Shots were fired at the the Quebec Islamic Cultural Centre on Sunday night, police said. The centre's Facebook page posted video of police outside the scene, with a written comment that there are "some dead".
Police said two people had been arrested, but did not provide a number for those killed or injured.

Such a sad world we live in isn't it? These are the sorts of things that make me sad for my grandkids. The world seems to be getting worse and more violent as time goes by.

Suspect is Alexandre Bissonette, Caucasian Québécois Uiversity of Laval student. Known by extremists for his anti multicultural, anti feminist, nationalistic, pro Marine LePen views. Sad as this is, as a student of history, I do not believe the world is going to hell in a hand basket. There are many more heinous time periods from which to choose. However, today 36 million Canadians mourn, today, we are all Muslims.

Debby. I have live through World War II the Korean War and there's no comparison now.

In what ways would you say it's different Camper? Do you think that while war was going on 'over there', here at home people were more supportive of one another, more patient, more kindly? I'd be interested to hear a little more of what you're remembering if you have a minute.

World War II was horrible. Millions died. It took an atomic bomb to end it.

I know that a shooting like the one we are discussing is horrible. But really there is no comparison to what took place in World War II.

I do think that overall the world is a better place now compared to World Wars. When people say 'over there' well it was our soldiers that went over there.

Young people who hardly started life are laying in neat rows over there.

I agree Camper6.

I hear you on what you say was horrible before.

It is just that all of these killings are now right in our face and sometimes it's hard to escape the news every day of what is going on. There are millions dying now, too, altogether through all of this middle eastern crisis or war or whatever you want to call it. Sensitive people feel the effects of the everyday news and after math.

I agree with you Camper there's really no comparison to the horror

Oh I agree that living with a war going on all around you is more horrible, but I guess my question was more about what kind of social environment was prevalent then and how people felt about life in general. Was it better then (before the wars started) with people feeling somewhat optimistic about their prospects. Because from what I read, these days young people are not all that hopeful which of course would cause their families to worry about what their sons and daughters are going to do and accomplish in life.

This is very sad. He IS a Terrorist by each and every definition. Hopefully we can block people like him from entering this country too.

I agree with you Shali... Last weekend has restored my faith in the basic goodness of people.. Both Americans and Canadians.. We will get through this together.

Indeed we will QuickSilver. Canada is holding vigils across the country for the victims and their families. This only serves to make us stronger and more united, Canadians and Americans.

Something good has come out of after all, making the ties between Canadians and Americans stronger.:love_heart:

Only one of the two arrested now considered a suspect. A gun was found in an SUV about 5K away. Witnesses did say at least two shooters with masks and one with a Quebec accent. At least one witnesses is saying 'Allu Akbar' was yelled.

Here is the source of the false impression that there were two shooters and one of them was a Muslim. Fox News was very slow to correct a false report. It was not until the Canadian PM complained that they fully corrected the record. Meanwhile many readers were led to believe the Allu Ackbar claim.

In the first chaotic hours after the Quebec City mosque massacre, police detained two men: one French Canadian and one born in Morocco. Plenty of outlets reported both arrests. But no one did it quite like Fox News.

The Canadian, Alexandre Bissonnette, was mentioned nowhere in Fox's tweet Monday, which announced: "Suspect in Quebec mosque terrorist attack was of Moroccan origin."

Mohamed Belkhadir was quickly released and cleared of involvement, but Fox's tweet stayed up for nearly two days - until the Canadian prime minister's office wrote the outlet to demand a retraction.

...

Anyone who clicked the link on Fox's tweet would have read a story in which Belkhadir's ethnicity led the news.

"One of two gunmen who shouted 'Allahu akbar!' as they opened fire at a mosque in Quebec City was of Moroccan origin," Fox wrote, quoting a witness and local reports, according to a Google cache of the original story.

Along with the erroneous tweet, those details spread online, into anti-Islamic circles, and helped create a false narrative that the attacker was Muslim.

"As I predicted last night, the shooters in the Quebec mosque attack are Muslim, as is generally the case in these circumstances," blogger Pamela Geller wrote, linking to the Fox Story.
