It's probably time to say my goodbyes.

I joined this forum despite the fact that it's USA based and dominated.
I have inherited some intergenerational bias against the USA from my parents who were WW2 veterans. I'm also finding it hard to conceal my contempt for USA as a nation.
I expect to get banned at some stage, but I'll share a comment from my mother who served in the army of occupation in Japan from 1945 - 1947. The Americans are individually charming but not so collectively.

That's no surprise to anyone, of course, but it's cool you're open about it.

Some Americans share your contempt, but most do not, and I think the majority of those who do not are over 50. So, yeah, it's probably a good idea to save yourself the frustration that could cause.

Haven't been here long enough to know the dynamics between anyone or on any threads, but I will say this much, the US is just as much a citizenship that is fed propaganda as anywhere.

I like to compare things between nations but I sure don't think we have everything right, or are always told the truth either.

@Rakaia, very few negatives could be said about the current state of American politics that wouldn't be agreed with by most of the US population right now, including many on this forum. Surely you've noticed that.

When discussions become heated on SF and I find myself being drawn into dangerous waters that might cause me to be banned, I unwatch and skip controversial threads for awhile and focus on interpersonal threads.

I hope you'll stay. Should you leave, your comments will be missed.

If the forum is causing you grief, you need to do what you think is right for you.
I come here to share and for companionship with people around my own age.
If I do not like a thread I try not to participate or move on to something more pleasant or something I am interested in.
I tend to sense a lot of nice people here.
I do not go by someone's beliefs, I see people as how they treat each other.

I understand your feelings of contempt towards Americans.
Some of the citizens in a country do not always agree with their leaders.

I hope you decide to stay Rakaia.
:)

I eliminate politics. That’s something for others to worry and and argue about. I vote like any other Patriotic American. I vote by doing my homework and checking backgrounds and who is best suited for the job. I have seldom voted a straight ticket. I wish that our two main party’s would give up having platforms. We send politicians to Washington and the state government to vote the will of the people and NOT the Party. It doesn’t happen much. We should have term limits.

I tend to stay out of politics myself. I don't think overall one country is better than another and I'd agree that a govt isn't always representative of its people. Or certainly not ALL its people in most cases.

All differ. Countries differ. I don't know how much any of us can change at this point even if all came together and tried. I also think in most cases they try to keep us divided for reasons I won't go into as there really isn't any point.

I prefer to connect, discuss differences, I don't mean argue them, I mean discuss.

I think for each and every person there are better places in the world, and worse places in the world. Than where we are. Any of us. And it also depends on what one values.

No one is the same. None of us. I don't even care if you have a soulmate or feel one does, no one knows the inner thoughts of any person. Not ever. They might be able to predict what they will do or say in many a circumstance but each of us is the only person on earth that knows us.

Unfortunately our electoral system is causing politicians with far right or far left positions to get elected to Congress. I think most of us are moderate, pragmatic, middle of the road on most issues, but the primary system eliminates candidates who feel that way. Witness the current attempts by both sides at gerrymandering which will force swing states (purple) to become either red or blue.

Take a deep breath and relax. I have been spanked here a time or two or maybe even three so as other members in good stnding here are giving you good advice. No problem reading controversial and more so political threads which are automaticaly closed and the offender(s) are shown the door. Sometimes tempoarily or shown the door on a permanent bases. Relax and take a deep breath, ponder the wonders of the world come back and read then jump in with a positive outlook and you will be just fine. Get ready for the massive deluge of welcome back, we missed you.

Advice from a friend.

I think most are moderate as well but how long that will continue through the generations, not sure.

I'm not a fan of either side. They are all the same for the most part or force someone to be if they are not if a moderate or someone meaning well is elected.

Imo they divide and conquer.

We can quit caring and just take care of our own things or try to sway or convince others but THEN that's not going to happen either is it...

People can't even discuss such civilly anymore. Or many can't anyhow... Most maybe even...

You have to do what's best for you.... of course..and I understand your sentiment...

I've been here 12 years.. and still I'm taken aback by the ttitdes of some...altho' I've learned to reign in my responses most of the time

What irritates me is that regardless of what I say , if it sounds like it's even the slightest negativity towards the US there will always be someone..or more than one SHOUTING.. that I'm Anti-American...

We British.. Australians, Canadians.. we can all take slight critisims of our countries/leaders.. people...... without losing our chit... Americans seem unable to do that unless it's one merican to another..... ... and much as I like the majority of them as people..that's a huge flaw IMO

There is always humor, kind of sneak in the contempt that way to get it out of your system?

United States: The Main Character.
Obsessed with "freedom" but can't find their own state on a map; they’ll tell you a mediocre burger is "gas."

United Kingdom: The Repressed Academic.

Thinks unseasoned food and queuing for fun are personality traits; they’ll call you a "muppet" while smiling to your face.

Canada: The Passive-Aggressive Neighbor.
Thinks being "not American" is a substitute for a culture; they’ll call you a "hoser" after apologizing for your mistake.

Nigeria: The High-Energy Hustler.
Will try to sell you a startup idea before you’ve even said hello; they’ll dismiss your nonsense with a sharp "mtchew" (teeth sucking).

Australia: The Professional Beach Bum.
Spent so much time in the sun they’ve forgotten how to pronounce the second half of any word; they’re definitely a "bogan" if they wear "thongs" to a wedding.

Ireland: The Professional Mourner.
Can turn a funeral into a party and a party into a debate about 400-year-old grudges; they’ll say everything is "grand" even while the house is burning down.

South Africa: The Chaotic Survivalist.
Lives in a place where the power goes out daily but still thinks they’re winning at life; they’ll promise to help "just now," which is a blatant lie.

New Zealand: The Forgotten Cousin.
Their entire national identity is being "the place where they filmed Lord of the Rings"; they’re probably "stoked" just to be included on a map for once.

Singapore: The Rules Lawyer.
Will literally fine you for breathing incorrectly but will risk their life for a bowl of noodles; they’ll add "lah" to the end of a sentence to make a command sound like a suggestion.

Jamaica: The Aggressively Chill.
So laid back they’re practically horizontal, yet somehow produce the fastest people on earth; they’ll call you "bredren" while laughing at your lack of rhythm.
