Ageism in Our Society - The New York Times

During the few times I go out in public I am actually treated better.

Probably because of the cane I use. They see the gimp wobbling up the walkway and they move over, hold doors for me, smile, etc. They never did that before.

Of course, if they knew it was a specially-constructed fighting cane they might react differently ...

Hmm. I think I am treated well for the most part by young and middle aged Canucks. Some of the older people find my clothing and irreverent attitude problematic. Lol. I have always been flamboyant and eccentric to a degree. Grateful for Canadian tolerance. Lolol. It helps that I have never been overly concerned what other people think of me.

Very alive and well... but I have discovered how to use it to my advantage.. and by the time they figure it out... I'll be retired.. lol!!

Lol. I remember overhearing some co-workers refer to me as an older woman, lolol. I was 55 at the time, lol. They ranged from mid 20s to mid 30s. Lol. Lol. Lol.

i do think attitudes towards older people are changing as people live longer. I remember when I thought 30 was old...lol..and when I turned 30 I though..yeah okay..still just me. I'm 65 now and it's still "just me". Hey, AARP came calling when I was 50. I remember thinking am I really old? I thought...naw..maybe in 25 years....and if I get there... I'll reevaluate. So, why don't I want to be "old"...I guess because being "old" in our society has never seemed like any kind of honor...

Karen, our bodies age as they will, but I think having an old mindset is a choice. Unless psychosis sets in, I think I will always have an ageless (according to my kids and students) mind. I think laughter, play, and compassion for others help keep us young.

I have decided that 2016 will be my last year working... I'll be almost 68.. I am lucky enough to be in a very high demand specialty in Healthcare... I know it inside and out.... and it's very difficult to find someone with my experience. I have got to admit I play the age card on occasion to my advantage... and it works... Then when I think they have written me off as "old".... I blow them away with my expertise... I pull that in and out of my tool box as the need demands.. I know I am in a lucky situation and not all Seniors can take advantage.. but I can.. and gladly do so...

Not the least of which is being able to blatantly flirt with the handsome young men... no one takes you seriously.... HA! If they only knew..

Especially with those young Latinos Whhhhoooo Babeeeee! Me gusta que el trasero!

Old?! Whatever. I just got back from the gym where I used dumbbells that weighed up to 22 lbs in each hand. I wear a bikini to the pool or beach. And I'm retired. Call me old if you want. Don't care.
