On a recent visit to my Doc's, he asked if I drank. I said, no. He asked again, like he didn't believe me. I'm not anti-alcohol, or anything, but I just don't drink anymore. I have a bottle of Champaigne, year 2000, that I've never opened. In my younger days, I was well on my way to becoming a non-sober bar rat. I even had my own bar seat, like on "Cheers". And yes, I slept with my head on the bar.

Mine changed but not by preference. I used to love a nice craft brew or glass of wine. But, following horrible pains for months and months in 2021, was diagnosed with severe GERD and a hiatal hernia. I usually go about 2 or 3 months teetotal, then will buy one of those little 4 packs of tiny wine bottles, which lasts me a couple weeks. Then off again for awhile.

Compared to my 20s and early 30s, I started drinking a lot less in my 40s, 50s, and 60s. I’m fine with just one glass but now I have to give my stomach time to heal even for that.

He suggested I was an alcoholic that is why I quit. I really wondered about him.

Yes, strange, presumptuous and rude statement, at least to me. Even if research has proven it, he should not have hit you over your psychological head with that. Not very nice and poor bedside manner. 😂 Well, I made the wise choice to quit, though I was not an alcoholic. Alcoholism has surrounded me since childhood. Grateful I escaped.

Definitely. I did drink more years ago but never to real excess.
I now find myself content with one drink, maybe two, of wine. I enjoy a glass but never overdo it.

I must say I wouldn't like to be a non- drinker. It's nice to relax of an evening, especially if we have friends over. Alcohol is great if taken moderately. I believe small amounts do you good.

I've never tried drugs, joints or weed or such. I feel I have missed out really and it's too late!
Well it’s legal in most places so you can always try it. Just do it with someone who has done it before. It’s really not for everyone. My husband has tried it a few times and each time he says he doesn’t like it. Maybe it’s good thing you haven’t tried it.

I tried it a couple of times in the 70s and didn’t care for it.

Now, I would consider it for medical use as opposed to recreational use.

The same with alcohol, when my mother got to be uber old she had a daily glass of brandy to relieve minor unspecified aches and pains the way other people use aspirin.

Never drank at all …and never smoked …or even tried it. ..the stench of my parents house …from the combination of cig smoke and beer was enough to put me off for life
My Hubs will have a single can of beer on special accessions but he’s never smoked either

Many where I grew up took Bex powder several times a day for unspecified pain ..most swallowed it down with beer , I don’t even know what was in it ….
many were addicted to it, so in many cases it was far deadlier then smoking / Alcohol

What was wrong with Bex?
From the mid-1950s thousands of Australian women swallowed millions of evil-tasting powders carrying the brand names Bex
Their contents, indicated by the generic term APC, were aspirin, phenacetin and caffeine. In combination they were both addictive and deadly.

Why was Bex taken off the market?
Marketed in the 1960s to help relax after a stressful day, Bex powders were later linked to cancer and kidney failure. They were banned from sale in Australia in the 1970s.

I drank off and on at disco clubs in my young adulthood. 💃🏽 When I did drink, I wanted to drink like it was Kool-aid because of the color and sweetness. I mostly was not able to sip and make a drink last a long time. So this meant that I had to have several drinks.

In my 40s, I started studying wines and what went with what food, dinners and desserts. I anticipated going to the grocery store. I would spend a lot of time in the wine section, studying and selecting. It was also fun because as a paper crafter, I loved looking at the different labels and thinking how I could use them in collage art. I liked the bottles colors and began collecting them. I displayed them on top of my kitchen cabinets. I also began to drink Mike's Hard Ciders, like apple, lemonade and cherry. These were for when I wasn't eating dinner and drinking wines. 🤔 But, I was single at that time and eating my dinners and drinking alone. Sometimes, I drank most of the bottle.

One day I perceived that there was something wrong. Why was I needing to have my brain chemistry altered in order to enjoy life? Why couldn't I find as much enjoyment in life with flavored waters, fruit juices and other non-alcoholic drinks? I could tell that I was becoming more involved with drinking alcohol.

In addition to experiencing the buzz, considerations like pretty labels and colorful glass were enticing me. I felt like it was some type of barely recognizable deception that was leading me into a deep hole, so I decided to stop. Just like that. One day I decided to stop. I have never touched any fermented drinks since. While my decision was not based on religious conviction, it corresponded with my Christian development. There was nothing useful for me, or in my relationships with anyone else, in me drinking alcohol and getting buzzed.

I am grateful that I don't drink. 🙏🏾 I experienced alcoholism in my father, some of my brothers, people I have met and worked with, my 2 husbands, one husband's mother and some men I have dated. To this day, I don't know how I escaped becoming an alcoholic.

Well, I was a real party animal back in the day... Me and the boys got together every Friday and had a few...Every other Friday we would get together for poker... Would always have a couple of beers after doing renovations... Then I got diabetes...that put the end to having beers... Then the car accident happened, and found a new hunger for whiskey (Forty Creek) Took the painkillers (morphine) and a couple of shots of whiskey on ice... Over the years the whiskey slowed down, still have a glass of it over ice, or a Manhattan... But every day I have a shot of vodka with tonic water over ice now... Doctors family and friends are all aware of it... and NO I do NOT have a drinking problem...

I grew up with non-drinking parents, partied hard (still drunk for the next morning's classes some days) a couple of semesters in college until I got a C in chemistry so stopped drinking at all through the rest of undergrad. Through most of my adult life I'd have 4-10 drinks a month, but over the last couple of years I've had less than that.

What is it with people giving you grief cause you turn down a drink. I used to get double grief every New Years Eve cause its my BD.
I do drink occasionally at home only. Once or twice a year I have some Kahlua in my hot chocolate.

Funny thing is when I was single people used to think I drank cause I was the instigator. My thoughts. If you have to be drunk to dance on the table, then you shouldn't be up there. :D

I drank some in high school and then got married young and had kids so didn’t drink. After they grew up I had new friends and spouse and my social life involved alcohol.

5 years ago I got serious about my weight and lost 50lbs. I wanted to eat all my calories so don’t drink anything with calories except for 2 cups of coffee and then water the rest of the day. People say weird things sometimes when they find out you don’t drink.

Pot is legal here and many people use it recreationally and for pain or to sleep. I always assumed that it couldn’t be good for you and would cause health problems so never use it. Recently studies are coming out linking it to heart problems.
