Yes they do work very well.
When I was a young child my family stayed with my Grampa, he had a water pump.
I remember (pump,pump,pump.) (squeak,squeak,squeak)
Some of my family out of state still have them. Most of course have both pumps and modern tap running water.

I forgot the squeek part.
It was helpful to fill large watering cans to water vegetable plants, and also was useful to wash off hands and gardening tools.

Would it freeze up in the winter?
And did you also have a sistern tank, to gather water or other receptacles for rain water? Not to drink.
(Oops, that is spelled cistern?)

We have & still use the hand pump we put on our well head back in the late 90s. With the animals, we needed to make sure we have water should the power go out for any length of time. It came in handy when we used it during Hurricane Ike & we lost power for 5 days.

That is what I used for about 20 years at my house before I moved here in 2018. Worked very well as our only water source. It was red too like that picture.
