Combating muscle soreness from workouts

I get debilitating muscle soreness regularly. I really dislike layover days, and I feel I should be able to do more.

Yesterday I did a 3 mile walk with my dog. My legs are sore, but my back and shoulders are killing me. I wore a small pack with a water bottle and as it warmed up a shirt I took off. Last week after a shorter 1 mile dog walk, I head out on my bike for what felt like a glorious ride. It was a bit windy and I cut it short, doing 1 mile or so. Again my back suffered. My legs were pretty sore afterwards. I spent 48 hours sore and had a layover day.

These incredibly short workouts combined with the soreness are driving me nuts. Is there anyway to get more consistent results, relieve muscle soreness?

OP, it would take a LOT more info about you and your present fitness to ever be able to make a fitness plan w accuracy or relevancy to you.

The basics are consistent exercise, hydration (add electrolytes?), proper diet, and your favorite, recovery. Perhaps some static stretching post activity, and foam rolling will calm those muscles after your workout.

You may be overdoing it. Try to do half what you're doing for a while and see if it helps.

Rob63,
I'm 83 and have trouble standing up from a chair. My legs get weak, so I exercise them slightly by doing very short deep knee bends. Maybe 6" down, ten times. That night and next day my knees hurt so bad.
I've never been this old before it might be normal.

@Rob63 , if you're still here.... My experience is similar to yours. Rest when you need it, but as you work those affected muscles more, they will strengthen and you'll not be sore(or as sore) next time. Also, you may notice better ways of using those same muscles for the movements your doing. For example, I used to strain some muscle/tissue in my arthritic hip, doing some Yoga forms. After using other muscles in my body to support the execution of the Yoga move, I have much less issue with the hip now.

I do calf stretches and a little backwards walking. I let kick in for a few days because it will hurt at first. After that I am fine. No more pain.

I agree that you might be over doing it.
Since you are having such problems with exercising you should be stretching before and after exercising.

Another thing to do is take soothing hot baths with Epsom Salts . They have a lot of magnesium in them with get absorbed into the muscles via the skin.

Then use a tens unit if your muscles are still sore. A tens unit can help your tendons and muscles while you’re resting.
