Apparently the killer was on or did a lot of drugs including an SSRI called sertraline and admitting to smoking a 'decent' amount of pot. Too much pot can lead to a pot induced psychosis. These in addition to other medications.
The killer was a psychiatric and pharmaceutical mess and helps explain these murders and prior mental health episodes. But the killer still made a choice to seek out his victims, it wasn't a moment of rage.
