Rereading one's own posts

Recently, at the invitation of an old friend, I joined a new forum.
It was nothing like Senior Forums in that it prides itself in having no rules and nothing is too offensive to post.

I should have known better but I stuck around for three weeks because I was promised intelligent conversation.
There was precious little of that on offer.

Mostly is it was a lot of smartarse putdowns of anything/anyone that the three or four posters disagreed with plus a lot of vile sexual imagery.
Yet these men (apart from my friend they were all men) pride themselves on their superior intellect!!

If it is clever to sound like out of control 14 year old boys then obviously I don't have a clue abut what a mature, intelligent conversation should sound like.

I have left the forum because I was feeling dirty simply by being associated with the content. I did it discreetly without any flouncing or gratuitous character assessments, but I wonder whether the members there ever go back and read their own posts. If they did, would they still post that way or would they be a bit ashamed to own them?

Now I'm wondering whether I should look back over my own posts on this forum to see whether I have been true to my own values. I know that I have lapsed a couple of times and I have apologised on those occasions. If I have offended people more recently due to my insensitivity, I sincerely apologise now and I do intend to look back over my posts as a penance.

I would like to thank our moderators, especially SeaBreeze, for treading the fine line between latitude and necessary control. You are doing a fine job and I definitely do not want to leave this forum. It serves its members extemely well and really is a friendly and interesting place to talk with many lovely and interesting people.

:thanks:

Warri, I agree with your tribute to SB.

Say, do you think I might just, er.... fit-in, or benefit from, that salacious forum you describe? Could be I might learn some new cuss-like words!

It would be a lowering of your standards imp.

I mean there is salacious and then there is cess pit.
The sad part is that they believe that they are being intellectual.

Sometimes you just stumble into the wrong forum. One...the only time I was ever banned from a site...was dog themed. And as long as you believed in Jesus, pickup trucks and owning a full arsenal you were welcome. The other was supposed to be a writers site. Now for the most part you would think writers to be fairly imaginative and free thinking ( okay then there's writers like Ayn Rand), but generally speaking. When the equal marriage law was passed one character wrote something so hateful I'm surprised he wasn't banned. But a moderator got right in there and backed him up. I dropped off right there.

Yea, some forums are just too "Wild West" and definitely not the place for any meaningful conversation. Some small minds enjoy being kings of their very small corner of the 'net.

No time for for the likes of such...

DW sounds like it was a bit of a wild west site ,would be a bit of a nightmare being involved in that sort of forum Compaired to this very well moderated forum.
I personally have learned quite allot of information Reading your very interesting posts.

I agree this is a well moderated forum. Seabreeze and Matrix put in a lot of time here. I also think the members here have a lot to do with what a great place it is to spend time in.

Warrigal, I'm sure every single one of us here has had the experience of going back to change something we've written and wanted to delete or change but found out the "edit post" button had already been removed. :) Well, maybe not everyone, but I sure have. :) We just do the best we can and that's it.

I agree that Sea and Matrix do an excellent job of weeding out the nutcases here.

Of course, I expect my monthly "tributes" to them account for part of it, as well as my own relative freedom here ...

Warri, regarding your own posts, you have nothing to worry about. We have had a few differing view points. I was always able to see your side of it, and you never dismissed or disparaged mine. I enjoy your posts very much. Where you really stand out is being well informed about whatever you're talking about. I know I have learned a few things from you. Don't ask me now what they were. I'm just an old guy with all that goes with that. :D

Thanks Underock.

I do try to always remember that behind every username and avatar is a real person with real feelings but I never shrink from stating point of view worrying that some or many people will disagree with me.

It is only when we hear the dissenting voices that we are able to rethink our own thoughts and opinions and grow. I have learned much by engaging in in discussion/debate with people from different parts of the world and who have had very different life experiences to me.

Even when I disagree, I try to respect the other side of the argument. I could have no respect for the posters on the forum I just left. At least, I'm trying to leave but my name still appears on the members' list. I'll keep haranguing the admin until they take it down. I really don't want anyone to think that I'm part of that rubbish.

Warri, no need to review any of your posts at all. I've always appreciated everything you've had to say over the years, you're a knowledgeable and well-respected lady and it's always a pleasure to read your posts. As Linda said, it's all of the members here who make this such a nice place, that's why I've stuck around so long. Also want to thank you and the others for your kind words, much appreciated. :)

I have visited some forums which were filled with antagonism among many posters. Should have been labeled "Let your anger and frustrations out on other members here". And I don't think these people have a clue about how rude and obnoxious they are. I prefer a more peaceful environment.
