Mama used to make me homemade hush puppies every time she fried me some fish that I'd caught but she just up and quit fixing them for some reason a few years back....I guess I need to sit that gal down and have a serious talk with her. :)

I thought there was something strange about this when I made it :sneaky:

Thank you this is what I imagine And it looks awful. I dunk biscuits in my tea and I pour gravy over roast beef. I find this a very interesting thread in the fact that each country has names for foods that are alien to others. What I mean is toad in the hole, if you are not English you might not know what this dish is. Hush puppies, to me they are a pair of shoes, as a food dish I have no idea what it is.

Southern Definition of a Hushpuppy
In the Southern United States, a hushpuppy is a small, savory, deep-fried round ball made from a thick cornmeal batter — often mixed with wheat flour, eggs, salt, baking soda, milk or buttermilk, and sometimes onion, garlic, peppers, or whole kernel corn Wikipedia+1. The batter is dropped spoonfuls at a time into hot oil and fried until golden-brown and crisp on the outside, with a soft, moist interior .

Cultural and Culinary Role
Hushpuppies are a classic Southern side dish, especially at fish fries, seafood shacks, barbecue joints, and fried chicken restaurants Wikipedia+1. They are often served alongside fried seafood, smoked meats, or barbecue, and can be eaten plain, with remoulade, honey butter, or other sauces Southern Living. In some Southern traditions, they are even served free at roadside stands or as a snack at events.

Southern Identity and History
The dish is strongly associated with the Southern U.S., with roots in Native American cornmeal cooking and later influenced by African culinary traditions brought by enslaved people Wikipedia+1. The name “hushpuppy” has several Southern origin theories:

Confederate soldiers tossing them to dogs to keep them quiet

Fishermen feeding them to dogs to hush them

Gullah Island cooks calling them “red horse bread” before the name changed

Slang meaning “to hush” — the “puppy” could refer to a dog or, more broadly, to quieting hunger

Southern Characteristics
Texture: Crispy, sandy crust; soft, cake-like center

Flavor: Savory, slightly sweet, with optional spices or herbs

Serving style: Bite-sized, often in a basket or on a plate, served hot but still edible when warm

Reheating: Can be reheated (though the crunch diminishes)

In short, to a Southerner, a hushpuppy is a crispy, cornmeal-based fried fritter — a humble yet beloved staple of Southern food culture, deeply tied to the region’s history, seafood traditions, and storytelling.
