Who has decided not to own a car any longer?

I want to sell my truck, and be rid of all the bills for fixing this or that. I can't afford a new one, and I don't want to buy yet another used (someone elses problems).

I'd like to hear from folks that are living without wheels, and how they get around now? I could be saving a lot of money I know, plus, we have lots of transportation, like trains, buses, and planes (which a flight is a lot cheaper than paying 400 bucks to have a freezer plug replaced) Not to mention license and registration renewals.

I'm just not seeing how it's worth it. Even renting a UHaul should I move again is cheaper than the truck is starting to cost me. It was the best of trucks, but bought it new in 94. So you can imagine.

I think you're on to something Denise. I'm looking forward to being in that kind of situation one day although my husband is unlikely to ever go for that. At least when we move from here, we won't have tractor expenses to deal with (don't need tractors in apartments you know :)).

I'm at a stage in my life where I want to simplify, simplify, simplify!

That's mostly the reasons, simplify. If the truck was newer, much newer, and I wasn't constantly getting the check engine light, after just have work done already;) I could be using that money to take a trip. Even rent a car when I get there. I'd have to save up, but I could if I got rid of things that eat up my dough, that I do not need!

I gave up driving, and thus owning vehicles, many years ago. The cost, the frustration of driving, it was like raising another kid. I'm within walking distance of milk and bread, so what more do I need? I no longer hang out in malls, I don't go to the zoo, I don't hang out in my jammies at WalMart. I don't even talk into clowns' mouths any more!

I'm a monk - monks don't need to drive.

How do you fetch groceries, go to the sawbones or get to where buses don't go?
We bought a 3 year old car with 13,000 miles on it. It does the fetching and carrying, trips to the Rec center and on a pleasant evenings we enjoy a drive to the beach with the top down.

Both of us have problems walking very far.

Groceries are delivered by the store for a small fee. Get one big order, once a month.

Buses to the doctors.

You simply don't GO where the buses don't go.

There are trade-offs for everything.

It wouldn't be manageable here, as our public transportation is less than abysmal. When I lived back east, I didn't have a car for quite a while, and really didn't miss it, especially since parking was such a hassle. Here, it just wouldn't work very well at all.

Driving may have to go as aging takes it toll, but one can hire a driver to take one for the trips to the grocery store and the liquor store, which won't be to often as I buy in bulk...

I feel badly for you, Denise. I bought my 2005 Malibu in 2007. I'm very fortunate that it's never given me any problems. Only ever had to buy new tires, and only once. But before the Malibu, I went through a string of lemons for several years. Every time I counted out my money to a mechanic, in my head I was counting; "One dress, two pairs of shoes, a new washing machine..."

Much as I like my car, I'd love to own a scooter. One with a little boot/trunk on it, and maybe some cute saddle-bags, for when I go shopping. But I live up in the hills, and most of my family is 45 minutes to over an hour away. They visit me more than I do them, but I would hate not being able to visit them. Most of my doctors are quite a distance as well.

Could take a bus, though.
