This week 2 ppl got scammed out of money here in town. One was a 64 yo woman who got scammed into thinking she won a sweepstake. She was told on a facetime call where she couldn't see the person that she needed to pull money from her acct so people wouldn't come after her.
Then she went to various places all over town and purchased multiple green dot money pak cards and provided the caller with the numbers. After sending them $13K they asked her to purchase
4 iphones. It wasn't until then she decided it was a scam and called the police.
Then an 18 yo on facebook marketplace had a bad actor that scammed her out of over $400. She made contact with an individual who was interested in what she was selling and she provided them with her Venmo information. Then the suspect told her there was a hold on her account.
Then she subsequently received a text message from "Venmo Support" and they told her to send $250 via Chime. However she sent $210 via CashApp and was told she would be reimbursed through Bitcoin. She then asked them to send the money back and they did not comply. Then she called the police and was somehow out a total of $460. Just a reminder to be safe and not give out any info or money over the phone.
Unless you're paying a bill over the phone and know you're speaking to the institution you intended of course. These scammers are relentless.
