Where does the desire to mate come from?

I'm sure the answer from believers is that it comes from God, so this would be a question for those who don't subscribe to that belief.
Many animals and fish either never see their young or abandon them shortly after birth, so it doesn't seem to be for them to love and nurture.
Why would any organism have the desire or instinct to reproduce itself?

Nature wants all species to replicate themselves, so it's built in. I would ask another question, 'Are humans the only creature to actually enjoy the mating act?'
Why is it that humans are able to reproduce before they are fully mature and able to care for their young?

It comes down to the erogenous zones right? "Ero" the God/dess of love. Extremely powerful drive to exchange biological info. Makes us do crazy things, some real good, mostly disappointment and some embarrassing times. Mother nature, like PP says. Part of the matrix. The drive that creates different races. The genetic information defining the smallest of details, even to our abilities to reason. Without it Shakespeare and a lot of great art would not be. Probably Rock and Roll would have never happened. :)

To get the full answer one must consult the birds and the bees. They know. :)

It's the women's fault:
They pout their lips, flutter their eyes, waggle their backsides and make their bosoms bounce about like a pair of ferrets in a sack..... we fellas are just hauled in as if by some magnetic force.... and it's lovely. 😊

Because it is its nature. Why is it its nature? Because the survival of that species could not be possible without the results of its nature. Because, grasshopper, otherwise you would not be here to ask the question.
Up to a point it is nature, but what other species has the large, like for like gender relations as that of human beings. The UK Office for National Statistics' Census for 2021 showed a total of 748,000 who described themselves as gay. Male/male. The lesbian, female/female count was 624,000. That's one million, three hundred and seventy-two thousand who simply cannot procreate, well not without a little help from a test tube.

One-hundred percent nature, survival of the fittest.

Well, it seems that nature offers up a bit of a bribe to assure reproduction (That being obtaining some degree of pleasure from it). This seems easy to understand for those species who actually make physical contact during copulation, but fish and some other creatures don't, so how does ejecting one's eggs or sperm into a stream or the ocean bring about any pleasure? It's not like we can ask them "So, how was it for you"?

How do some species get their kicks? Is there always a neurological reward, or is it just something they gotta do, so let's get on with it. Salmon literally beat themselves to death to get to their love nest, and let's face it, Salmon Sex can't be all that great, and they certainly don't look their best for this romantic rendezvous after the road trip.

It's not like any of these species have a credible understanding that they must do this for the survival of the species. How could they know that? It just seems built in. Turtles just lay their eggs in the sand, cover them up, and split. It's not like they're ever going to get a trophy mug that says "Best Mom Ever".

Still, nature seems hell bent on having kids, so something mysterious is going on there. Many animals don't get flowers, or chocolates, or even a courtesy thank you, and from what I can observe, male animals aren't often polished lovers, so apparently being "In season" causes more discomfort than the act. What a predicament.

The urge to mate is just as strong in homosexuals. It just doesn't result in reproduction.

This is something that can only be surmised. But it can leave you with other related questions as well. A female lion can mate up to 100 times a day with multiple partners when she is in season.

Now, that's a girl who gets around (Not judging here), but if she was doing it for the pleasure, then why wouldn't she be doing it all the other months of the year. Yes, sure, she would get a reputation, but girls just wanna have fun, right?

On, the other hand, anyone who has ever had a dog hump their leg surely realizes he isn't doing it to make puppies, so he's gotta be gettin something out of it. I don't even want to know what his response is to the other mutts who ask him how his date went with his owner.

On the surface, it would seem that hooking up would be a very strange thing to seek if it didn’t bring some form of pleasure. It increases risk of disease, it wastes energy, it can seriously increase the likelihood of something bigger coming along and eating you, and it often leaves you with responsibility.

I don't think it's all about reproduction, as some animals get busy even when the female is not fertile. I think for some, it can be an intimate way to cement a bonding. However, with others, they don't even bother to call the next day.
To use a worn-out phrase .... it's complicated.

The desire to mate?

Men are drawn to curves (breasts, hips,)...women are drawn to straight lines (chiseled jawline, square shoulders)
