Taking a break from drinking

I stopped drinking about three years back, mostly because alcohol was starting to cause more trouble for me than it was worth. I used to think having wine with friends was no big deal, but when I stepped away, it really highlighted how much my social life revolved around drinking. At first it felt weird, but over time I didn’t really miss it and actually prefer the clarity and energy I have now. My weight didn’t drop off like I expected, but I started sleeping better and didn’t get those late-night snack cravings anymore. If anyone’s looking for a more structured way to tackle an alcohol break or long term change, there are Abbeycare treatment clinics in the UK I’ve heard people mention for support and rehab options.

Good for you @Nathan! Ron and I used to have a nightly cocktail, then I quit altogether after Devin died. I don’t even know why, I just couldn’t drink.

After our move to a new house a year ago, I started to occasionally have a cocktail, and that’s still holding. I’ve lost several pounds in spite of the alcohol. Maybe my metabolism is different?

Yes, the addiction creeps up on alcoholics, so they don't realize what they are doing until they are so far into it that quitting becomes a major project, and many fail. Even normal drinkers can remain unaware of the effects alcohol can have on them. For me drinking is no longer an option, and I don't miss it one bit. I thought I would, but there was nothing in alcohol that contributed anything vital to my life.

I no longer hear the term that was once had derogatory overtones for me. "Tea Teetotaler" does not seem fashionable anymore. An alcohol free lifestyle is not a lifestyle I would look down, although I'm not a big fan of tea.

I get it. There were years I never missed even one day drinking. I finally got sick and tired of being sick and tired, and stopped it all at once. If I were to have even one drink today, I would be right back where I used to be.

I used to belong to a private club in Dallas where lawyers, cops and newspaper people hung out after work. I would stop in around 6 p.m. and the place was packed. I learned very early to never discuss a case with anyone in the news business. They ask a question about a case I may have been working on and they say, “don’t worry, this is off the record.” They lied then and they are still lying today. Journalism has gone out the door. I think they must take up Lying 101 in college.

Journalists and established media organisations are held in mistrust and contempt. Reason is decades of institutional arrogance, minimal adherence to ethical standards and a loose relationship to the truth. You were right to be wary of them, journalists have no credibility at all.

There will never be another man like Walter Cronkite, Chet Huntley or David Brinkley, just to name a few. I also thought Harry Reasoner was a decent guy, even though he got himself in a jam one time. When those men told you “It’s off the record,” it definitely was.
