detailed discussion of preparation equipment, steps and strategies was an eye-opening education in hurricane readiness.

Beautiful weather here. A sunny 90° high today, overnight low was 59°. I've got the fans bringing in the cool air and will shut everything down and close up the house at 9 AM, at which point the outdoor temps will exceed my indoor temp (68° right now). Shouldn't need AC this afternoon.

Hope you all have a great day!

Well, my back and joints let me down today....was getting fixed
to shower, and got sidetracked trying on some old sweatpants
and others for coming cold weather, by the time I got done my
back was so damn painful I could barely walk....so setting hear
on the heatpad, hoping to shower a bit later on....:cautious:

Large black bear tore down the neighbor's bird feeders.
Their game camera got it's picture.
He thinks the bear looks to be 600 pounds!

I'm surprised a bear hasn't been eating the apples on the ground here.

Our game camera has been up for a few days.
Trying to get pictures of buck that are coming to the feeder.

@hawkdon,, hope you can get into the shower.
A hot / warm shower should help with aches & pains .

Welp, smell a bit better, got the shower done...will admit it
makes e nervous getting into the tub, I mean i have grab bars,
bath chair and all that, but still makes me nervouse, given my
recent historty......
@hawkdon , if this helps.... remember that in your recent fall history, you did not have a grab bar, nor were you sitting down. Keeping these in mind, maybe you can feel more confident in the shower and still be cautious. Maybe another grab bar would help. 🌹

DSIL's friend at work brought him a huge sack of greens. He loves greens. I don't like greens and don't like the smell while they're cooking:sick: DD won't even attempt to cook them so guess who cooks greens for him? If you guessed me, you guessed right.

Whoever gave them to him, cleaned them well. Yay for that because they're a nuisance to try to get the dirt off.

I could only fit half of them in the pot; the other half will get cooked tomorrow and frozen so whenever he has a hankerin' for greens, he can just throw some in the nuke box.

Watching himmicane news on The Weather Channel. Jim Cantore is holding forth. When Jim Cantore is there, you know it's bad. Would you believe they actually showed a clip of people out on a pier. There was even a picture of somebody on their boat in a marina. What. Is. Wrong. With. People???? I hope they heeded the advice to write their names on their arms so that they can be identified when their bodies are found:oops::rolleyes:

Got the for want of a better word ''stew''.. cooking now.. I've included, chestnut mushrooms, potatoes, leeks, red onions, broccoli, sausages , and of course minced beef.. with gravy..

In a few minutes I'll add sugar snap peas, and dumplings... .. then it'll be ready to cool down to portion up later tonight...
What are chestnut mushrooms, Hols?

I spent most of the day just chilling. I did walk to the check cashing place to buy a sheet of 10 senior Jitney tickets for $7.50. Without them 10 rides on a Jitney would cost $30. I love that the Jitney Association was kind enough to keep senior prices the same after they raised their price  by.50 cents.

As I walked back I heard a bird making the cutest sound that I'd never heard before. I don't know what kind of bird it was though. I sat on the boardwalk for a little while and walked back to the hotel when it started getting chilly. Due to the wind forecast I started not to go out. But It was not as windy as I expected and it was a beautiful day, so I'm glad I did. I took the first two pictures before coming in.
I took the red and white boat (using a magnified setting) from the balcony.
