Can you believe anything any more?

I know, but there have to be some people there who are being genuine. I mean I'm there. I can't be the only one. ;)

Another real human on Reddit occasionally for special interest topics but avoid like the plague news and politics subs that are bot infested.

@AnnieA …I seldom participated in the covid threads. Between the polarization and the general incomplete information being bantered about it was and is impossible to exchange information in a helpful manner. Ivermectin was case in point. Because it is used in countries that have many types of parasites such as countries that lost so many adults to HIV it appeared to have a protective effect from covid. Without adequate studies it would never be determined if it was the medication…or the relative youth of those persons that might have made the difference.

So you found the answer you wanted and accepted that as truth? You believed "one guy" over "lots of people" because he sounded like he knew what he was talking about more than all the other expert advice you found.

That's kind of the trap people fall into when doing internet searches, not quite open minded as they should be, also going to sites that already lean toward their views. My thinking would be of course an Air Force base in Alaska would keep everything plugged in to be work ready, and if it causes premature ware so what, buy more, it's in the budget. lol

Anyway.. no I don't believe everything I read, even from the experts, because I believe much of the advise is self serving or simple opinion.

PS... As a self appointed expert(wink, wink) because I've had/have diesel equipment for many years the only time I use a block heater is if the equipment is sitting outside all night in the cold and I need to use it the next morning. So truck parked in the outside elements overnight, use the block heater. Truck parked in the garage for a week at a time unused, I probably wouldn't leave the heater on, but in truth I don't believe running it it would hurt anything, it's not like it gets very hot. Also shouldn't be a ridiculously expensive or hard item to replace when it does ware out. I say shouldn't be, but we've all been surprised by the cost of items at times.
No! It wasn’t a matter of how many people jumped on the bandwagon and acted like they had good advice it was simply that the one person who gave logical advice had the experience to back up what he said.

A new astounding Scientific study pops out on the internet about every 15 minutes.
Ladies it's all B.S. I saw a Cyber truck on the highway today. !st one in 3 months.
Brand new. Ugly swollen big toe is the reaction. Lightening's are also rare.
Basic rule of thumb is stuff is really screwed up right now. Risks are abounded!
Plan 1000-mile road trip. Check all the Detours, repairs, road closures especially
after 7 pm, bridges out, lanes blocked off, exits blocked. Best route 200 miles out of
your normal route! Get ready for a lot of stops and starts on the I-State with 18
wheelers too.

just popped up:

Have you ever searched to find old news about things that happened many years ago and seen that it is getting harder to find.
No matter how important something was in 1973 you will be lucky to find any information about it today.
I thought for a long time that once it was on the the internet that it would be on there forever.
Not so!
1973 / 1975 ..... Recession. Thas all folks. ..... :coffee: ..... Sure it was a dark time in US history.
Remember your boss had an excuse not to give you a raise.

Very difficult to believe anything that is posted on the internet these days. If anyone posts anything that I'm interested in I always Google it to see if there are reliable sources that provide credible information. I'm in this forum, a political forum and a car forum and I always research any claims someone posts.
Yes, trust but verify, or better still, trust after verification.

I think that truth evolves. That is why scientists sometimes study things for years…and their findings sometimes change. I feel that no matter what truth you are looking for it behooves you to be thoughtful.
If you are reading the results of a study you need to look at how the study choose their subjects. Then think logically what factors or traits were or were not used to determine outcomes. Then decide if you are willing to take the results as conclusive.
It's not for me to pass judgment on a study. I tend to go with the consensus opinion of well informed experts. I also remember that what is consensus opinion today may change tomorrow if new evidence comes to light.

As I understand it, before 1920 a man in Britain could walk into a store and legally buy a handgun (or other firearm) with very few restrictions.
That would be true of Australia too. After WW I many men still had their army rifles. Shooting rabbits and water fowl was a way of providing meat for the family table.

Rifle ranges were commonplace, and young men were encouraged to become marksmen to be ready for military combat should another war break out which it did in 1939.

The population* of Australia was 5.47 million in 1920. Today it is a little over 27.4 million.

Times, and the need for firearms, are very different today.

*Indigenous Australians were not included in the census.

Well, that just goes to show you there was a time when widespread firearm ownership was normal, even encouraged. As you pointed out, after WWI, many men kept their rifles, hunted to feed their families, and practiced marksmanship for national readiness. Society didn’t collapse under the weight of all those guns.

You said, "Times, and the need for firearms, are very different today." That’s true, but perhaps not in the way you think. Back then, communities were more self-reliant, violence was met with accountability, and citizens were trusted to be responsible. Today, with rising crime, and increasing social instability, one could easily argue the need for self-defense is greater than ever before, not less.

Is that the situation in Thailand? Do you need a firearm for your own safety?

I learned decades ago: "Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear". There are certainly people out here who proclaim to be experts but don't really know WTH they are talking about. It's our job to do our due diligence and find the truth.
Before the internet taught all of us the lesson... "People say believe half of what you see, son and none of what you hear." Good advice I first got from Marvin Gaye.
